I grew up a vol fan. It is very similar to Neyland in that you won't be attacked by fans. In fact, the experience is very similar with the sizes of the two stadiums. Kyle is a much larger stadium overall with bigger seats for each person. Also, tailgates are spread out all over campus, but that won't stop you from having a great time if you just walk past any of the tailgates and say howdy. Hell, you won't make it 100 yards without being fully loaded with food and drinks.

Midnight yell is similar to vol walk but longer/larger (usually.) Most of the fans go out and then migrate across campus to the stadium. It is a fun time and reminds me of the trips walking up cumberland and over to Neyland except it is dark. A&M is a massive campus though, but we don't have all the hills so it isn't too bad if it isn't 100 degrees.

Go Vols!

Making the roundtrip from Galveston to College Station for Midnight Yell, then back the next morning for gameday will be an absolute beat down.
Great advice, that drive could take a great experience and turn it into a cluster very quickly even for those who regularly drive in Houston traffic.

Midnight yell is great but a 6 hour round trip commute seems to be a little much. Especially when you are looking at another 6 hours on Saturday.

Should really look at staying somewhere closer, at least on Friday night.

Watch the Corp of Cadets March In across campus an hour before the game

Like I said earlier, I think Galveston is a fine place to visit.

But yes, a commute to and from Galveston for Midnight Yell and then turning around and going back to College Station again would not be a great plan.

Here's an updated pre-Midnight Yell festivities map. Go to Northgate. Get lit. Walk across campus with the students. You'll get a big kick out of it.

2nd the recommendation to stay in a town like fredericksburg, marble falls or new braunfels! Beautiful country, great food and great wine.

Another thought...you might want to checkout the A&M Calendar to keep apprised of events:

He's making a 17 hour drive to get here. He should see if he can find anything local for accomodations or maybe the Woodlands. He's already in for a beat down well without running back and forth to the hill country.

I'd save the Hill Country for another trip. Its the wrong side of College Station from Virginia and going to make for an even bigger beat-down of a drive. You're going to want a Hill Country/Austin trip to be one where you don't feel rushed and all of that.

Do what you want in the Houston/Galveston area...for all we know this guy has a good reason to go to Galveston...but do try to avoid all that driving back and forth on Friday/Saturday.

One suggestion don't eat at the Dixie Chicken or Lanes . Aggie favorites, but highly overated . Kope Bridge is great for a good burger. Also check out aggieland outfitters if you want some great aggie merchandise. Hope you love aggieland as much as I do!

Food recommendations!
  • BBQ: J. Cody's in Bryan off South College
  • Mexican: Taqueria El Sol #3 in Bryan off Texas past Weinerschnitzel
  • Steaks: Beefmasters off Hwy. 6 north of the movie theater
  • Asian Zing: Vietnamese Taste off College (if it hasn't moved)

Galveston sucks. If you don't want to stay in CS, I would stay at Lake Conroe at La Toretta or at the Woodlands.
You might check out Messina Hof winery near CS. They have rooms. Or even stay in Houston by the Galleria or see an Astros game.

Galveston is a dump. That being said I have lived in and around Houston my entire life so I have may have a distorted view.

Katy / West Houston IMO your best lodging unless you are really set on Galveston. lots of hotels that are usually cheap on weekends

Solid advice! Stay near College Station. I've only been twice (thanks a bunch Jerry Jones)! The Hill Country is not the Smokies or the Ozarks but it has it's own type of beauty. If your used to the "Red neck Riviera" you will be disappointed in Galveston.

Check out idrivearkansas.com there is a new bridge going in over Red River at Fulton which is a few miles east of Texarkana. I30 is two way traffic here for 10 miles an accident ahead of you here will leave you stuck for up to 7 hours. When you get to Hope Ar. Take the alternate route at Hope. This will put you on US 67 for 18 miles to Texarkana.

If you're interested in the rich legacy Tennessee folks have in the roots of Texas and aren't tied too much to Galveston, you should definitely consider staying in Huntsville, Sam Houston's adopted home town and burial place. Lots of Sam Houston history and only about an hour away from College Station.

I hope people have scared you off of the idea of staying in Galveston on Friday and Saturday nights.. especially if you plan on attending Midnight Yell and making the rounds of tailgates before the game. Since you're making a 17-hr. drive, I assume that you have several days to spend down here. Two nights and one day is plenty of time to see most of what Galveston has to offer. I would suggest Wednesday night and Thursday night in Galveston, then move closer to College Station for Friday and Saturday. Brenham is an option.

