That's also assuming one user. I'm not sure the max users per account, but if you have say 4 people using the bike, that's ~10/month...robbery indeed

Welcome to the group! I want to add, the benefit of the membership goes beyond just the cycling classes. My husband and I have been able to add in strength training, stretching, yoga, outdoor running/walking classes, etc., which for us is so worth the $43/month. Our family was paying $100+ for the gym and 100+ for a yoga studio before getting the peloton. And I don't have to travel or work around class schedules anymore. I can even continue the classes when I'm traveling for work. It's been awesome!

Broke down. Ordered my peloton bike. Arrives next weekend. Apparently there are some simple programs you can do if/when I decide to stop paying the monthly fee. Otherwise, looking forward to riding.

Trust me, I begged forgiveness from my daughter for chaining her to the monthly fee that'll go on well after I'm dead.
No man, that is timeshares. With Peloton, you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

Exactly. Especially considering what some of the in person cycling studios charge.

You can't really compare the Peloton membership to what local studios charge and say it's a good value. For one, studios provide the bike, so there's an extra $2k, plus weights, overhead, etc. Peloton should be way cheaper than a studio.

Now trends change and treadmill workouts become popular. If you're solely doing studio workouts it's no added cost. If you have peloton now you're buying another $2k piece of equipment.

What if rowing becomes big, etc.

Don't get me wrong, we ordered a Peloton and are excited about it. Mainly just because of the flexibility to get back to consistent workouts with a newborn. But it's expensive. And you can justify it by comparing it to a gym membership, studios, etc., but those aren't really apples to apples comparisons.

I like to do it as a 'cost per ride'. Excluding warm ups/cool downs, and counting just 'workout days', my wife and I are down to ~13 dollars per ride if you include the cost of the bike, equipment, membership. This will continue to go down, since I am including the purchase price of the bike. These are the numbers after owning it for ~3 months.

I actually think it would be interesting to break that down further one day and see when you would hit a breakeven point. Obviously remote vs. in studio are completely different environments, but when would the investment of 2k +$40 monthly break-even with a studio type class that charges $30-$35/session? Lots of variables at play too, like how often you would actually use it.

Very interesting and hadn't really thought about it until your comment.

I mean, that is exactly how I define 'worth it' in my previous comment. As with anything, the more you use it the more it 'blows away' a normal studio cost.

The big thing outside of that, for me and my wife, was a workout program for home. Just for the days where we want a quick workout.

I did something similar with my road bike by doing $ / mile. That helped justify the cost of a custom.

Totally get that and agree. As a working mom of two who also travels for work, the convenience of peloton at home and on the road outweighed the gym/studios. I've been far more consistent with exercise because I can fit it into my schedule. (also, congrats on the new baby!)

Thing is that breakeven point will be different for everyone. I mean if all you do an all you will do is cycling classes than breakeven will be way different than my family.

My wife and I are members at Lifetime, it's about $220/month for both of us and that includes unlimited classes, including cycling. This is also the most expensive Lifetime tier as we're in Houston and the only option that's convenient to us. If we were in a suburb it'd be a decent amount cheaper. My wife will also be losing other classes she takes, but isn't too worried about it because she can make up for them with peloton available replacements and the vast majority of her classes are cycling.

Then there is me. I'm training for an Ironman so have to have a pool. That was included in my Lifetime membership, obviously. We joined a new local swim club so I have a pool now, but there's an additional monthly expense to add onto the Peloton membership and bike.

So we're going from $220/month to $120/month plus the cost of the bike.

And I'm losing the weight room part of the gym and making do with what I have at the house, having a treadmill if I wanted or needed one, the hot tub and sauna/steam room that I used weekly, etc.

Again, we don't regret our decision. But in no part of our decision making process was because it's cheaper or a better value. It was simply because it's more convenient.

Had an acquaintance who wanted to lighten his bicycle by like 8 oz for $5-600 customization... his wife told him - "why don't you just lose a LB of weight for free?"

Its not cheap but I love the fact I can do anything I want there in the house. That's why I bought it so it makes me happy.

Always nice to get a high five from Wilpers when you are recovering from Zone 4.

That was about 2 mins into a 3 min recovery. My max is only about 165 these days, and I am at around 138-142 in Z4. It was probably 115 before I saw his high five.

hopped on the bike today for a 45 minute pz ride and im getting a rubbing sound from the belt...i looked and there's defiitely one spot with some additional wear on it. im wondering if maybe some sweat/dirt got in there and just dried up?

doesnt impact the ride at all, but definitely something i'm keeping an eye on

anyone tried to get a bike repaired during covid?

Update: checked the peloton website and they had me email a video of the bike with the sound to them. Less than a couple of hours later I got an email saying it was a bearing issue and got someone scheduled to come out and fix it on Saturday.

Pretty impressed by how responsive they were.

Looks like Peloton has finally adjusted the scenic routes. They make it seem pretty interactive. I am looking forward to what it might be. Unless I misunderstood something, it makes it seem like routes will progress at the speed you are riding. I hope that is the case.

Honestly that was the biggest negative when I was watching reviews compared to other bikes. Scenic routes are a slow drone over random landscapes.

Question for scenic/free rides, can I create a ride? For example my workout today is 5 mile warmup, then 10 miles alternating between zone 3 and 5, then 5 mile cool down. Can I set it up so peloton shows me the intervals or even adjusts resistance on the bike+?

Not sure exactly what it entails, but based on the screenshots, it looks like a major upgrade.

You can see metrics in the "Just Ride" function, can't you? Then you could adjust between 3 and 5 how you see fit?

I figured that's what I'd do in worst case scenario. But was hoping I could preprogram something. Haven't gotten the bike yet so can't play around with it to know
tysker

Pretty sure you cant pre-program but you can manage yourself. Also I think the longest scenic ride is 60-mins. Not to be presumptuous, but riders like me would probably need to use the Just Ride option to complete that length of workout.

Did Becs live 45min progression run this morning and she had us up the speed every 1/2 mile 4 times them every mile after that. I liked this style much better because I was in charge of my speed, but was still able to follow the workout structure.

It's really only useful as a measure of "how hard did I ride?" and only if your max HR setting is accurate. It can also be used to compare two people doing the same ride and figuring out who was working harder.

Can anyone recommend a HR monitor that is better than the one that Peloton bundles with the bike? I don't use one and just check on my apple watch when I am curious but my wife uses it and likes to see the HR display on the screen. She says she keeps having connectivity issues with the HR monitor that came with it.

I have a garmin watch as well and I feel like it's pretty accurate. Wouldn't mind looking into a chest strap as well. Can both display to the bike or just the strap?

Look back a page or two in this thread. You can pair the Apple Watch with the Peloton.
