There is a great program call discover your power zones. I think it is 6-8 weeks with 3-4 rides a week

I only ride once or twice a week to supplement trail running. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to get a meaningful workout out of it.

Late to the thread and I'm sure it's probably been mentioned, but I often enjoy watching Aggie Sports but when we lose I'm typically pissed off that I wasted an hour or two "for nothing".

So using the YoutubeTV app on the Peloton (though any TV in the area would do), I started watching the games while riding and incorporating bits of the game into my ride -- for instance for Aggie Hoops I'll increase my cadence when we are on defense and set my resistance based on if we are ahead of behind.

Sounds dumb, but it sure as hell helps when the team takes a loss that you still got a really good workout in.

Not dumb at all. I do all kinds of random things with music. Breaks up the monotony.

After the Houston Half I decided to switch up my workouts and started the build your power zones program. First off, I've really enjoyed it.

But.....this morning I did my second ride with Christine. She is absolutely terrible. It's just 45 minutes of her bragging about various championships she's won in track riding.....I don't care.

It is funny how different people's tastes are with instructors. The team I am riding with for the PZPack challenges has a bunch of people gushing about how much they love Tunde and are glad she is a power zone instructor now. I finally took one of her classes last week when the opportunity came up in the challenge options, and it was terrible. I didn't like her playlist, her weird facial expressions to go with her dance moves, etc. Made the 45 minute class feel twice as long just wanting to get it over with.

I can kind of take or leave Christine, but my wife loves her. She has gotten better with her more recent classes not talking the entire time about her racing, but I am sure some of those program classes are pretty old, and yeah it was non-stop a few years ago.

If you haven't already, take some of Christian Vandevelde's Pro-cyclist rides before they get purged. He has some great rides with cues based on power zones.

Yeah, these classes are from early 2021.

I found my first class with her funny when she was already 10 minutes into talking about racing, then threw out a "I don't say this to brag" and immediately went back into talking about racing.

I will say I've strictly only done Wilpers classes up to this point. Seems he's releasing less since he started doing running and rowing. So doing this program has introduced me to other instructors that I like. I'll have to check out Christian Vandevelde's rides.

I do wish peloton would do more with the programs. I really like how this program is structured and advances week to week. Would be nice to have more cross training type programs. Day 1 is a power zone ride, day 2 is yoga, day 3 is a boot camp ride, day 4 is a weight training, etc. One week the weight training focuses on upper body next lower body, etc.

Have you tried any of the PZPack challenges? They are built like these training programs and are either 6 or 8 weeks long. They start easier and build each week. In the 8 week ones, week 4 is an easier week meant to allow you to recover. I like having the set "schedule" of classes to complete each week and motivation of having a team relying on me to get them done.

Sure you're aware, but just in case, he's back.

I did Matt Wilpers' 90 min PZE ride from 4/6 and he was in the studio with Matt doing it. Pretty cool class with the interaction with them (he was wearing a microphone), said he was coming back to instruct more classes in 2024. Not sure when with all the broadcasting events he has coming up, though.

Also, with some cameras you could see his screen and he was putting out a cool 260+ watts in our long zone 3 blocks.

He already did one I think a couple of days after that class with Matt. I haven't taken it yet. Too busy with the current challenge classes and outdoor rides for the MS150, but I plan to do it as soon as this challenge is over. I really like his classes. I remember one where he compared doing intervals as "digging holes for no good reason, then filling them back in".

For the long ride fans, looks like Wilpers is doing another 120 minute class 9am central on June 1.

And CVV is doing new classes in studio on June 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Gearing up for my next FTP test in next couple of days.

Anybody have any tips on how to pace myself?

Haven't quite figured this out.

Haven't quite figured this out.
Start with a goal. Do you think your FTP is up by 5%? 10%? Whatever it is, figure out what you need to average for the test to achieve it, then plan your ride around it. For example, if your FTP is currently 200w, and you think you are capable of 10% more, then you need to average 220/0.95 (231.5w) because your FTP is 95% of your average output from the test.

So now that you have your goal, find a way to achieve that and to give yourself room to exceed it at the end. For me, I like to start at or around the average from the ride that set my existing FTP and work up from there. So if my FTP is 200, my average to start at would be around 210 for the first 5 min of so. If I go up about 15w every 5 mins, that averages out to 232.5w. I try to stay at a higher but natural cadence for the first 12 mins or so, then allow my cadence to come down and the resistance to go up over the last 5-7 mins.

In the last 2-3 mins give it everything you can sustain. That is where you will have the chance to exceed your goal. If you get to the last 5 mins and just can't get to the last step in the goal pace, then sustain whatever you can hold on to and that will be a sign you haven't gained as much on your FTP as you hoped.

Just keep in mind that whatever time you spend below the average output from your previous test is dragging you below your current FTP, so try to avoid starting too low and digging a hole you have to overcome later in the test.

Anyone have a Row? My wife had tried it randomly in a mall a few months ago and had talked about it quite a bit since. It was 300 off on Prime Day so pooling a bunch of gift cards and wellness reimbursement I have from work I ordered it last night. I've never really rowed myself so I'm curious to see what kind of workout it is.

Rowing is a beast mode workout. It is super intense.

It was probably the thing I dreaded most, when I could afford CrossFit, showing up on the WOD.

My buddy Kev has one I'll ask him how the workouts are.

I get the idea Peloton instructors highly overrate how much their worth. They already make like 10x what a regular cycling instructor makes. Couple that with Peloton not doing as well as they were during the pandemic years and they have to be asking for too much.

Yeah.

I'd think the way to be ultra successful would be to use the Peloton platform to gain and keep a following then translate that to social media, endorsements, etc.

But not sure how much value they'd have to just go on their own.

Got a Peloton Row delivered a couple weeks ago and it's great. I've never been a rower and thought I knew what I would be doing, but the form assist showed me how bad I would have been doing it. The Row is so, so quiet, I could do a Row with headphones in the bedroom while someone was sleeping and it wouldn't wake them up. So far I've just been doing 10 and 15 minutes classes as I build up my form but it's an awesome workout and I'm on just about the lightest setting while I get my form into a good habit.

so this thread has obviously died.

Was wondering if most of the folks that posted on here either:

1.) stopped using the bike
2.) don't feel the need to discuss the classes anymore

Looking at the Peloton Buy/Sell/Trade site, it seems like half the folks are having trouble selling, unless they drop to the sub $500 zone.

I still use my bike, but dropped the sub. End up doing my own "rides" while watching TV.

Was just curious about what others were doing these days.

I sold my OG bike a while back, got a trainer that I didn't use, sole the trainer and got a Bike+ off FB for what I sold my first bike for. I ride it mainly as active recovery. Also picked up the Row which I love. The thing is amazing.

I've had my OG bike on Craigslist for a month now, sub $400 and only gotten one email. Nobody wants one anymore, it seems like.

To answer the other part of your question, my wife and I joined a local gym and don't use the peloton any more.

I use my bike about 1-2 times a week. I use the subscription for all kinds of other workouts (yoga, strength, stretch, Pilates, etc) about 5 days a week. They still add tons of classes, and I never have to do the same workout twice!

We still use both a bunch to supplement outdoor runs and rides. For example, last night I hopped on for a 30min Pace Targets recovery run on the Tread at 8:30p which I wouldn't have done otherwise.

Since setting up a dedicated workout room and accumulating weights, we've really gotten into doing a lot more strength, stretching and yoga classes on the app.

I really think Pace Targets was one of the last things Peloton needed to implement to round out their niche offerings because it improves training specificity.
