The gas isn't doing the rest though, it's charging the batteries as you're driving along. That's why the all electric range has to come down vs the regular one because space that would be battery becomes a gas motor and gas tank.

Picture an electric golf cart with a gas generator on the back. No axles, no transmission, the motor just charges the batteries when they get low.

After some reading last night, i think the 150 EV only range might be more accurate than I originally thought.

Ill be watching the Ramcharger real world performance closely.

Any thiughts on why gas powered generator vs. diesel?

Weight and packaging

DEF and big heavy exhaust systems on modern diesels are hard to cram in there

I guess I was thinking small 3 cyl tractor diesel. I guess anything on the road has to have all the DEF/emission garbage though.

I strongly suspect we'll see something out of the VAG parts bin.

Whatever it is will need to be powerful enough to match whatever kilowatts are required to push the car down the road at highways speeds. You'd like to be able to cruise on the highway with little to no drop in battery charge.

I would be surprised. But very intriguing. That would probably compete very well against the Ramcharger in terms of long range towing ability(albeit at much lower weights)

Have they truly solved the head gasket issues on they had in the Atlas?

My money would be a 2.0t variation

It seems like the EA888 or EA211 family would be the logical choice, but I'm curious about turbocharging and getting the required power (as compared, as mentioned, to the Pentastar V6 in the Ramcharger, which is NA).

If this were 10 years ago, the VR6 is the easy choice. Small package, plenty of power. Just not sure if that is a viable choice these days with the move to mostly 3- and 4-cylinder turbo engines in most of the VW vehicles.

BMW used a 2-cylinder motorcycle engine as a REX in the i3. Obviously a much smaller car with much lighter duty needs.

One of the video reviews I watch that focused on tell-tells based on the reveal mentioned a possible use of a gasoline VW 1 or 1.x liter engine from the EU. It would have to be certified for US EPA.

Edit- here is the video I referenced above:

We bought one, put 20k miles on it. Head gasket blew, fixed under warranty. Sold it for more than we paid. Thanks COVID.

My question is how will a turbocharged engine work in this situation? how do you get it to spin up to produce the power?

The computer would have to manage throttle and wastegate to maintain relatively stable boost levels to achieve the power required to spin generator at a constant RPM under load.

Seems unnecessarily complicated to me, but I am fascinated to see what they come up with.

I suspect they're way early in the development process for the RE, and that the decision to offer a REEV occurred recently. Production won't start until 2027 so they've got time.

I just keep looking at this thinking that's a BIG packaging challenge.

Interesting specs. Hybrid option with 500 miles of range, body on frame design, very similar looks to Rivian. Under $60k.

3 years away, however.
Not a hybrid, it includes a range extender which is just a gas generator onboard. More like the Chevy Volt or BMW i3

Maybe an NA 2.0 won't eat so much oil

Bonus!

Adding oil to a 2.0T VW motor is just a smart way to never have to do a full oil change. It's a feature.

which is also a big maintenance challenge. My wife used to drive a VW. it was a PITA to work on and too many specialty tools needed.

This is really my biggest concern with the overall concept.

oh don't worry I'm sure the engineers will think about that and make it as easy on the techs as possible . . .

Put in my reservation for the SUV... this thing looks sweet!

My Bronco will be approaching 100k miles by the time these come out so will be good timing to get a new toy

Placed a reservation last night. Slim odds we use it, but wife agreed it gives you something to curiously follow. Lie buying a random lottery ticket, it's more fun to day dream about winning if you have a $ in the game.

I wonder if you put a deposit down if these things could briefly spike like the Broncos did

I think the covid shortages had a lot to do with the Bronco spike.
