3 week almost in the books. Skoal has REALLY helped. Feb 2 weekend is going to be tough. It is Cowboy Mardi Gras in Bandera and WOW what a party that is every year. Technically IF I am only doing 1 month, I can start back up on the 2. However, I need to quit quit.

Gaining weight because I've been eating. Hopefully the Skoal will keep me from snacking.

Sorry.

It's OK to have regrets. And it's OK to let those regrets go. They don't change anything, going forward.

Whatever your situation is at the moment, I don't think booze is going to make it better.

I appreciate it.

Never been what I would call an alcoholic, definitely drank more than I should have, wasn't even tempted to drink as I've never been a drown my sorrows alcohol consumer. It sucks, don't know how localized it is yet. That'll be in 2 weeks, but chemo and radiation is in my future.

Kind of just posted to point out that any day can be an excuse to drink, but just because there's an excuse doesn't mean you have to.

You got this. Cancer seems to pick its victims at random sometimes. Known a few people that have smoked their entire life and never get cancer. Knew others that never smoked and got lung cancer.

Keep us updated on your progress and stay strong.

Fair point

My MiL has been fighting colon, lung, and liver cancer for 2 1/2 years. Never smoked once in her life and can probably count her alcoholic drinks on two hands.

As for Dryuary, like most, weekends are hardest for me. There's nothing like piddling around the barn drinking beer and jammin' to the radio. Especially since it's warmed up a little.

But I gotta admit that I sure am a helluva lot more productive sober. With all that's constantly on my to-do list, that's not a bad thing.

Welp, couldn't quite make it this year. Wife brought home a couple prime NY strips and asked for wine. After working outside all day I couldn't resist! Slept like crap last night so will definitely be watching consumption from now on!

Similar story to bigfoot...

I was sick to start the month, traveled a week, and then my wife was sick. We were both feeling good again over the weekend, and she wanted a margarita. I just said "Yes Ma'am"...

It was worth it!

I'll add though that it's been nice to be fully sober for nearly a month. I wasn't trying to completely quit, but it was a good reset.

Hang in there everyone. Almost there!

Bandera Cowboy Mardi Gras this weekend.... Going to be tough sitting this one out. We'll see if I can do it.

Three more (week)days…walk in the park. Wife and I thought about grabbing a beer yesterday afternoon with such nice weather, but decided we can make it another few days.

So far, so good. Saving a few dollars this month.

Surprised no weight loss came with it....maybe I need to drink More so I can lose weight when I don't drink anything.

"Dryuary" would technically mean months ending in "uary." You are stuck until March. Sorry, them's the rules.

With Lent beginning Valentines Day, I've considered just pushing the 2weeks and then waiting until Easter. If I keep up with the early morning workouts, I might actually be beach ready come May for the first time ever.

Lost my Dad on February 2, 2023. The thought has crossed my mind to have a few on Friday in remembrance of him.

He was an 82 year old, overweight, functioning alcoholic. When I got the autopsy report last year, it occurred to me that, at 42 years old, the opportunity to influence what my autopsy report says is before me.

I don't know if I'll never drink again, but I think I'm going to keep abstaining as long as I can.

Honest question, what's the point of going dry for a month only to go back to drinking on Feb 1?

Taking a break from alcohol can help you reset your relationship with drinking and make more mindful choices in the future. It can also show you that you don't need alcohol to have fun or cope with stress./gpt

Perfectly good question. I can see a few different reasons...

  • Not everyone wants to stop drinking altogether, but taking a break is sometimes desirable or warranted.
  • A short exercise in self discipline can often lead to more discipline in other areas of life.
  • Some folks like a reset after a gluttonous holiday season.
  • Maybe some folks start January 1 thinking they'll just take a short break and then by February 1 they decide to keep it going.
  • Just to accomplish a personal challenge.
  • ETA: Sometimes it feels like a lot in life is out of our control. Drinking is something that we are very much in control of and it's nice to have a reminder of that from time to time.

Thanks for the responses, I was genuinely curious. I'm not a big drinker at all so I was wanting to understand it.

All of these resonate with me. I'll add that it helps prove to myself that going a Friday night or Saturday night alcohol free is actually pretty do-able.

It's been a great experience for me, but I will have a drink Thursday night.

It's something I wanted to try as was having a few health a stress related events. Has shown me I can have a great time not drinking and that it's fantastic never having a hangover.

I have seen more non-alcoholic "bars" popping up as well, think even after Wednesday we are going to try one this weekend since it looks pretty neat.

I do see more people not drinking alcohol when they go out but I think a lot more people would try if non-alcoholic drinks cost less than alcoholic. I get it since the supply is less but may get more people on the ledge to try it

I'm joining this conversation a little late, but I agree with a lot of this conversation. My alcohol usage has been too high to be healthy for a while, and it was even worse over the holidays. I decided to do "Dry January" for the first time. The month is almost done, and it's actually been much easier than I thought it would be. I genuinely haven't missed it much...I miss a margarita when we eat Mexican food or a good beer when we go out for burgers, but those cravings pass. I feel better. My quality of sleep is much better and I have a lot more energy during the day. I'm definitely more productive. And, although I haven't stepped on a scale this month, my clothes are fitting better. It has been a very positive experience.

So much so that I'm probably going to keep going for a while longer. I don't plan on quitting for life, but I've got a good thing going right now. Drinking had becomes such a normal part of my life that I had kind of forgotten what life is like without it. I hope that whenever I decide to have a drink, I can avoid falling back into bad habits (staying up too late, eating too much, etc.).

I think I'll start doing this every year. It's been a great experience.

That is how I started almost 2 years ago. I've just enjoyed the roll I've been on health wise and productivity wise so much that I haven't seen a reason to go back to it.

I don't know if I'm done with it forever, but I know it doesn't really fit into the life I've created for myself right now.
