Actually, Texas Fight was written because of Aggies and not as some "team" of the week song.

http://mbe187.music.utexas.edu/Longhornband/History/Songs.aspx

From a 1952 letter by Colonel Walter S. Hunnicutt on the history of Texas Fight:

"I wrote 'Texas Fight' ... in an attempt to counteract the songs and yells of the Texas Aggies, which were not too complimentary to our Student Body and some of which tended to ridicule 'The Eyes of Texas'.

"Long before I entered The University of Texas in 1909 and until about the year 1928 the Aggies had one of the most effective and awe inspiring songs used by any student body any where any time. 'Farmers Fight' at that time was their sacred College song. ... It was to them what 'The Eyes of Texas' had always been to us. The song was a repetition of the words 'Farmers Fight' sung to the well known bugle call 'Taps' in the same slow tempo as the bugle call is used by the army for lights out at night.

"Returning to Marlin, TX after World War One I resumed my practice of attending most of the Texas foot-ball games, especially those with A. & M. It occurred to me that an effective way to strike back at the Aggies was to write a 'Texas Fight' song in answer to their 'Farmers Fight' using the same bugle call 'Taps' changed to lively march time and having 'Texas' throughout the song instead of 'Farmers'. 'Texas Fight' (Texas Taps) is the result."

Tu sings "goodbye to A&M" and unless you went to school at Texas A&M, you're not an Aggie.

Unless you're as awesome as Robert Gates.

He's an Aggie-honorary.

I'm sorry, but that's the way it goes.

I don't mind anyone's fans as long as they don't feel they have right to tell me my university sucks when they haven't attended one themselves. If you want to say the football team sucks, go ahead. But too many sip t-shirt fans go on and on about how bad A&M sucks as a school when they went to TSU or SHSU. It gets old.

In the state of Arkansas there is nothing but The University of Arkansa, the same goes for LSU. This is why these states in particular have HUGE numbers in "t-shirt" fans.... there is NO ONE ELSE!!

Texas has tons of schools & multiple teams in all the professional sports. Texans are very loyal to their school/team so if you are a plumber, you are S*** outta luck (no pun intended). You are a t-shirt fan because you have no connection. That's how we roll in the Texas.

<shrugs> I'll be honest and admit I didn't know the origin of the song. In practice, we may have strayed from the roots of Texas Fight. When I attended UT in the early nineties, one of my orientation speakers explained the bit about changing the team name to whomever we were playing, Makes sense to me, so I'll stick to it.

Old Boonehog, the last time we went to a game in Fayetteville, my husband, who used a cane, had his stick INTENTIONALLY knocked out from under him by some friendly hawgs as we headed to the car after the game. You are correct in saying your fans have no manners. We are trading the sips and turds for you and LSU. I think we can survive the hillbillies, rednecks and whatever, we have practice.

I agree about the animosity towards t-shirt fans.

If you are an Aggie, does your family consider themselves Aggies as well? Even if they never went there but go to the games with you?

What about all those students who couldn't get into A&M but identify with the university?

If you want to have yourself identified as a "former student" then put the sticker on the back of your car.

As far as traditions and cultural differences...if we were all plain vanilla schools there wouldn't be much difference between us, would there? Who wants that? I appreciate the fact that all schools have their cultural oddities and enjoy each for the most part.

But if anybody's drunk and disorderly conduct endangers myself or anyone around me prepare to be skewered.

aggie mindset must change? seems like I hear that from somewhere every week...typically from someone who is ignorant re A&M history, traditions, etc...or from some rival or hostile journalist...

nope. wont do it. why fix something that ain't broke?

I am the only aggie in my family.

They do not consider themselves aggies.

But they are also educated, unlike the majority of sec t-shirt fans.

The first thing SEC folks are going to have to learn is how to communicate concisely.

Second, we don't take well to condescending lectures. Actually, no one does, so maybe next time you write a thesis like that do everyone a favor and delete it before wasting the bandwidth on something no one will read.

An old Ag like me even knew that. Shows what TRADITION really means. Too bad your admin has in the last decade or so decided not to care.

