I have two brothers younger than I am. One went to University of Southern Miss other brother to Ole Miss. I have four daughters one to LSU, one to Ole Miss, one to Miss State and one to Georgia. My wife is a Tennessee grad with a MBA from Vandy. How would you like to have a dysfunctional family like this???

I really don't think the OP completely understands the mindset of true SEC fans. Let me explain just tad:

No one cares what you say in your fight song...my Bulldawgs have the line "and to hell with Georgia tech!" as part of the lyric. Last time I checked, NATS,( aka: North Avenue Trade School) has been in the ACC since about78' Say whatever you want to say about TU.

There is some merit to the acceptance of the so called, "t-shirt" fans, but methinks the terminology is a bit different here in the SEC. We just call then fair weather fans. Just because someone did not graduate from our school of choice, well,,,,no one really cares. But even Georgia has a name for UGA grads; "DGD" A DGD is typically a sold out student athlete..."Damn Good Dawg." I think the Barners..AweBarn..uses the phrase "WDE" or "War Damn Eagle" --fondly known to Georgia fans as ..."Wa Eagah Bava"
You will be invaded by thousands of fans on a weekly basis, and those fans are in fact very tribal indeed! But I would be willing to be a paycheck on the fact that you will be mostly impressed with not only the numbers of fans from Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Louisiania, and Tennessee, but you will also be amazed at their genuiness, cordiality, and typical Southerness...just like you are in College Station. Yes they will be rabid no doubt about it, and their sole intent on being in Kyle, will be to silence the 12th Man. But most SEC fans know and undersand respect and tradition. If A&M has a patch of grass that is somehow sacred to the university, the other SEC schools will learn it, and respect it...ask Auburn about respecting agriculutural icons! Toomers Corners trees are just as sacred...as are Georgias vaunted hedges...as is Ole Miss's grove.
Do you need to have a thick skin in the SEC??? Probably more so than in any other conference. You'll have those nice 10-2 or 11-1 seasons when you get everybody in the conferences respect, but the rest of the countr will hate you just because you are in the SEC, and then you'll have one of those 8-4 or 7-5 when the rest of the country still hates you just because you are in the SEC...At least when you go to a bowl game, the conference at least wants to see you win to represent the conference, to show the "SEC Caliber" but lose the game and all hell breaks loose from em all.

Bottom line...sing about U-Texas....Keep the grass neat & posted...create new parking space for the invasion about to come...*sarcasm alert* don't get too arrogant about anything or folks will start to thinking you're courting Nick Saban or wanting to elevate your academics to Vanderbilt status...perhaps most importantyly--honor the A&M traditions because within the heart of the SEC lies the love of traditions. I am a South Carolina fan, and also an attorney by trade. South Carolina came into the SEC from the ranks of the independents the same year that Arkansas joined.
I am looking forward to having A&M in the SEC.
With that said.....absolutely EVERY WORD THE ARKANSAS GUY SAID ABOVE REGARDING THE SEC IS TRUE. We had our own "culture shock" in SC when we joined. Ohh, the fans of the various schools are all congenial enough. (well, except Bama people who will be happy to taunt you even if they are up by 40)
EVERY school you play will rountinely bring 12-15 thousand of their fans to your stadium.....There will be 12,000-15,000 fans that are not "you" EVERY single Saturday. If you are not used to that....get used to it. It IS coming. Everyone travels WELL....except possibly Vanderbilt....and even they will show up with 5-7,000. This "t-shirt" thing he mentions. Also VERY true. Probably 40% of all fans you will deal with really did NOT go to school at the various Universities.
The SEC is a LOT of fun. The fans of the various schools are also a lot of fun. They are great to party with and love to tailgate. (LSU people will come two days early....never will forget the LSU fan from when they were up here about four years ago that WAS PARKING THE CARS when I pulled up in my motor home...I asked, "how are you doing the parking"? His answer, "I have been here since Tuesday and they hired me."....TRUE STORY) You will meet, and deal with....LOTS of fans from all the schools....Each group is unto themselves. (Ole Miss is the most "civilized" The first time you have 20,000 LSU fans show up you will find that THEY are their own breed.....the hardest partiers you will ever meet.....great fun....just don't try to match them shot for shot. (I think most of them start doing shots shortly after birth)
The SEC is a very different animal. I think A%M and the Texas culture matches the "football is religion" approach of the SEC. But, make no mistake, the people you will see starting in (apparently) 2012....some are EXACTLY like the Arkansas guy describes.....the kind that will kill your prized oak and then call to brag about it. (the Auburn story) (Fortunately, 80% are a lot of fun)
I WILL promise....The SEC fan (even Ole Miss)is never going to be accused of being "polite tea sippers"...(by the way, we make fun of UNC up here for that same sort of thing) The crowd you have coming (regardless of which school they are coming from are more likely to be chugging a bottle of Jack Daniels than sipping tea.
I look forward to A&M being one of us. You will enjoy it. But there will be a culture shock when you discover, like I did years ago, that "these people (from the SEC schools) are Damn serious about football.....and there sure are a LOT of them" Welcome.

I have a feeling the other fans might sing "goodbye to texas university" with us.

My father is a t-sip graduate who openly roots for A&M and despises his alma mater. How you like dem Apples???!!! (To the OP: He is also a graduate of the University of Arkansas Medical School so is part Hawg (of sorts).)

I've missed 5 games since I was 7 years old. I am now 22 and still hold season tickets.

I donate good money every year to get a good parking spot behind Olsen to tailgate.

I love this University, even if they don't love me.

BTW, Aggie's view of T-shirt fans is totally skewed IMHO. It's one thing if somebody jumps on the bandwagon, another thing if one grew up being a huge fan....Just sayin

I've been a t- shirt fan all my life. Most of my family never went to college and I almost didn't either. When I finally did go, I went to a div. III school in oklahoma. Always remained a loyal fan of the Aggies though. Over the years I became a fan of the university and everything it stands for.

I've never thought of myself as an Aggie and never represented myself as such. I've met many Aggies at games/tailgates and they all treated me like family. I've also made many Aggie friends through work. Not a single one has ever had any contempt for me as a "t-shirt" fan. I think it is mostly an internet thing. In other words, I don't think Aggies have as big a problem with it as it appears when surfing TexAgs.

Aggie's respect all colleges except that college down yonder. I have personally seen an old ag grab a young ag by the hand and make them apologize to a Nebraska fan for making an @ss of themselves.

complaining about t-shirt fans is stupid. were not good enough in football for ppl to like us for our talent like alabama texas oklahoma etc.

Our fight song still has a line in it about Ga Tech... (send the yellow jackets to a watery grave) and it has another line that says: "remember the Rose Bowl, we'll win then"

So fight songs are more about history than current events or attitudes; at least to most of the SEC people.

wb: We're familiar with LSU fans showing up by the thousands. We had an h&h series with them until they ran away because we beat them too often. Yes, I remember last year's cotton bowl. There's nothing wrong with being a fan of a school you didn't actually attend. We could use a few hundred thousand more. A "t-shirt fan" is a jerk who tries to prove their "worthiness" by being hyper obnoxious to their opponents thereby actually hurting "their" school's image. It's like driving someone else's car: abusing it doesn't cost you personally.
