I noticed the odd spacing of the rows as well. To me it looks like that deck may be designed similar to the way the architect did the first level at TCU's stadium. There the first level seats have bar/counter in front of them for their food and drinks to rest on.

It significantly reduced the number of seat rows on that level. I am really dissappointed if I am correct because it reduces the number of fans close to the field and this the noise. And of course this is the same architect.
That's not the case. There are 20 rows of seats and 10 have been installed.

seats3d.com doesn't show any sort counter on the west side first deck, just seats.

The rows where they haven't installed seats are the rows where the riser pieces meet. It sort of looks like they brackets they are using on the other rows won't work there, and they are having to come up with a work around.

Moot point as there are 20K (on average) more fans at Kyle and the stadium is enclosed...any trivial noise reduction because rich Ags are busy consuming expensive food and libations is negated by the aforementioned increase in loud, poor folks elsewhere in the stadium. Ta da!!!!

I mean, the way Kyle's built, the people are stacked on top of each other, not spreading away from the field a la the Big House.

It's gon' rain noise. Can't wait.

Thanks for the clarification Fitch.

And not the same Architect - Populous out of Kansas City is doing Kyle Field; HKS out of Dallas did Amon G. Carter at TCU.

I think Populous used to be part of a larger firm called HOK. Probably gets confused often.

Correct, Populous used to be HOK Sports, but split when HOK began to lose interest in sports(from what I've heard)

For those with questions about the edge of the grass being put down, I took the most recent archive photo from the construction cams and overlaid an archive photo from last season

- Most Recent

- Last year's field

- Overlay

As you can see, there is about a 8-10ft buffer zone from the sideline of the playing field to the edge of the grass they are putting down now, then the gravel starts

Does anyone know what that buffer zone will be covered with?

It looks like there will be about 8-10 ft of actual grass from the sideline of the playing field to the edge of the grass that they have put down so far. Beyond that, I do not know

Total guess here, but they could end up filling in the edges with grass, but they're doing that second because it doesn't have the same drainage needs.

As someone who couldn't make it to any home games last season, did the corps march in and around on the grass?

Wonder if we're going to have sod problems again during games

Yes to march in last year

Has to be grass overlayed on the white gravel. I think what you are seeing is that we want to go ahead and get the football fields roots down and growing firm and to go ahead and fill in the gaps between the rows. There is no rush to lay the grass in the areas where PMC will be walking.

I just can't see them leaving the gravel as is. Fball players will be tracking that stuff onto the grass and can u imagine someone getting pushed into sideline and slides into the gravel causing severe road rash; both health hazards.

From the way they did the drainage underneath the gravel, it does make me think it will be something permeable (like grass or decomposed granite) as opposed to "rubber track stuff." Were the equine tiles of the previous track permeable?

looks like grass to the walls on pictures

It will be grass. The system underneath the yet-to-be laid grass is designed to handle the stress of heavy equipment, foot traffic, etc.

Since they are likley using hydraulically driven gang reel cutting units to mow the turf, they would never be okay using gravel as a track. Getting rocks caught in the cutting units can destroy the reel and bedknife. Thats a very expensive replacement.

I assume that they are planning on installing some type of paver or composite rubber track perfectly coplanar with the field. I think the soil would be too shallow for there to be grass installed there as well.

If they are going with rubber, I hope it isn't dark-gray/black like the old track. That looked too much like asphalt from my nosebleed seats and on TV. How about maroon?

It could be artificial turf over the gravel. I've seen that done before.

Now that there is finally something to see, they pick this time to take the cameras down for server maintenance? Guess there must be some major trade secrets involved with laying down sod.

They are sprinkling the ashes of dead BMDs. Cameras should be back up in a bit.
