I agree the exterior door handles are slightly less convenient than most other vehicles. I disagree about the screen and shifter. I like the look and extra useful space from getting rid of a bunch of rarely useful buttons and dials and a shifter.

Ever just tell it to park? My car has a shift stick, so can't comment on it. I haven't driven your model.

No need to shift to park in mine. Stop, take off your seatbelt and get out. It's off, it's in park, it's locked when I walk away.

In no world is that not superior to traditional vehicles.

No key is nice too.

I'd agree 100%. The S7 is one of the best looking sedans on the market. Probably my favorite. Unfortunately not a great choice for 30,000 miles year.

That's why I got a Tesla. Better performance, cheaper to drive.

But I know lots of people that don't like the looks of the A7/S7 or that it is a hatchback (something I like.)

Went from a Tundra, to an LX570 into a model Y Performance thinking my wife would like the Tesla. She took the LX.

No issues in 11 months other than a slight service window pita when I needed a new windshield. Acceleration is faster than you can imagine and enhanced autopilot or FSD saves the limp ankles. No issues with the touch screen stuff but I have stalks and use shortcuts and or voice controls for wipers, AC and the glovebox. Also has lots of cargo space with the frunk, rear hatch and under trunk, plus a spacious back seat

As far as charging, since Jan 1 I've spent $667 and as I took delivery on 12/23 the vast majority of the 15k miles were in that window. I have a 50 amp in the garage paying 13 cents per kw and 88% was charged at home. Superchargers are like 42 cents per kw and charge 300-500 drive miles per hour. Y and 3 has a 75 kw battery so a full charge from 0-100% would cost me $9.75 at home. Stayed range is over 300 miles but that's about as accurate as ice car gas mileage.

Tires are fine at 15k miles and I use the speed.

My wife has a 2024 Model 3 dual motor. I find the seats to be very uncomfortable, it is hard to keep cool in the summer, touchscreen everything is very annoying, no gauge cluster is annoying, no turn signal/wiper stick is annoying, no manual lock/unlock is annoying, regenerative braking is annoying, door handles are annoying AF, gas pedal is heavy and fatiguing, interior materials feel cheap, range is less than advertised, and road trips are a PITA. Acceleration is the only thing I like about the car. Fortunately it's a company car so we didn't have to pay for it.

I'd buy a Honda Accord instead or step up to a TLX which have been my 2 most recent work vehicles. Fortunately I get a car allowance so I can take my pick. I absolutely love my TLX

lol sounds like my wife. Hates driving with regen braking and the rough sport suspension.

I've never driven one, but have ridden in one. Couldn't wait to get out of it, most uncomfortable car I've ever been in.

Plus, to me, they just aren't good looking cars.

But seriously OP, I think if you don't like the attention that a Tesla brings you then I'd be looking at the Hyundai Ioniq. Great looking (IMO) car and doesn't have the same baggage that Tesla ownership brings.

Driving a Tesla Model 3 or Y really doesn't bring you much attention anymore. You may get some crap from your buddies for a while (I did and knew I would) But nobody actually cares or even really notices. They are literally everywhere now.

Problem is the lack of quick chargers. Ford has licensed Sueprchargers so you can use Tesla Supercharges in your Mustang or Lightning, but Hyundai has not. You will be able to find chargers that a Hyundai can use, but they will not be very fast to charge up. Probably closer to the 30-50 miles of charge per hour of charging than Tesla's 200mi in 15 minutes supercharger.

I assumed that OP would be charging at home since the original question was about city driving. He didn't mention trips.

But yeah, on any EV charging has to be considered. This is the Tesla secret sauce.

Yeah, 99% of my charging is at home, but there are times when I have to run some unexpected errands or something and having the ability to top it off in a few minutes in a wide variety of places is very much appreciated. Even if you don't plan to use it as a commuter, not being able to really drive farther than 100-150mi from your home is a real potential pain in the ass.

I've been in a Tesla once so my opinions are mostly irrelevant. However, not having analog buttons for anything is almost dangerous IMO. If it's all touchscreen then I don't want it simply because that is inferior to analog buttons and switches. You can get around some of that with voice control, obviously.

Also, and maybe this has since evolved, but my boss had some secondary battery die on his tesla which disabled his doors so he was unable to get into his damn car because of it. He had to have it towed and then fly home while leaving his car in Dallas. Not having mechanical backup for core functions is stupid. Especially the doors!

And Tesla could overcome a lot of complaints but simply adding a few buttons to the steering wheel and putting in a HUD.

And I have NO DESIRE to talk to my car.

Here's a video comparing the model 3 performance to an M3 competition. These guys are a little over the top trying to be funny, plus almost no one will take either 4000lb sedan to track drift sessions to annihilate their tires. However the point is that the Tesla is pretty much just as fast at less than half the price, and they've come a long way in a very short time.

