Long, long time ago, the Corps used to play a benefit football game called "Elephant Bowl". We were coached by volunteer Aggie players. We practiced for two weeks and got to use Aggie team practice equipment.

The game was played on a Sat. morning in early April at Kyle Field. They charged like 2 or 3 bucks to get in and all the money went to March of Dimes. We raised a few thousand dollars each year.

My senior year, it was the Band and Air Force as the maroon team and the Army and Marines as the white team.

We won that year, 7-2. We would have had a shoutout, but Dan Quinn punted the ball into our blocking back and the ball went backwards through the end zone for a safety! I played outside linebacker and actually got two sacks. Funny how that was one of the highlight of my Corps career.

So, when did they stop doing, "Elephant bowl??

In 87 the Brigade and Regiment played the wing and Band. We (B&R) beat the ever-livin' hell outta the wing and BQs 21-14. We were coached by Shea Walker and Larry Kelm. It was Parents weekend and we played on Kyle. What a blast!

That was the last year I'm aware of it being played. The following year, they couldn't get Kyle field. Someone told me it was liability reasons. I

I remember the barn burner Elephant Bowl of 1981. BQ/Wing - 7, Brigade/Regiment - 2. The Brigade/Regiment's safety came when the BQ/Wing team were punting from deep in their own End Zone and the punt ricocheted of the up back's helmet and out of the end zone. Unbelievable amount of talent on both those teams. Not any football talent but talent, nonetheless.

Must have been the same game Southlake. I was the up back. I did not remember that Dan was the punter. You are right, it was a fun time.

FDT 87,

87 was a great Elephant Bowl. But before the Elephant Bowl, we joined forces and played the frat daddies about 2 weeks earlier. They won 12-0 if memory serves. They had a huge full back from the A&M scout team that ran over me all day.

I was your middle linebacker and defensive captain. Kelm was a fun coach and I see him every now and then and we talk about the games.

That was some serious fun.

I threw a touchdown pass in the '87 game for the BQ/AF team. It was off a field goal attempt, the snap was slow, so I rolled right, saw a white jersey and threw it. I never saw it caught as the whole jarhead/grunt defense tackled me!

It was Corps vs. Non-Reg in my day, I believe it was called the "12th Man Bowl."

After spring training, graduating Aggie football Seniors held tryouts, ran the practices and coached the game, which was played in full-pads and at full speed under the lights on Kyle Field.

I tried out twice, but was cut both times.

As I remember, candidates for yell leader were on the track for at least part of the game.

C. K. Esten did the announcing from the pressbox.

I thought we got our butts kicked in that KA game. I hope and pray I am wrong. I hate those b@stards.

Yes...those were good times. My fondest memory contains getting run over by the Regt/Bde fullback every time they would run the ball to the strong side. I played strong safety. That was my first and only football playing experience. I truly sucked at it.

OK, guys from 87, I have most of the game on tape. I remember the fake field goal attempt/TD pass, Great call.

And yes, I also played in the game against the KAs, (played receiver that game), but have tried to forget it, because we could never get our offense moving, until late in the game.

Fidoduga? I must know you. This is Chad Burke.

I was part of the 81 game for the Airforce. Quinn may have given us the 2 pts but he saved you guys also. I had a punt return going up the left sideline and had nothing but turf in front of me and I din't see Quin and he knocked me out of bounds. I score there except for him.

Real difference in the game was coaching. Russel Labhart, was your defensive coach, David Brothers was our O coach, David was a fullback and wanted to cram the ball all day. we had three pass paterns in our book. A button hook , an out dnd run deep. I was very frustrated with out offensive philosophy and play calling. I had a bunch of catches but never ran a pattern that gave me a chance to run after the catch.

Good memeories though and a it was a good game. I think Russell made the difference.

FDT 87, that wasn't a fake fg, it was out of necessity. The frat game you made a great catch on a pass across the middle that gave us a first down, and then I threw an interception deep in their territory. We didn't have much of a rushing threat if I remember correctly.

I had forgot about the Army vs Air Force Corps football game. Thanks for reminding me. Do not even think about remembering the score. Yep I was class of '61.

We won one game my senior year. A sign on the way south out of town for Christmas read Highway 6 A&M 0. That is the only score I remember.

Mr. Flowers I presume. Man, you gave us a spark when you came in. You probably should've started and QB'd the whole game. We only needed 13 stinkin' points.

CBATT,

Yes, the KA's beat us, 12-0. But it was close and a defensive struggle. I think they got one TD on an interception and can't remember how they got the other.