So, some male cheerleader wrote you guys into our fight song because you had numerous references to us in yours? Well by golly then if we aren't the obsessed ones.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
The tsips copied our old fight song to obtain theirs.

Oh, and we're plenty good at drunken brawling when we have to be. We just about had a 10,000 person melee on Kyle field in 1995. We just typically don't choose to make asses of ourselves in public unless it is justified, but we've seen it plenty of times when we played at Tceh, t.u. etc. Tshirt fans...well, pretty much all Aggies have family that is more or less Aggie too.

There will be some culture shock, though, to be sure. We're not nearly as greek as we hear the rest of the SEC is.

Whatever bro. Tech fans travel. ou fans travel. ou people are allright, tech usually are not. we deal with them just fine. Most come away amazed at how civil everyone behaves.

We dont need t-shirt fans. We fill Kyle without them. You might also keep in mind that most states in the southeast dont have pro sports, or got their team fairly recently.

Texas got the Cowboys and Oilers in the early 60s. Plus the state has tons of other professional sports. Arky, Mississippi, Kentucky, and South Carolina have squat, the Saints and Falcons sucked for most of their existence. Miami is not the southeast. The Buccaneers didnt form until the mid 70s and sucked for most of their existence, and Tennessee did not get the titans until the mid 90s.

I have friends from Nebraska, its the same thing- the only game in town. I can deal with people like that. In fact most people from the southeast are allright. Its just the sip and tard fans that come to town with a chip on their shoulder. As long as SEC fans dont have a chip on their shoulder, we should be just fine.

The only place we fuss over the grass is in front of 1 building, the MNC. And if visitors fans dont stay off the grass in front of the MNC, they will end up watering it with their blood. Their choice. Tell them to call Aggie Bail Bonds when they get arrested.

No, Alex acknowledges it seems the Texas Fight was written as a direct response to A&M's song. Alex does feel the anti-A&M thrust of the author has been lost over the years and Alex has related anecdotal evidence for such.

This thread is a perfect example of what we Texas Aggies have to put up with constantly - No nothing jackholes talking out of their azz and trying to perpetuate lies about the A&M/tu history. The two sip fookers on this thread even went to school at tu but in reality are two dumbass Tshirt fans.

It's true enough that tradition is gospel at A&M. Not so much at UT even though we have plenty of own for those that want to learn or follow it. I think most reasonable people would concede the student culture at both schools have been historically very different, but I think that is changing.

Wouldn't you be kinda bitter if you had a bunch of draft dodging rich society boys from a big state university gloating at you and your small military college every time you played eachother in sports? There's a lot of history there. It is what it is.

Things have changed now, though. A&M is nearly every bit as big as t.u.

I love T-shirts fans. They are often your best and most frightening fans.
UTK used to have LOTS of T-shirt fans. The Vols dominated at home into the 90s with plenty of screaming "hillbillies" shouting, drinking, etc., creating a state of absolute fear for opponents and their fans. It was a beautiful and most holy thing. Brings a tear to my eye when I think about it.

Then the tickets prices were jacked up under our illustrious AD, Mikey "The *****" Hamilton. Soon, our loyal "t-shirt"fans were priced out in favor of the hoidy-toidy wine and cheese eaters along with the corporations. The student section was moved away from the prime seating it had and is now a non-factor at the games. Playing in Knoxville, which was once like going to the ninth circle of Hell for opponents, is not the least bit intimidating anymore.

So how one could be against T-shirt fans is beyond me. I don't give a crap where you went to school - just be LOUD AND PROUD!
hornhatinvol
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Maybe I have a totally different mindset. Kyle Field definitely sounds pretty loud - it's louder than our stadium right now. So you must be doing something right.

But t-shirt fans are what makes SEC schools' football fanbases. The school most similiar to TAMU - Auburn - has scores of t-shirt fans.

I'd pay $20 to watch some cadet yell at a group of drunken Crimson Tide fans to "get off the grass" on campus. You'll think "t-shirt fan" when Bubba and Jethro and his six cousins from near Birmingham who never went to the University of Alabama get done with you.

a) The fans who can afford to make the trip and buy the tickets probably won't be acting like a-holes on campus.

and

b) If they do, I don't think it would work out quite the way that you're fantasizing that it would.
