In all honesty, as an Aggie, talking football, here's my take:
Strong wasn't the splash hire the Big Money LH Boosters wanted. One of the biggest, Red, made that clear from the get go. Red backed off after talking to Strong, but he, and others, will be expecting big things, fairly quickly.
You can't judge a new coach based on his first year, especially in a situation Strong walked into. But you can bet everyone will be watching, closely, how he puts together a recruiting class, all on his own. Putting aside 2013 and 2014, for obvious reasons, Texas grew used to Top 10 and Top 5 classes. This will be Strong's first class, and he's looking at outside the Top 15. If he then goes into the season and shows regression, or even only slight improvement, that's the first flames of a hot seat. Then he has his second solo recruiting class. If that one fails to show improvement, say a Top 15 class, the flames get hotter. For his third season, the expectation will be significant improvement. Maybe not a championship, but a solid showing- top 3 in the B12, a good bowl game, probably a solid bowl win. Without that, I say Texas pulls the pin.
