but what Larry Stegent did on the last play of the tt game in 67 puts him on my list

On the last play of the '67 TT game Edd Hargett ran the ball in from the 15 or 20. Did Stegent throw a block for him?

Greg Hill...was a man child

Maybe my all time favorite Aggie. Very hard with so many great Aggie football players over my time (born in 1980)

May not have been THE best, but I loved me some Rodney Thomas. He'd get some consideration for Top 5 IMO.

He is my favorite Aggie RB.

Darren Lewis was good. No doubt about it. But give props to the fullback that led the way for him.
I was a school mate of Curtis Dickey from middle school through high school. He was the best I have ever seen.

Definitely NOT Darren Lewis.

Many of you confuse offensive line greatness for RB greatness. Don't feel bad, it just means you are an average fan with an average understanding of football.

If you follow the NFL, you will quickly realize that there is an awful lot of parity among running backs. And that outside of a projected HOF-caliber RB, it's dumb to take a RB in the top 15. And arguably dumb to take a RB in the first round at all. Take a look at the most productive backs this year in the NFL, and where they were drafted. Hell, look at Green Bay yesterday.

It's much more a function of the quality of your OL.

Darren Lewis was a quality back. He was able to take advantage of a dominant line and a dominant team. To his credit. He was great. But not the best ever at A&M.

Darren Lewis, while at A&M, was our best and most productive back ever. Some of the names thrown around on this thread would need THREE seasons to get to Darren's best season. It is all subjective so what he should rely on is running yards from scrimmage. We aren't talking NFL - we are talking best (most yards=most productive) while at A&M = D. Lewis.

Well, duh, if we are just talking stats, why even have a conversation. Just post the stats and be done with it.

NFL draft picks:

Curtis Dickey: 5th overall

Darren Lewis: 161st overall

I think this pretty well wraps things up.

I waited a long time to get on this thread....gotta give shout outs to the great players who came before my time....Joeh Hunt, Jitterbug Henderson, and John Kimbrough....in the time of my youth unquestionably John David....Lary Stegent was a first round draft pick from the Stallings era....Bubba Bean from the early Bellard Era...the incomparable Curtis Dickey who may be the best pure athlete we ever had at running back....Keith Woodside from Jackie....Darren Lewis....but I tell you what the young man we had running at the end of the year may be about as good as any of them...he was tough as nails coming down the stretch...

Not really considering Tank failed a drug test forcing a fall.

I'd go this route:
Kimbrough versus Crow (worst AD ever!) (geezers)

Darren Lewis versus Dickey (probably Dickey here) (best 2 period)

Toombs versus Jav.Lane (big back lovers)

Goodson versus Gray (newbies)

Seems not many here can compare cross generations.

Just read part 1 of the story on Darren Lewis and Greg Hill that is linked out front. Pretty wild how far Tank fell...and how huge he is today

Dante Hall Draft Pick 153.

so if were going by draft spot then i guess hall is better than Lewis who was taken at 161!

"Greatest _____ ever" is always a good sports debate because there's no wrong answer when you're comparing the best across generations.

Give me DARREN LEWIS in my years of watching Aggie football. My first time at Kyle as a kid was the game he broke the school rushing record.

I know he was just an All American TE for the Aggies, but Rod Bernstein had the best career as an Aggie running back in the pros with the San Diego Chargers.

It very well could have been Ken Hall had Bryant played him. Years later the Bear said that was one of his greatest coaching mistakes and regrets of all time.

I saw an interview with JDC where he said something like "the players today are so much bigger, stronger, and faster that you can't compare them" to when he played. That's not a knock on him, but I agree you can't compare different eras. In the last 40 years, my list would be:
1. Curtis Dickey (tu game in '79 was amazing for him - he ran inside a lot and had world class speed)
2. Darren Lewis
3. Bubba Bean (he was drafted higher than the two-time Heisman winner Archie Griffin)
