2022 Trail Boss with the 5.3. 41k miles. Just dropped it off for the dealer to officially declare it. I took it to a friends shop first because the problem is only on cold start up. Thought it might be a dirty valve or something. He said nope, lifter is failing take it in for service.

Just made a post on the TB thread about how I haven't had any problems too. Excuse me while I have a stifffff drink tonight

Good news is you're still in the powertrain warranty.

I don't know why anyone would pick a 5.3 with AFM over the 2.7 Turbomax if they don't want a diesel.

I bought at the height of Covid buying (wifes car got totaled had to make quick decision) and 5.3's were all they had on the lot in my price range.

Was just talking to a buddy that had the same happen to his truck. Replaced the lifters on one side of the engine around 30k miles, then at about 50k they replaced the other side. Good times.

The 2.7 has AFM. Don't know if issues are as widespread as with the 5.3 or 6.2, but there complaints online regarding the 2.7 AFM system.

That sucks.

Can I ask what your oil change intervals were or if you used any "disable" apps like carbyte or Range?

Question about AFM. My 23 F150 had the 3.5 engine but also has auto-start stop delete. So no button.

Does it have AFM or active fuel management?

Neither. That is just auto start stop.

Good. I plan on keeping it. Have never owned a vehicle with the auto start- stop and I think it would drive me loco.

ETA I think 23 was the last year an f150 could be ordered with the auto start-stop delete. Just because of the then chip shortage.
Would be awesome if Trump would/ could do away with this nonsense through an executive order.
Or at least make it an option to choose as it was in 2023 models.

Are there any modern American truck manufacturers that don't have major problems with their engines or transmissions? Serious question.

We have an 18 and 19 Chevy 2500 Hd with the 6.0 gas engine and 6 speed transmission. No problems with the engine or transmission on either with the 18 at 173k miles.
Had planned on replacing the 18 with a new similar 2500hd and the 6.6 gas and 10 speed transmission but after hearing of transmission problems on the new " Allison " transmissions, I might just keep both.

The 2.7 does big it's largely been trouble free and produces similar if not better performance than the 5.3

I use the OLM for my oil changes. Once it gets to 10% I change it. Usually 6-7000 miles. Always Mobil1 0w-20.

Did not use a disabler but I am putting one on when I get the truck back.

This has been an issue for so long. How has GM gotten away with not fixing it yet?

1) Because it is cheaper to not fix it when they did a cost benefit analysis.

or

2) Too dumb to fix it and they are just waiting a whole new redesign.

All the manufacturers are having similar/related issues. It's frustrating, but it's one of the unintended consequences of the unrealistic CAFE standards they have to meet. (thanks Obama)

what s really stupid is they know the other side is going to fail also but they want just replace both sides when it happens. Buddy had his truck do the same thing. they fixed it under warranty and he traded it in for another brand when it came out of shop

going to try like hell to convince them to do both sides. I'm unsure which lifter it is.. maybe I'll get lucky and there will be one on each. If they only do the 1 side, I might be looking at trading since I only have 19k left on the powertrain.

What is just sickening is that the original 5.3L without AFM and VVT was a durable, reliable motor. A 300K mile motor if treated well.

This is why I got the diesel when I bought my 24 sierra. I had a lifter die on my 2008(!!!) Silverado and had figured GM still hadn't bothered engineering a system that works. Looks like I was right.

What is the cost of lifter repair?

Just recently traded a white ecoboost for an L84 GM vehicle. Now trying to determine if an extended powertrain warranty is worth it.

I keep up with services.

I so miss my '03 vortec powered Tahoe. It just worked.

Mine was under warranty when it happened. They say that for most motors with the issue that it'll happen before 50k miles. I do NOT like that they didn't replace BOTH the left and right side lifters when it happened. Ridiculous.
