I'm convinced it'll be after I'm dead, and I'm only in my 30s. But I'll keep drinking the koolaid anyway.

I actually found a curious trend in Aggie football. About once every 15-20 years, the team puts up a really great year and either gets close to competing for a title or has a team capable of doing it, then falls apart or is shut out for one reason or another.

1919 - Special; unfathomable that no voters gave A&M the title. 1917 was equally dominant. The SWC did not have the national cachet it would gain in the fifties at the time.
1939 - An MNC, but a national title nonetheless. (+20)
1957 - Rumors of Bear's leaving derailed the season. (+18)
1975 - Right on the cusp until a deflating loss to Arkansas. (+18)
1994 - Special if only for the reason that they went undefeated, if in a weak year for the SWC. If they didn't have bowl sanctions, who knows how the voters might have voted. (+19)
2012 - We know the story by now; one made field goal from making the title game. (+18)

So the Aggies definitely make a habit of getting real close, then stubbing their toe for one reason or another. It's a school that can get there and is a strong competitor on a regular cycle, but has been star-crossed ever since Alabama stirred the pot. Unfortunately, the last "great" season has come and gone, so we now return to the prior cycle of "build-rebuild-stumble". Fatalistic yes, but I believe in statistical trends.

What's likely to happen: Sumlin stumbles and fumbles his way to a firing; next guy comes in, looks promising, ultimately fails. Since it usually takes two or three coaches between "great" or "figurehead" coaches to find the right guy, it should take two or three more coaches after Sumlin to find the "right" guy, who by then can fix the program in time to make it competitive again on its normal cycle for that one great year when people think the sleeping giant has awakened, only to see it fall back off again regardless of whether they actually make any playoff.

It is what it is. At least there's baseball and women's sports.

Based on what I've witnessed in the past 10 years I think we'll have a chance to win it all once tackle football is replaced with touch football due to saftey reasons. So I'd say in the next 10 to 15 years.

Judging from the contracts we gave Sherman, Sumlin, and Kennedy, we're kind of like a game show for coaches. If we draw their number, they get a huge, undeserved contract.

Did a brief search to try and find stats for how many years a coach was at their school before winning the whole thing and didn't find anything immediately. Might try to search more later.
