Thinking of getting an EV. Selling my GMC 2500 HD, no longer need to pull a travel trailer and ready for a comfortable commuter car/SUV.

New or used, Tesla vs field. Prefer comfort and technology over speed. I've never owned an EV so I'll have to get the charging setup.

Anyone ever bought an EV and regretted it? Again, I'll mostly commute 200-250 miles per week. Wife has a V8 SUV for road trips.

I had a Model S for 100k miles and loved it. Just swapped it out for a convertible vette for track & fun. Having an ICE vehicle for long road trips is a huge bonus but the electric is great for day to day.

If you're serious on EV stick with Tesla. Until the others settle on a charging platform (plug, AND DC pack voltage) you will probably find it hard to rapid charge at 3rd party chargers. Rapid charge is DC and the shore system must match your cars systems, otherwise it reverts to AC and does the conversion to DC inside the car and is SLOW.

That's my understanding...

This fella, with all of his dry mid-Western charm does as good job of explaining the charging situation.

I have had a Rivian R1T for the last 18 months. Drive 50 miles round trip to office each day. Had a couple hiccups with truck as rivian is new company but not looking back on an EV. Infrastructure is not all there yet for travel charging but as long as you have your home charger you should not worry. I was worried about range anxiety before I got it but you just have to plan. Most platforms are going to the Tesla plug which will open long range charging up for reliability.

Any chance your 2500 is a long bed?

I'll echo Tesla here obviously. Model Y Long Range sounds like it would be perfect for what you are describing. If and when you get serious hit me up so I can give you my referral code

Thanks. What does a referral code get me? Are prices going to continue to drop in 2024? Eyeing the model X actually. Probably real interest Q1 2024.

Referral code will get you $250 off, 6 months of free super charging, and 3 months of FSD.

If Teslag doesn't work out, let me know and I can send you my referral code. Would love to get the acceleration boost with the referral!

Edit: that's the current referral. Tesla could change it at any point. But they'll be pushing to sell a lot in Q4 so I doubt it'll change unless it's for the better.

I've had my Model 3 for 3y and 50k miles. Eventually the other cars will switch to the Tesla charging platform, but until they do, you are stuck if you want the ultra-fast charging. You can't currently charge something else at a Tesla Supercharger and the level 3 chargers that work on other cars are few and far between.

I also have 27k miles on a plug in hybrid. No complaints at all there.

For EVs, Tesla is the clear winner just from the charging standpoint. You can charge a Tesla at any Tesla place, and at any other place.

I do have the full self driving and unless you buy a car with it already, it is not worth it. I think the autopilot probably is for many people.

Happy to answer any other questions.

Maybe a bit different perspective as I am ~3 weeks into owning my first EV (non-Tesla). We also have an ICE family hauler. My commute is ~8miles each way to work, plus meetings around town. So far, as a DD / commute vehicle, it is REALLY nice versus an ICE. Obviously, very quiet, instant torque and speed, super easy, no maintenance worries, etc. I charge at home only one or two days a week and the install of the 220 outlet was easy with an electrician (~$400).

I think over time, I will miss the exhaust sound of an ICE (coming from lots of fun sports cars in the past). I'm not sure how the charging network will effect me given I'll probably be charging at home 99% of the time, but assume it will be okay.

Lastly, I'm traditionally not a lease guy, but given the sharp depreciation of EV's (particularly on the higher end), you should consider it.

That's good perspective, thank you. My commute is roughly 20 miles out and 20 back 4 days per week. I will do my charging at home most of the time and we will use our gas powered SUV for travel. We also have charging stations at my office but I don't know if they stay full or not.

My main desire for a vehicle is comfort and to be able to commute without needing to charge every night so a modest range. I have back issues that creep up from time to time so I want good seats with adjustment options for support. Usually this means something that sits up a bit higher so an electric SUV or Truck is most likely.

If a vehicle has a sharp depreciation curve, you likely aren't saving anything in a lease. It'd be reflected in the residual value.

Get a used smaller SUV? Maybe something with a 4-cil that will get good gas mileage? RAV4 or something similar?

OP: I'm considering an $80k suv with 0-60 in 3.8 seconds
TexAgs: have you thought of getting a used crv?

If you have a short commute but also want to take longer trips without range anxiety, then a PHEV is the best of both worlds.

I've been in one and it's a great car. Lots of storage and feels great in the road. I have a couple issues with the car.

- it's more expensive than a Model Y in every way (unless you can talk the dealer down or get better financing so don't hold me to it completely).

- charging network NACS vs CCS (for now)

- it feels like an ICE car with a battery. It doesn't have the same EV feel that a Tesla does.

- the infotainment system lacks compared to a Tesla. From navigation, moving throughout the screens, and the response time is way worse compared to the Tesla.

But others may disagree with all my points.

I like the Mercedes EQS. Price is steep but used takes some of the sting out. Looking at teslas still but quality looks like an issue they need to address. Also see a lot of complaints about long wait times for repairs. To be fair that is probably the same for all EVs.

I have a Lightning as my daily. I drive 60-70k per year. 30k of that will be in the lightning. The rest is usually the Gas F150 for long distance.

No regrets. I have a level 2 EVSE at the house.

He specifically said he wants an EV. A diesel Tahoe checks none of his boxes, especially with his wife already having an ICE suv.

He is thinking about getting a luxury SUV. Used EV/Tesla regrets are manifold.

Diesel Tahoe? C'mon, get serious.

And even if Elon picks up the tab on a new battery under warranty, there's no guarantee that the flunky at the service center won't connect red to black and turn your car into a time bomb.

Going from riding up high in the 3/4 ton to a sedan with your butt on the pavement will be quite the transition. Get whatever ev sits up highest.

Please leave this garbage to F16. The guy wants an EV, not another ICE SUV his wife already has. Just let people get what they want.

Looking new or used? If used I'd go Tesla and try to buy from them. I bought my model S when it was 4 years old. No significant problems and they came on site to do one fix related to the screen. Only got rid of it because I have a family of 5 and it isn't comfortable for that many people.
