Thanks Matt Wilpers

I might need to reconsider liking you as much as I lead on.

Went to buy a new bike in late June and was told 8-11 weeks. Bought a used Gen2 bike off of Craigslist for $1500. Got lucky and saw it right when it went up. Came with a mat. I'm about 10 rides in. Using a
Garmin ant+ HR monitor, some older Sidi shoes that I put new cleats on. I have been trying an old ISM saddle but not feeling it so going to swap to a Serfas comfort saddle and see how I like that (open to other saddle suggestions).

Read the whole thread. I did ride outdoors 10+ years ago but never had a power meter. Very excited to learn my zones and improve my output. Ran thru about 3-4 beginner rides, 3-4 advanced beginner rides and have done some music themed rides with Matt.

Excited to get into Discovering my Power Zones soon. Also excited to do some fundamentals to improve pedal stroke.

Bailed on the FTP test tonight. Wife made bacon and eggs for dinner. Big mistake to even try.

Got shingles in my eye last week/this week and it's totally kicked my ass. Had to give up On the power zone challenge I was doing. Gonna try and hop back on today for at least a 10-15 minute ride to see how I hold up.

Don't be so hateful to start out...

Should do an FTP test to start out...then week 2 can be the 5 hour mountain climb ride.

I have been able to increase my ride time in short order which is encouraging. The only thing I am struggling with is keeping up with the cadence that is being called out when I get myself out of the saddle on a higher resistance on some of the climbs. Hopefully that will change over time as I get more into this thing. Loving it so far.

Also as a side note, did a ride with Robin the other day, and I am discovering my performance thus far has increased when the instructor is easy on the eyes

Some of them are just totally unrealistic about high standing cadences, and quite frankly it is not a skill you will need or use when riding outside. Different people are built differently and for most people, a standing cadence over about 75 is just not sustainable for more than about 20-30 secs for most people. Doing standing work with poor form is a great way to injure yourself, so when teaching spinning classes, I always encourage people to do standing work at a cadence they can sustain without losing their form. When I am in a class and they are asking for a standing cadence over 80 at some ridiculous resistance level, I either sit down and do the same cadence seated, or I just stand and do the work at the cadence I can sustain with good form.

I almost always disregard whatever they say out of the saddle. I personally don't like going above 80, but prefer to keep it in the 70's. People might disagree, but I think anything about 80-85 out of the saddle is dangerous.

This..

Never ever sacrifice form for anything, not cadence, in or out of the saddle, high resistance, etc.

As a side note along these lines, when I first start I thought my best riding was at a low cadence. However, the more experience I got, and the more I worked on my form, the higher my cadence went naturally. Now, I have to make a conscious effort to work at lower cadences, as I find it difficult to keep my zones stable (+/- 15 kj).

this. and i usually choose the sit down option.

Olivia does a ton of 80+ cadence out of the saddle, which I think works well biomechanically for her since she's shorter. I've pulled my resistance back lately to try and hit the cadence marks in the saddle more and I've found it really helpful, but generally don't go higher than the mid-70s our of the saddle.

My completely unscientific opinion is that higher standing cadence is easier for people who are very light overall or who have relatively skinny legs relative to their raw strength. Something about redirecting rotating mass, physics, something something The people I have seen who can easily do fast cadence (85+) standing are always built like Olivia. We had a girl who used to work at our gym who would come to the spinning classes and she was strong and in good shape, but her legs were very skinny and we jokingly called her the chipmunk on crack. She could easily hold a standing cadence of 90+.

I think it's tied more to leg length, because the pedal circle is the same circumference regardless, requiring more knee travel for longer legs. But then again I don't know what I'm talking about.

I did Kendall Toole's 30 Minute Metal Ride yesterday (from 6.10.2020).

Does she usually spend well over half the class outside of the saddle? Because damn. And this wasn't 60-70 rpm, it was 85-90 and at a pretty hefty resistance.

Also, are y'all doing the Pelothon? Seems like an interesting way to get folks to try new folks off the bike.

I am not. Unfortunately, we are in week 7 of the powerzonepack challenge and have 4 rides already set for each week and another that has to be a powerzone class of our choice.

Indeed

I am on the Breakthroughcrew as well...it is challenging trying to do this in addition to the PZ challenge. There are a lot of activities/ groups that can be found to keep the motivation going. Peloton has really done a good job. I could do without the social justice warrior type stuff, but it's not overbearing.

#LegendsofFun here
I usually just do Tread classes with Becs or Wilpers but joined in the fun. I just took a Erik Jager bike class and really enjoyed him. Pretty sure he said it was his first English ride and he had a pretty good sense of humor.

Page 12 of this thread has some, but probably needs updating.

Someone needs to make a #TexAgs hashtag or whatever you call it.

Edit: appears there is one.
