Was there. Sword was drawn reactively after the perfectly executed jr high push over crouching accomplice move by small Marxist cheer guys. Clearly a very bad move but at least comprehensible.

It's fine. Caz must be part of the, " Well that's fine those guys did all of that, but I'm part of the what have you done to make me proud lately crowd".

What's the over/under that we'll see a sword brandished tonight???

The short video shows the BEGINNING of the incident, not the end. Hood was pushed down twice. The video shows the first time. Saber was drawn when he ran on the field and kicked the SMU cheerleader.

I think it's interesting how so many of you remember it differently.

Doesn't matter how you cut it, Hood screwed up royally. Just comes across as Aggies being sore losers.

I think it's weird how the memories differ, too. My clearest memory is of the beginning of the incident (shown in the video) and of the end (when Billy Cannon, Jr. bear hugged Hood and pulled him away). I do remember the second push down, but by that time Hood had already made a fool of himself so It was almost a footnote.

There have been studies done on how people remember and other.people's memories and other factors will change what is remembered. It's pretty cool.

the crowd would probably cheer on a streaker at the same game, would that mean te streaker was doing a good thing.

The cadet was way out of line and as is often done, people change the story to defend or put the incident into a positive light when it should be embarassing.

My wife was there with me, and she filled in the gaps when we talked about it. The short video confirmed some things too. (notice at the beginning of the video as SMU cheerleaders are getting up off the ground. It is clearly the beginning of the incident) What my wife remembers most was that people just stood around and did nothing as it unfolded. There was some effort to restrain the SMU guys, but Hood was just allowed to go nuts for way too long.

Not a good incident. Still wish we had shelled Waco though.

I recollect that Hood was pushed over the smu guy on all fours first. Saber was then brandished. He was pushed over again as shown in the video.

Dangerous situation made by Hood and he was punished. Fortunate for him that he was not arrested.

He got his ass kicked twice? Hilarious.

The video pretty much confirms my recollection, that he had already brandished the saber before his first contact with the SMU cheerleader, and that the prank knockdown occurred later. The knockdown in the video happened first. I'll admit that if the video had not been posted, I might be second guessing my own memory as I read all the accounts that say he didn't pull the saber until after the prank, but the video shows it exactly as I remembered it.

Video is inconclusive at best. Given his cover is already on the ground and the smu guy he boots appears to be getting up from being on all fours, I'd say it also supports (or at least doesn't rule out) the more traditional version of events.

The video appears to be the 1st incident, with the smu cheeleaders on the ground (3 of them) to spell out the letters and hood running up with saber drawn, kicking the cheerleader up yelling something to the effect of "get the eff off my field" while the other two suprised cheerleaders get up as well in the melee.

So you guys are saying after all that they left his ass out there to get into another incident? How in the hell was he not escorted out after drawing a saber on somebody in a heated exchange... On national television?

Kyle field is not a memorial

It was during the Fran and Sherm years, well that was more like a mausoleum than a memorial.....

Maybe that's what they give the Corps, but a Saber is an edge rather than point weapon. It has one sharp edge vs two, but it's designed for slashing, not stabbing.

Ok, fair enough, the sabers used by the Corps of Cadets are ceremonial, not 1800's era battle weapons. The sabers used by the Corps don't have a sharp edge.

I think the memory of the pushover someone on all fours may be from those that saw it from far away. It may have happened but I don't recall that part.

It unfolded right below me. I was on the 2nd deck.

I do remember the chatter about SMU cheerleaders being told to stay off the field, so that part is true, so when they went on to the field, it was intentional provocation.

I remember Greg Hood pulling the saber and running, more of a scoot with his boots and holding the scabbard with one hand and the saber in the air with the other.

He made it out there, kicked the guy on the ground, got pushed over, then escorted out down the track.

I don't remember the Billy Cannon hug, but might have happened, but the whole incident happened on the SMU side of the field.

Billy was pretty brash. Remember him getting arrested in Hunstville for throwing a guy through plate glass window at Jack in the Box at 11:30 pm the night before the game.

Tom Wilson let him play the next day because he gave him the benefit if the doubt he could have made it back to A&M by curfew at midnight if he would not have been arrested.

So Billy would probably appreciate a saber yielding CT attacking male cheerleaders.

I don't think that game was on television, even regional. (There was no ESPN in those days, and its was not a big game by any stretch of the imagination.) And the fact that Hood was able to continue to rant for some time after first pulling the saber is a mystery to me, too. But that is what happened. The only people who stepped in were anonymous sideline security personnel who set about holding back SMU cheerleaders. As I recall, no attempt was made to restrain Hood until Billy Cannon bear hugged him from behind and dragged him away.

How could a football field ever be a memorial? People ****ing play games on it all the time.

A saber is a kind of sword. The sabers-are-never-sharp comment was dumb. What do you think dragoons fought with?

I like the OP. He came to set the record straight but was quickly proven wrong by many other accounts and a video. Well done Greg, glad you came to tell your side of the story

I was a freshman who grew up in a family who were staunch tu fans and supporters. I had recently spurned tu to attened A&M. My parents were at that game, their first Aggie game. I always chuckle when thinking that was their first Aggie football experience. The good news? My entire family soon switched allegiance to the good guys!