If you're dead set on staying in Galveston (and like most above, I definitely wouldn't recommend it, especially for two rounds trips) be sure to get a burger at the Spot and some seafood at Benno's while you're there. While in CS.......a burger stop at Koppe Bridge is an absolute must. Mostly just show up, don't be an a**hole and Aggies will treat you to a great gameday!

My wife and I live 20 minutes from Knoxville...so I've had the pleasure of experiencing Rocky Top on game day. I think you'll have a great time at Kyle Field!

Couple of things...Northgate is to A&M as The Strip is to UT. That said, Northgate is not even 25% the size of The Strip. Another thing...my next door neighbor is also making the trip...and he's going to catch a 6A high school football game in Dallas. Might want to consider staying closer to CS on Friday...catch half of a game in Houston (Katy?) then head to CS for Midnite Yell.

Regardless of what you opt to do, you'll have a great time, and I strongly suspect you'll be the recipient of lots of 'Howdy's'

For midnight yell and the game, I second, third and fourth the motion others have said about staying closer. Maybe a compromise like north Houston, the woodlands or Tomball area. If you plan on taking an extra day to experience Galveston, you can just drive down there and back for a day trip.

Its been said but staying in Galveston was a poor choice, you may want to stay there Saturday night but not Friday night.

Guess I am not sure of your plans but assuming you are in Galveston on Friday you will have to leave by 7 or 8 and then have some-what heavy weekend traffic up to College Station (About 3 hours) you get there at 10-11 find a parking spot and walk to Kyle for a 30 min midnight yell practice, and assuming that you don't venture over to Northgate or look around you will be headed back to Galveston and get in around 3 - 4 AM. Since the game time isn't announced that could be a tough turnaround for a 2 PM game, mind you I would give yourself 4 hours for travel to and from on Game-day so if the game is at 2PM you would have to leave Galveston by 8 AM.

Save your self the trouble and stay in Cypress (Northwest Houston or closer towns to College Station as mentioned) Galveston is by no means worth your time and wont be a highlight of your stay. Save that for Saturday night if you must.

Galveston is great if you are a fisherman, but you have to go pretty far south on the Island to get to the nicer beaches, and even that is relative. It's not that bad if you get to the southern beach accesses. The seafood and sightseeing on the island can be good.

The drive back and forth to college station will be tough if you are commuting back and forth for weekend events.

For parking get on parkme.com search Kyle Field, put in the date for the game and buy a central garage pass for $30
You will be screwed if you don't have parking.

If the Aggies are 2&2 or worse tickets will be cheap, 3-1 or better, good luck finding 4 together for a decent price.

Galveston is a mistake, not seeing how that's on the way. Get a hotel in Navasota, Tx or Caldwell, Tx.

Arrive in Austin (instead of Galveston) on Wednesday. Check into the "W" downtown...Do south Congress Wednesday, lay out at Pool on Thursday afternoon, have dinner early at Eddie V's on 5th,and then party like a rock star on West Sixth(stay off of East(dirty) Sixth. Drive over to College Station on Friday Early/ Go to George Bush Library, then head over to the Dixie Chicken for some evening Beers...Walk on over to Yell Practice around 11. Get up Saturday and Tailgate All day until Game time...I'm an Aggie, my wife is a Vol....

Thanks for all the replies, fellas.

We're kind of set on staying in Galveston, I've done prepaid for the hotel, and where we used our discount through work, it saved us a ton of money, but made it nonrefundable. I know going to midnight yell is going to be a rough trip, but this may be the only time in my life I make it to the great state of Texas, so I'm going to try to take in everything I can.

The thought of taking in a high school game actually sounds pretty cool, if possible. I went to a small single A school, so even though we had a very passionate fanbase, it was rather small. (We were more of a basketball school anyways, packed the gym for opening practice every year.)

Taking in a game at one of college football's cathedrals not named Neyland is on my bucket list, and even though the Swamp is very historic, I wouldn't call it nice.

Only 60 days to go, maybe I'll even run in to some of you at the game.

P.S. Very nice board setup, much better than any of the other visiting forums I've lurked on, the first I've actually registered for. Most of my forum browsing is on Volnation, but I'll come back from time to time even after the game and post some.
