I say only get a diamond if you go extra innings...i.e., a Masters or something. I say you go with the plain ring for a bachelors and add a diamond to indicate a greater achievement.
That's what I did. Had the diamond put in after I graduated from Law School. It was my father's diamond (also an Ag), so it has special meaning to me. Putting your dad's diamond in your Ring, or carrying on some other family tradition, is what being an Ag is all about. Of course, I don't really care what anyone else thinks about my Ring, so I just did what I wanted to do.

I have always heard that you don't put a diamond into your ring until you become a diamond endowed donor. I don't know if that's true or not but it does make sense if you ask me.

Antiqued with diamond.

If your diamond is medium you don't lose the stars.
Hope you have better memories than me. I got my ring the day bonfire fell.

Do whatever you want its your ring.

No diamond. I have a '42 ring with a diamond, but my '99 ring is still as designed (and worn left-handed).

No diamond for me. I love the shield and stars. Ever hear of "gilding the lily"???

I say only put in a diamond if it's a special diamond -- like your grandmother's engagement ring diamond, or a family diamond, etc.

Getting a diamond from Balfour seems kind of meaningless to me.

I agree Johnny. Your diamond needs to have almost as significant a tradition as your ring, which mine does. It's been in my family for ages and my father held onto it for the exact reason of giving it to his son when he got his ring. A balfour diamond wouldn't mean near as much, IMO.

I agree. THe diamond must be a family diamond as mine is. It also helps that it is small and fits nicely in the shield. The shield outline is still visible and stars intact.

On the other hand, why would anyone go with the antique? It's light buying trendy clothing that is trying to have the appearance of being authenticly old. Bottom line is..ITS FAKE. Not only that but it looks dirty.

I think antique or regular depends totally on your skin tone. I know on me, the non-oxidized ring just looks odd, much like the antique does on others.

My father has always had his oxidized and i think it looks the classiest. But, I know people that the all-gold looks better on because of their skin tone.

I was going to get a diamond but a female friend told me that diamonds on men's aggie rings look gay.

So I have a natural finish 10k ring. It is priceless.

j_taraba,
I can't believe they let you get three rings.
I couldn't decide when I got my ring so I figured that I couldn't go wrong waiting and thinking about it. I could always get one but it would be hard to undo it. Time passed and I grew to like the stripes on the shield enough that I decided against the diamond.

The only reason there is a diamond option is so that Balfour can make a chunk of money selling it to you and installing it.

I'll take the antique finish with no diamond regardless of how many degrees I have.

jmtamu,
What exactly is the "oxidized finish"? What does it look like? Just curious. Is that what they called the "rose finish"?
jmtamu

Oxidized is the antique look (the dark ink in the grooves). Far left, but it looks bad in this picture, you get the idea though:

No freakin way. No diamonds. No way, No how.

I don't know who came up with that silly idea anyway.

One of the coolest things about being an aggie is that ring--its unique and universally recognizable even to non aggies. Why would you want yours to look different.

I take mine very seriously. Its the 1st thing I put on in the morning and the last thing I take off at night. I mean I even feel it to make sure I put it on the right way because I put it on BEFORE I turn on the light. The only times I take it off are when I am doing something that might mess IT up or ME up. I did not wear it in the field when I was serving w/the USMC-I didn't want to lose a finger.

No diamond, No way.

Greater love hath no man than this...

For a guy -- antique with no diamond. Like other posters said, you can get a diamond later.

I personally like the old army look of a worn down ring, that makes younger folks ask what it was like when you were there. (I'm not to that point yet.)

I just ordered mine a few weeks ago. I didn't order it with any ice but I'm thinking of putting some in it. If I do the max size I will get would be to fill the shield. I got the natural finish to. Of course getting the diamond put in all depends on the cash flow at the time. If I do put in a diamond I'll take it to the old Ag to do it, John D. Huntley. I have started to think about what the others have posted and may side with the traditional no diamond look. But to me the old fashioned Antiqued look is just plain dirty looking. Yeah the all gold look may be a little gawdy but it definetely catches the eye and people immediately know your an Ag. I'm just ready for September 8th, delivery day. I didn't tell my family that I had ordered it so I'm just going to invite them all down for the football game that weekend and take them with me to dunk it. Especially my bro b/c he would have given an arm and a leg to go to A&M but didn't have the grades to do it. So I feel like he would appreciate me getting me ring. He sort of lives as an Ag through me in a way. We were at an Astros game and we were leaving the stadium taking the elevator down. Some old Ag rode down with us and saw my brother wearing an Ag tshirt. The ole Ag asked my bro if he was an Aggie. I cut him off and said yeah, he's majoring in Nuclear engineering. It was truly hilarious to see the look on my bro's face. The ole Ag was just thoroughly impressed...LOL. It was all in good fun. Plus I consider my bro to be just as much an Ag as I am, he has the spirit....just didn't have the grades.

Gig 'em Ags!

In ancient times there was only 1 ring style, that was plenty. For years a ring cost $25. Class of 73 paid about $40; next year we had to pay $63 and thought we were getting robbed....LOL.

The new style rings look kinda tinny. Leave it just like it is, no diamond needed; messes up the 29 stars found on the ring. My A&M ring is NOT jewelry.

What do you mean the new style rings look tiny? My friend has a 1948 ring and it is almost exactly the same as mine ('03) except for the class year and it says "college" instead of "university."

Everytime he lets me look at his ring I think about "losing" it

Put me in the "Not" column. The diamonds detract from the classic look in my opinion.

I have natural finish class ring and without the diamond. Mostlt women from what I have seen get the diamond option. It is far more recognizeable without the diamond on a man's hand. Mine gets noticed all the time by Ags and others I meet.
As class of '91, we had only two choices in our ring selection - antiqued(black ink) or the rose finish.
Most of us went to jewelers and had the rose finish "stripped" off to make the natural look you are able to get now. Be glad because stripping the finish was supposed to void the warranty.
