1. Cal is a P5 program with proximity to decent athletes, HI is a small program on a small island. The few really awesome Pacific Islander athletes end up going to power 5 programs, so HI eats everyone else's scraps.

2. HI suspended 2 key defensive players
http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/17399647/hawaii-rainbow-warriors-discipline-3-players-ahead-california-golden-bears-game-sydney

3. Spav especially sucked at making adjustments. Because of reasons 1 and 2, HI was not able to force Spav to adjust.

Its conceivable that Spav had a gestalt moment sometime after being fired. I would not bet on it. He might figure things out in the next 5-10 years.

I personally would attend a Que if the invite said "maybe it wasn't Spav", if only to eat some good que.

If you look at the final score and think Spav did well then you didn't watch the game. If you watched the game and thought Spav looked good... you re an idiot...

Once the DC's have some tape for the season it is game over. No adjustments possible except in the off season.

Thank heavens they play the sips early, and that Strong and Bedford aren't that bright.

Let's not forget that Spav looked good at A&M several times too. We played Sam Houston State, Nevada, Ball State, Rice, etc.

The SEC chewed him up and spit him out.

The South Carolina game to open the 2014 season and launch the SECN made Spav look great and Sumlin as the "Quarterback Whisperer." Too bad no one knew South Carolina's defense was putrid.

OT, but that's partially the problem with the Big XII--defense is optional. Maybe because Texas high schools have tunnel vision on offense, maybe not, but the fact remains that defense wins championships with a good offense. Ball control.

Although, I will say watching TCU come back against Oregon in the bowl game was amazing. That was some great scheming and play-calling. Took the Oregon defense completely by surprise.

When I lived there in the early 80s, the locals were ecstatic that they almost beat Temple.

The best coach UH ever had was June Jones, and he left for greener pastures ... at SMU.

Agree!
We have had some below average coaches on our staff. They would have been fired from good Texas high school programs! At least we finally made some good hires lately!
If your head coach is not a seasoned offensive guru, your OC best be the guru. Once the cards were thrown on the table, neither could adjust to the SEC defenses.

The offensive players that have been around for a while have learned more football in the last 6 months than the previous 3-4 yrs!

I don't fault Spav for not being ready to be an OC in the SEC----somebody hired him...

AGinHI, quit making UH out to be some big deal. Beautiful campus but terrible program.

I didn't know all of those particulars but it's not surprising given the results.

Here's my biggest problem of all, Sumlin let it happen.

I think most HC's would have stepped in and told them this isn't going to work and lined them out.

I can appreciate a boss that let's his people do their jobs but when the results suck it's the boss's job to fix it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Sumlin fire two of those three after that happened? If you've managed people you'd know - sometimes you can change the dynamic or direction enough to get a performance change and sometimes you have to cut bait and reorganize. With the egos Sumlin was dealing with, the only option was the one he took - get through the year and make the change.

This. Can't emphasize enough what an impact this had. No offensive coordination of any kind, mixed with shoddy execution, mixed with mind-numbing predictability, and failure to make adjustments. I'm honestly surprised we were able to score what we did.

Yes, he fired them. One year too late in Spav's case. You could argue he should have just demoted Spav and brought in a real OC last yr. it was obvious Spav was not up to the job in 2014.

Spaz completely lost me during the Liberty Bowl. We had the game in hand, just had to run out the clock, and he starts calling passing plays! It's like he was trying to lose the game!