Bought a Model Y Dual Motor a bit over two weeks ago. Driven almost 1100 miles during that time and LOVE IT! I'm self employed and work from home but visit clients regularly hence the miles. The self driving is incredible. Last weekend I did a charity bike ride in Wallis and the car drove nearly door to door from my house to the event. It's the smoothest car I've ever driven. No transmission means no shift points and it just rides smoothly. I charge at home, drive wherever I need to go today and charge at night when the day is over. That means I never leave home with 8 miles left and having to plan a stop on the way out the door. Yes that's a bad habit but it was still my habit and this car has eliminated it. I find the seats more comfortable than my wife's Cadillac SRX.

I haven't had it during a summer yet but the ability to cool it down before you leave wherever you are has been nice for the 90+ degree days we've had since we got it. No instrument cluster hasn't bothered me even a little bit. My last car had CarPlay and I really thought I'd miss that but I haven't. My in car entertainment is AM Radio and Spotify and both of those are built in with Spotify and the TuneIn Radio apps.

For those noting tire wear Bridgestone has a Turenza EV that's rated for 50k miles. Several years ago I had a Mini Cooper S with run flats and at that time tread wear ratings were 40k for those but they've improved and I'm confident we'll see similar improvements in EV tires.

What is the main cause of faster tire wear with EVs? Is it the heavier weight of the car or just going nuts with the acceleration?

yes, but from what I recall, the climate control is all in the touch screen. I test drove a Model 3 several years ago and the freaking wipers were like 3-menus deep on the touch screen. I never did figure out how to activate the wiper/wash system to clear some dirt off the windshield. I was in the back of a friends Model S and to adjust the AC vents, I had to swipe around a touch screen...that's just stupid and something that will break a lot faster than a simple manual vent. The freaking horn is a small touch button near your right hand instead of on the wheel near both hands or the center like almost every car ever made. Again, just dumb.

The ergonomics are just not there from when I test drove it and that's why I decided on something else.

I'll admit I'm picky about my cars and controls. My Ram1500 has the radio controls on the back side of the steering wheel, which is perfect. Except for some dumb reason, the left hand up/down/center button is UP to seek to the next station or DOWN to seek down to the next station but the center button will cycle thru your presets but UP only...no down. The UP/DOWN should be presets, not seek. No body uses seek anymore.

I've also yet to drive a car where the auto-wipers actually cycle at the correct speed, esp. under the variable intermittent condition.

The Ferrari 458 has some perfect steering wheel controls. No stalks at all, it's all integrated so you don't have to take your hands off the wheel and physical buttons.

And FTR, I'm not a Tesla hater at all. Some of the tech is very cool and innovative. Their ergonomics are just falling short IMO. Lots of manu. seem to be going away from the complete touch screen integration and returning to a more logical mix of physical buttons and touch screen.

Can't speak to the older models but my 3 has a wiper button on the steering wheel, one push for a wipe, or hold for spray and wipe. The climate is in the touch screen but is always displayed, with one touch to adjust temp, or one touch to open it to a larger display for more in depth adjustments. The horn is activated by mashing the center of the steering wheel as it should be.

I don't like the capacitive buttons on the steering wheel instead of real buttons but I don't miss the dozens of console buttons on traditional vehicles at all.

I bought a Model 3 Performance in June and just hit 7,650 miles this morning. It is a great car that looks good and has a ton of performance. When you factor in the cost, as that earlier YouTube video does, it is even better. I am a card carrying member of BMW CCA and would say that the Model 3 is the American 3 Series.

BLUF: American made 500hp sports sedan for $45,000 in 2024 dollars.

Pros:
  • The power. Everywhere. No turbo lag, no peaky powerband, no clunky transmission. You just hit the go pedal and accelerate at any speed.
  • Fuel delivered to my house 24/7.
  • Comfortable seats with good suspension makes for a smooth ride. Ventilated seats are amazing.
  • The buying experience with no salesman.
  • Phone as a key works very well.
  • One pedal driving. It is easy to just modulate the accelerator. Rarely use cruise control.
  • The size. Fits into parking spots easily. Able to carry two adults, a teenager, a dog and all of our stuff.
  • Tesla Supercharger is seamless and road trips are simple. The car lets me know if or when we need to charge. Just pull up to a charger and plug in. That's it. Does not have any of the reported negatives from other chargers. Stop at Bucees and the car is already done before we are. Bastrop Bucees charges at 235kW which is around 900 miles per hour. Future Teslas will charge even faster with higher voltage architecture.
  • Texas company and made in America, well California...

Cons:
  • Turn signals are bad. I am used to buttons after decades on motorcycles. The buttons on the Tesla are just bad. Needs a redesign.
  • The glass roof is hot. I bought a shade and it helps. Still, I don't use it as a driver. Passengers don't seem to care about it either. I would rather have a normal or carbon fiber roof.
