With the Scout you'd just run the engine for some time to charge the battery. If away from charging stations, you're using the engine for another 350 miles of range. Fill it up / bring extra gas if you need additional range - the engine will charge the battery when off-grid.
Doesn't change it still is at best a 500 mile vehicle. No different than a single tank of gas, but without any ability to tow, haul, or be driven off high travel corridors. It's the same limited range as any other EV.
Based on what Scout has made public, I expect you'll be able to fill the tank every 350 miles and be on your way like any other ICE vehicle. I've had my LX all over NM and CO and off road plenty. It barely has 200 miles of range. I think the Scout will do just fine.
What people aren't considering is the actual logistics of how you'd road trip one. There's a mode to run the generator all the time. Let's say you leave the house with a full charge and a full tank. And no trailer for this discussion. You're going to keep the battery topped up until the gas tank is empty. Roughly 350 miles we think. Then you're going to have 150 miles of range left on battery. OR . . . like most people on a road trip you're going to stop every 100-200 miles and keep refilling that tank and going to the bathroom. Indefinitely like an ICE? That's the impression I'm getting. You could drive this pretty deep into the back country and still arrive at your campsite with a lot of gas. Then have a massive battery to power your campsite, or just do some very quiet off roading
In some cases you might be consuming power faster than the generator can keep up. Like maybe going 100mph across NM, or climbing a lot of mountain passes. But those are concerns with a regular ICE. you'll have to stop more often and you may want to run the generator while you go do gas station things for. But even this is an edge case. Most likely you'll have period of more moderate driving in between, and the generator will be able to stay on top of things just fine.
Towing is still a question mark until real specs on the range extender are released. The CEO recently said they want you to be able to tow how normally would, but I'm a little skeptical. I've talked to a couple of others at Scout and I don't think the "tow whatever I want as far as I want" use case is something they're really going after. But we're still a long way from production. And the tow rating isn't that high. If we end up with a generator that can do 90-100kW you may very well be able to tow with it just like any other half ton.
Pics also don't do the Scouts justice. They look incredible in person.
