Anyone reserve one?

I think the Rivian R1S is one of the best looking cars on the road. That said, no way I'm paying $100k nor going with a manufacturer as new as Rivian.

So the price of the R2 is definitely more appealing. But I just don't think it'll have the appeal of the R1....

Do you want a Bronco or a Bronco Sport? If you say Bronco Sport I'll call you a liar. Apply the same logic here….

Disclaimer: I'm not an EV fanboy.

The other night, I got invited to a Mavs game. My friend has a new R1S in all black with the off-road tires and wheels. I must say it looks really nice - better than other Vivian's I've seen (and we saw 2 R1S's on the way there/back). I was really impressed with the smoothness of the ride, interior space, and all of the tech features: 1 motor per wheel, 4-wheel drive, auto park, 0-60 in 3 seconds, individual tire pressures, overhead view, etc. All the tech is available in other autos for sure, but the large screen in the middle of the dash complements the smaller screen in the "gauge cluster". He said his wife doesn't like to drive it because of all of the tech (she drives a 4Runner) and because of the size, so he's looking at the R2. Also, they won't use all 7 seats in the R1S.

They honored the $80k price he got at reservation time - otherwise their price increase would've pushed it to $110k. Too rich for my cheap-ass self. Gonna keep driving my older V8 truck tyvm.

I mean I'm not buying either. Cheaper to just drive what I have.

But I'd definitely want the bronco or in this case the r1s. However, I'm sure as hell not paying over $100k for it.

Im hoping they can pull off a better looking, smaller suv. But tend to agree with the bronco vs bronco sport comparison.

Website says coming 2026.

Not sure Rivian will still be around then.

If they are, though, and honor their $100 down payment commitments now $45k could be a damn good deal.

I reserved one. My thinking is exactly in line with yours - they look cool and I've heard good things, but I can't justify the price tag and I want to let them work out the kinks before I jump in. I reserved the first week so I think I'll have a decent place in line if they go roughly in order.

The worst that can happen is that I lose my $100 if they fold or I give them an interest free $100 loan for 2 years, neither of which concerns me.

I did a momentary double take at "overhead cam"

Ha, oops! I'll correct that.

I love the idea of the Rivian but considering the cost, the fact they are almost on life support, and after reading the real-world review of a guy trying to use one offroad in the wild....no thanks.

I have seen many Rivian's headed to the auction here in Austin.

There was no need to correct - it was accurate. Overhead cam, it has dual meaning but I quickly realized what you meant even though the overhead camera view still news newish to me (hey, I'm getting old). It was just funny to see "overhead cam" in the EV description.

My truck has a screen for it's instrument panel behind the steering wheel, and a large screen as the dash. It has an overhead camera view, as well as about 12 others. It has way more tech than I'll ever find useful.

It's a chevy.

Not directing this at anyone on this thread, but sometimes people assume the 'tech' is so much more advanced on an EV, because it's an EV...when it's just the type of tech nearly all new vehicles have. My mom calls me about her Tesla all the time, because she discovers something 'amazing' that her Tesla has, and cars have had for 10-15 years that she was unaware of.

I'm sure the R2 is great, but it seems you could also buy a Rav4, Sorrento, etc...save a crap ton of money and get pretty much all the same tech.

I somewhat agree and somewhat disagree. While some of those features are available from the established OEMs, they often feel like a bolt-on rather than tightly integrated into the vehicle. I think some companies are catching up, but it's noticeable to me. I think the newer companies like Tesla and Rivian have been able to do a lot of modern things faster because they aren't bogged down with all the legacy crap they have to haul around, but it will be interesting to see how they fare after they get more established.

It's also one thing to compare them in a $70k truck then automatically assume that comparison is the same in an entry level $30k small suv.

But, either way, it's not necessarily the tech of the r1 that makes it appealing.

I'm not sure I'm following. I didn't say anything about a $30k entry level SUV, I feel like you're inferring quite a bit that I didn't actually say.

I travel quite a bit for work so my rental experience with "legacy" car makers spanning lots of different makes, models, and trim levels. Think Toyota Corolla base trim all the way to Yukon Denali, though I haven't driven a lot of European vehicles so maybe those are different. My experience (which may be different than others) is that across all models and trim levels, a lot of OEMs are just now figuring out how to integrate these features into a complete experience. Do you disagree with that or am I misinterpreting?

Wasn't inferring anything from your post. I was more piggy backing on your post in regards to the post you were replying to.
