Uncover for the god damned songs(Spirit, national anthem, Texas, our Texas)and the flag. Is it that hard to show a simple sign of respect to your country and school? The rest of my new army brethren disappoint me, the guys arguing that uncovering isn't a tradition and shouldn't be observed are probably the same p00ns that cross their fingers and boo. It'd be better if they didn't show up.

Edit for clarification of songs to uncover for.

student section, very few... hats 70s 80s If you wore one you would get yelled at. I didn't bother taking one. Alumni on the other hand did whatever. its always been a tradition lol that the former student side did not follow much in the way of game tradition... didn't do the yells other than the songs, didn't stand necessarily or uncover per se although you should compare those hats to today... they are old folks like me now. Kids can do whatever they want. I really don't care.

Some real idiots on here. Glad I don't work with some of y'all. You misinterpret what people are saying to a fault like a 5th grader.

No **** sherlock, we take our damn hats off during the anthem, spirit, etc.

But for a damn yell? You're putting the yell tradition on par with the Anthem?

What the hell are you "showing respect for " by uncovering to say "BTHO_____"

Uncover for Texas our Texas? Yeah, you can suck on my (white) chocolate salty balls. Had some geezer tell me to do that at Kyle once, I just said "Thanks for the tip gramps" and kept minding my own business.

I put this in the other UNCOVER thread, but it belongs here too. I was in school from 1988 to 1992. During that period of time uncovering during yells was not a tradition. And its still not a tradition. It was something that some did and other's didn't do. And from what I recall everyone was fine with that.

In reality, there is no good reason that can be given why it is acceptable to scream uncover at someone else. Reasons people attempt to use are:

1) Respect - but its clearly not respectful to scream at someone else. Particularly if that person is a guest and is unfamiliar with A&M.

2) Manners – see my statement regarding respect and manners above.

3) Tradition - no matter what people say, uncovering for yells is clearly not a tradition. If it was, the entire student body & all the former students would know about it, just like we all know the rules about the MSC, the yells, the Century Tree, words to our War Hymn and Spirit, etc. I feel like I’d know about it even if it was a lapsed tradition. For example, when I was in school the Corps was no longer polishing the Academic Building’s dome. But I knew that it was a tradition before they were forced to stop.

4) Patriotism – yells have nothing to do with patriotism to our country or our state. It is common and courteous to remove your hat during certain songs/times. But yells are not part of that. Yells are about getting fired up and supporting our team.

5) Unity – I don’t see how screaming at someone will help Aggies be more unified in our observance and participation in yells.

Why don't you worry where the other 25,000 students are on game day rather then *****ing at the ones that are there!!!

Cadets stand uncovered in Kyle for the whole game, so their hats are off all the time anyway. I choose to uncover during the War Hymn to show respect for my school and of course during the Anthem, but I don't recall any tradition for nonregs to uncover during yells. Do/Don't--who cares--but don't get riled about it......

No reason to uncover in Kyle Field. Its hot, and sunny.

I've got to admit, this thread is pretty damn funny. Everyone is so passionate about both sides.

These are the things that are evolved by others talking and speaking like they are in the KNOW. These are the traditions etc. Do this, don't do that. Especially for those that weren't in the Corp. or attended Fish Camp. I transferred to A&M in 1992. I didn't experience Fish Camp, so I didn't "Learn" as people put it earlier in the thread, about everything A&M.

My learning was through attending games, going to school, listening and doing what other people were doing. Don't walk on the grass next to the MSC, take your hat off in the MSC. Don't walk on Kyle Field, uncover during yells, texas is tu, etc.

Now of course I realize that certain things aren't "Law" or tradition, but when you see a cadet at midnight yell run and tackle someone running across Kyle Field, it kind of justifies the rule, in your mind (since no one told you otherwise) that ......i guess that is something true. Same for uncover. I had no reason to think it wasn't something you should do. Everyone was doing it. It wasn't a big deal to me to just take my hat off for a minute, so i thought nothing of it. Like I said, its a hat, nothing else. SO no harm done right? These things are small and insignificant, and I think that is why so many people just assumed they were traditions.

I never got upset that a person didn't take their hat off at a game or midnight yell. Not everyone is outside of the 2% right? To each his own. Who cares.

Now it did disturb me when you had that person yelling like it was a sin to not uncover. I just took them as dumb. The yell was over by then anyway. Move on.

Now I know each person's college years were different. Different experiences. I just know that during my time which was from 91-96 that most people believed uncover was something you do. The same for not walking on Kyle Field.

Again, they are not traditions, which is fine. Just wanted to point out that each experience is different. But we need to respect people's opinions and if they are just fine with their hat on and not standing the whole game, its just as well. Let's just enjoy the game!

I'm more bothered these days at how damn fast the yells are. What the hell is the rush? Its starts to sound like a joke how fast they go through them....fight..fight..farmers, farmers fight. Is there a limit to how many yells we can do? Same for the band, we used to hear more band at games, now its just Slovacek Sausage ads all the time.

"It was a widely-accepted custom that at yell practice when you did a yell, you took your hat off." Since when? Certainly not from '78-'82. That's the silliest thing I've ever heard of.

Why would anyone wear a hat at night to begin with?

Also there '78 - '82 and never heard anything about taking hat off except in MSC.

If in doubt, uncover. Christ almighty. I teach my kids that today. All women appreciate a man that will uncover. Our rule is, if in doubt, uncover with ladies present. It is just respectful. Not just a corps thing or a cowboy thing. Its a gentlemenly thing.

PS: I remember doing it 91-95 but I don't remember any fights about it.

You people realize that only military and Ags understand what "uncover" means, right?

And I agree with this guy above me. It's a good rule of thumb to remove your hat when:

Speaking to a lady.
Walking into any building.
When we honor a flag, Texas or US
When we honor the fallen.

I always thought it was weird when people uncovered for yells though

I Generally agree. With the exception of the MSC, I was never taught to " uncover" except when I walked into the O Club at Fort Knox & was warned, the next round would be on me - & the place was always packed. "Uncovering" was a sign of good manners, not Aggie traditions.
Hats are for sun protection. I wear a broad rim hat in Kyle for that reason. I don't remove it during the National Anthem because I'm saluting the flag.

Traditions are owned by the current students and kept by the current Corps. Good luck with any other approach because it isn't durable.

Five years of trying to pretend otherwise is Zoo gold, though.

Etiquette for gentlemen wearing hats is well established. if unaware and curious please use your Google. Hat traditions at TAMC I can almost guaranteed are based off of these long standing customers. I fail to see how yells could fall under any of the accepted hat wearing customs requiring hat removal. FWIW when I was there, class of 91, we absolutely did not remove our hats for yells.

Thread summary:. Uncovering is fine, yelling at other people to uncover is rude.