They had a lot better athletes than we did but we were darn sure tougher than them.

Hey Chuck! I'll have to dig that thing out and make some copies. You'll have to forgive the quality though, my mom did the filming.

About a week after the game I got the tape, and was all juiced to show it to all the guys at a team party, and wouldn't you know it, good ol' mom only filmed when I was on the field. Needless to say, all the guys on the defense gave me a pretty hard time when we viewed it.

I was a KA and played against the Corps in a charity game at Kyle in '85. Seemed like it was about the same score as what y'all are referring to (12-0 or 12-6 or so). Don't remember there being another one in '87.

Ours was definitely spring of 87. I thought it was the first time we had done the game with the KA's also. I guess they did one in 85.

Our score was 12-0. You sure about the year?

Dan Quinn punted that ball right into John Blackburn's back. I was blocking on the outside and had no idea where the hell the ball went!! When we found out, we laughed so hard we were cryin' out there!!

OPAG -Yeah that was a big hit by Quinn on your punt return. I was pissed at Quinn cause I thought I had the angle and he cut in front and got the big hit!! I remember you got up and threw the ball at him!! Funny stuff. And you're right too about Labhardt. Man we had some intense practices with that wild man!!

Man, that was fun! Amazing how I can remember that game clearly, but no many of my HS games. (Prolly cause my HS team always got beat!)

Southlake,

The punter( I honestly can't remember if it was Dan punting or not, your memory is better than mine on that) kicked the ball into the back of my helmet. I was the up back and I am not John Blackburn. Not sure if John was on the field at the time or not but I remember the thud of the ball on the back of my helmet. I'm a former BQ, initials WS.

Remember it well. In fact, the Fish in the corps got to borrow the Yell Leaders' unis to lead yells during the game.

I was a fish yell leader for the game & as fate has it, one of our 'heads was elected that spring for Yell the following yr. When he saw us in the Yell unis, he crapped us out. Like he needed a reason anyway.

RAT90 was one of the O.D.'s for that '87 Elephant Bowl. How he got that gig I have no idea...anyway, he was dressed up in full regalia (think Patton) except that instead of senior boots he wore ropers and those leg wraps that the Cav uses... some of the other fish O.D.'s were actually wearing real senior boots. Something just didn't seem right about that.... Anyway, dude had like 50 medals, several cords and diamonds wrapped all the way around his collar. Hilarious.

Hey, RAT, post the picture.

HA81, so it was you! Yeah, it was Quinn who punted you in the head. Dan and I talk about it now and then. I had always thought it was John Blackburn. I think David LePori was the fullback, just not blocking on the punt team. Jason Roosma here BTW.
OPAG
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Southlake it wasn't Dan I through the ball at. It was the guy who smacked into me after the play goint to celebrate with Dan. Dan's hit didn't hurt but the guy going by clipped under the chin with his shoulder pad and that hurt.

I new Dan from Gator 2 our rivals for the athletic flag, which we won by the way! We had pretty good buds with Gator 2, it was a good friendly rivalry.

That game was kind of hard for me as Russel was a pisshead from my outfit and one your corner backs, Ron, was also from my outfit, but was an AF commission so chose to play with you guys as well. I schooled Ron pretty good that day but the one time I was clean open for a TD the QB looked the other way. Oh I remember the frustration well.! HEHEHE

I don't know if it was the beginning of the end, but my zip year, Slocum wouldn't let us play at Kyle because they had just put down new astroturf. I don't know what he thought we were going to do to the field, but that was the story we got. I thought it was a pretty crappy thing to do to us.

I did not make the team spring of 1974, but I do remember this bit of trivia. A good friend who was the CO of B-2 was a good track guy in HS and was working as 1st team TB for the Army side. A few days before the game one of the Army defensive line guys fell on the back of his lower leg during a pile up, freak injury thing. Broke his leg; wound up being so bad he lost his contract BUT....did not lose his spirit. When Final Review came he was still in a lower leg cast, he painted it brown, attached his spurs and peglegged it around for Pass In Reivew. Pic made the front of the Batt and is a great memory. Names aren't important but both guys were buds and there was no intent to harm. Army won that year, 21-14. 4 of my BQ buds were on the Army team (Both starting OTs, starting C, 2nd team FB), 2 on the AF team (2nd team DB, starting ILB).

I threw the other TD pass for the AF/BQ team in the '87 game.

That game was a blast - the month of practice was a hoot as well.

"Mr. Flowers I presume. Man, you gave us a spark when you came in. You probably should've started and QB'd the whole game. We only needed 13 stinkin' points." - I THINK NOT.
