Why are we getting so many 3 stars instead of 4 stars?

I'm sure I will get flamed for asking the question but maybe one person will provide a real answer. Thanks.

More 3 stars than 4 stars

In Texas, 20+ 4 stars have not committed.

It's early.

The three stars are rated one less star than the four stars and that's on a scale of five stars. At this time, the kids who have signed with A&M are rated three out of five stars which causes A&M to acquire many more three stars than four stars due to mathematicals. Which reminds me that the movie "The Fault in Our Stars" is rated 2.5/5 stars, but astronomically a half star could just be one part of a binary, which makes these three stars potentially six stars and then BOOM....you got a group of six star players for Sumlin next year.

/Madden, probably.

point being, and i've said this for years, that the hardest recruit to recruit is a 3 star recruit when they are on their way to becoming a four star recruit.

Almost every Recruit will be a 3 star recruit before they are a 4 star recruit.

When the recruit becomes a 3 star recruit on his way to 4 star recruit, he will almost ALWAYS have a huge propensity to commit to the Ags.

It's time we start using this a bit more.

5.7 is a 3 star, 5.8 is a 4 star. Not saying stars don't matter but two of the 3 stars we just took (Alton Robinson and Irvin Smith) have brand new Bama offers.

Josh Reynolds was a 2 star coming out of high school.

Of much more concern at this point is the need to step it up at DB recruiting.

I get that more kids are 3 stars than 4/5 stars but this year 8 of our 12 commits (67%) are 3 stars. Whereas last year 11 of our 25 kids (44%) were 3 stars and in 2014 we had 8 of our 22 commits (36%) were 3 stars. Source is 247 composite. We have brand new facilities, a head coach who knows offense and relates to recruits and a newly hired defensive coordinator who is one of the best in the country. Seems we should not be getting so many 3 stars.

I was curious about this too, until I looked at the offer list for some of our 3* commits. Really impressive offers. Also, many of our top commits are defensive recruits. I just want to see some more DBs and LBs.

I think it has to do with our proximity to the Gulf of Mexico

Good point and brings up a question. Does anyone know where Reynolds came from? Is there like an origin story or something?

Are you comparing the commits now to the commits at this time last year? Or to the class on Signing Day? What proportion of 4/5 star recruits have committed so far?

I'm totally onboard with the staffs recruiting philosophy/strategy but wouldn't mind seeing KDS/Chavis pull in some 4/5 star CB's in this class.

There are just not that many Four & Five Star Recruits and because of that they have lots of options and they know they can slow play their recruitments and wait for the best offer and/or the best opportunity for playing time etc. Three Star Recruits have a few less options and they know if a good program offers they better commit. Many high three star recruits are as good as four star recruits, they just need one or two more good runs/catches/tackles to earn them that fourth star.

You can't just look at stars, look at who else has offered them.

Offers matter more since coaches' evaluations utlimately impacts their job performance & employment.
If a recruiting website is wrong on stars, there are no repercussions (they can also change crystal ball predictions all day long).

Wait until some of TOS update their rankings. And then look at some 3-star guys that we have had... Do any of you care that Josh Reynolds was a 3-star? I doubt it.

Reynolds attended John Jay HS in San Antonio, went JUCO before joining the Ags.

The 2014 and 15 numbers are final signing day numbers. I don't have those number for June 14th of those respective years. My opinion is that data won't matter because my memory says we were talking a lot more 4 and 5 stars in those years then we are getting this year.

Someone said there are fewer 4 and 5 stars this year. I didn't see a drop off. Can someone provide the numbers that back up that claim?

To those saying stars don't matter, we are going to have to disagree when it comes to winning national titles. History has shown that stars do matter. Now maybe some of our recruits move up but these kids are between 500-750 so they have a ways to go to get into the top 250.

After careful evaluation, our coaching staff is getting EXACTLY who they want early on in the recruiting process. This should tell you everything you need to know. They don't give a **** about recruiting service opinions.

Are all of our 4/5* targets committing elsewhere? If not, and will fill out the class with those guys the numbers will probably look just like the last few years.

Maybe our staff is evaluating the players a little harder and looking less at the star rankings that come from people as knowledgeable as Ketch.

Yes I'm sure they wouldn't prefer to have 20 5* guys already committed...

I am sure the coaches are getting the best guys they can and that some of our internal evaluations are slightly different than the recruiting services, but the often posted idea that somehow a 3* guy committed to us must have been our top target is a little ridiculous.

And that's not a knock on any of our guys, just an acknowledgment that 5* guys aren't usually ratted that way by mistake.

Maybe Sumlin is tired of dealing with the attention ***** drama queen attitudes that come with the 4 and 5 stars.

Edit: seriously? Whoar is a bad word on here? Weak sauce.

He signed a bunch of them a few months ago so I doubt it. There are nearly 40 guys in Texas that are composite 4 or 5 stars. We have pledges from 3 of them. Hopefully the recent trend of 3 star commits will give way to 4 and 5 star commits in the next 45 days.

If you cant use than/then properly then your opinion is not valid.

But seriously, were talking about 5 stars just as much as the previous years. But the number of 3 stars committed shouldnt be a huge concern considering many teams also have a large number of 3 stars committed currently. Just wait until the higher profile guys shake out and the lower ranked guys get a bump and see where we sit. But i would advise everyone to trust Chavis and Sumlin or other coaches evaluations over a recruiting websites

Can you people that are complaining please list the 4 and 5 stars we are targeting that are committing elsewhere? I can think of maybe one in this class. All the rest that we are targeting still have their commitment up in the air.

I would rather have 8 4/5 stars commit on signing day than 10 commit early and then two end up going somewhere else like last year, wouldn't you?

I think it is because they all committed to LSU will be there pledge class is chock-full of four stars!

Teams with mostly 3 star players usually do not do well over time against teams stacked with 4 & 5 star players. That is why there is so much importance placed on recruiting.

We were sixth in the SEC in recruiting last year. Need to improve in order to be more competitive.
