Nutrition shakes?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm looking for a healthy shake to use as a meal replacement in the evenings. Something I can drink after my evening workouts. Anyone have a recommendation?

After a quick glance at "shakeology" online, at $130 for a month supply seems like a rip-off.

Is an off the shelf protein shake my best bet? Those seem to always have a lot of sugar...

I'm never really hungry after a long run, and it's usually too late to eat a meal. Sometimes a end up snacking, and a lot of times it ends up being an unhealthy snack.

Any advice on this??? TIA

Not sure how many calories you're wanting, but I would probably try to come up with a shake that is easy to make. Supplement with some protein off the shelf. You can find better quality stuff. I personally use Sun Warrior vegan protein - it is sweetened with Stevia. Throw in some power greens, fruit, almond butter, chia, milk, etc. Much cheaper than something like Shakeology.

Look up online some recipes to make your own. There are lots out there.

I'm not gonna lie, I've had the Shakeology shakes and they are delicious. But they are pricey. However the costs on homemade ones can add up as well.

Eating healthy in general is expensive.

Folks on here like to blast Isagenix but I'm a fan of their shakes. A little cheaper than Shakeology at ~$90/month.

I just ordered 2 five pound bags of EAS protein from Sam's club. I mix that with various juices or solid foods (or drink by itself)depending on how I am using it for recovery.

10 lbs lasts a while and it was 68 bucks online. Don't know if that's a good deal or not.

I generally just have a whey and/or casein shake in the evenings along with some veggies on nights I work out, but I picked up some of the GNC total lean mix a few months back based on recommendations that I've been slowly working through. They are advertised as a meal replacement but aren't quite a "system" like Shakeology in that you probably couldn't live off of them alone.

If I'm only supplementing protein and skipping/delaying a meal, I'll usually mix with almond milk instead of water to add some more nutrients and make it more filling.

I usually do 2 scoops of chocolate whey protein in unsweetened almond milk or 1% cow milk.

Relatively low carb, but lots of protein and good stuff.

You can find the big bags of shakeology (month supply) on ebay for around $100 from different "coaches". Just write the seller to check on the expiration date. I've ordered one this way after trying out a sample pack. It's the best tasting I've been able to find, so I'm more likely to stick with it. Others that I tried just didn't do it for me taste-wise, with some actually making me nauseous, so it's worth a little more money to me.

I would get some protein powder, a banana, a tablespoon of PB, a cup of almond milk and go with that. You can add kale or whatever fruit you want as well.

Not approved by the FDA? Oh no!

Have you ever looked at what IS approved? Once you see that list you won't really care what is not approved.

That's pretty darn cheap. And EAS is still good stuff even though Bill Phillips doesn't own it anymore. The Myoplex ready-to-drinks taste good to me as well and I have gotten some at Sam's recently.

OP, how many calories are you looking to get out of it? I make my shakes with oats, whey, blueberries, peanut butter, and egg whites.

I also make my own PB with my vitamix.

That's a good question. I guess I should probably try to shoot for a general number, but honestly I'm not sure. I guess I'm trying to find something that will be somewhat healthy and quick/easy to make after a nighttime run (to avoid snacking and hour before bed)

Thanks for the feedback. I have made my own shakes using PB, Greek yogurt, skim milk, some frozen fruit, etc. Sometimes I wonder how "healthy" it is to do this though...

Is unsweetened almond milk the way to go? And I've never tried Kale. What am I missing here?

Read the nutrients of each item. Make a recipe in MfP and see if it hits your macros.

I almost exclusively use almond milk and have for the past several years, though I use the original Silk which is 60 kcals per service versus the unsweetened which is like 40. I prefer it for everything except drinking straight, but I don't really drink milk anymore so we rarely buy cow juice.

Kale is terrible. Tastes terrible, looks terrible, smells terrible, is terrible. Some people like it. They are wrong.

I drink almond breeze unsweetened vanilla. 30 calories per cup. More calcium, vitamin d, and E than real milk. Less protein, but I'm making a shake with it.

I like the high protein version of SlimFast as a meal replacement shake- it's pretty cheap and is easy to find at any grocery store.
