Wife has 63k miles on her expedition and it's starting to act up. Took it to my mechanic and it needs a transmission and it's gonna run me $7k.
Of course the warranty ran out at 60k miles and it's got me and the wife pretty upset since all she does is run the kids around to there activities.
My dodge truck has 188k miles on it and I ride it pretty good for work and fun.
But transmissions last not even 65k is trash. And of course when I look up online Ford expeditions have a class action suit against them for their transmission issues.

I guess my question is do I go ahead and get it fixed? Do I try and trade it in before if goes out completely?
Or do I have Ford look at it and try and see if they will do something?
Or try and see if I can get a extended warranty to cover the issue somehow?

Where did you buy? Dealer not willing to advocate for you with Ford?

That sucks.

Buyers aren't in a good position to be trading around because the prices of vehicles have gone bat **** crazy.

You are likely better off getting it fixed.

7k for a transmission beats the hell outta 97k for a new suv of comparable size and equipment.

Seriously. In the quest to achieve 800 miles per gallon.

Tree-huggers waiting for the 20 speed 'cause, you know, the environment.

That sucks. I would go talk to your salesman/service guy and see if they can help convince Ford to help out. It's worth a shot.

Good friend just finished getting his replaced. They bought the expedition new and it has only been used for kid hauling. Under 100k miles, but out of warranty. Took it to multiple shops with the same prognosis. Can't wait to replace the one in my wife's Navigator. Any rec's on service or certain fluids for these things @1AG's? I've heard people complain about it being the shift logic, but that's hard to believe

The mechanic I took it to is the same mechanic that has been working on my vehicles in my family for 25 yrs. Good dude and I trust.
Basically when u take off it gets stuck for a second and then shifts hard to next gear. It's.on the knob u turn and when turn that it doesn't always move smoothly either. At one pt this week it make a grinding sound as well my wife said.
Just hard to replace them get a warranty not as good as we got when we bought the vehicle and it may go out again. Very frustrating if we go the way of replacing it.
They have issues with their transmissions and they aren't willing to get them fixed it seems but still making them on the regular.
I hate the vehicle turning off when we stop.

Ford corporate will possibly (and likely) help you out unless things have changed. Have you taken it to a dealer yet? Even if they do not cover 100%, they have been known to cover a chunk of it.

However, if a shadetree mechanic has done work on it vs a dealer with that low of miles, I could see Ford giving you some pushback.

Our 21 expedition with 27k miles shifts suuuuuper hard in to drive and occasionally has. Award shift while driving. I'm pretty sure I need to take it in to the dealer because it isn't acting right at all.

Same as our 21. We have 40 on it now, but if it hasn't cratered by 50 I'm going to push the dealer hard for repairs

Someone I spoke with told me thwre was a recall on it but I dont see one on their site for my vin, but I do believe it is a known issue on these vehicles, so I think it should be handled by Ford. I'll be taking my wife's in soon.

If nothing else, I'll get it on record that these issues started well before warranty expired.

Ours started at 10 miles. We have them document at every oil change

Ours probably started around 10k, or at least that's when I realized it was a thing.

For some reason, I have been finding that all 10 R 80 transmissions are being under filled from the factory. Here's my theory. For those of us, that drive our trucks, long distances or commute every day in them, the fluid expands enough to where the level is acceptable for operation and we can drive them for 100K + miles without ever an issue with them . Although I strongly disagree with Ford's fluid change intervals. These vehicles should have their fluid changed and 60 K intervals for the transmission.

What happens for expeditions, as many expeditions spend their time doing family duty, drive carpool and errands and the trucks are driven 1 to 3 miles per day, in neighborhoods and idling for carpool, and never getting warm enough to expand fluid to a level that is acceptable for operation. Therefore, these trucks are run every day with low amounts of fluid

Funny how these 10-speed transmissions were a joint venture co-development effort with Government Motors (GM). Hell, I'll bet they have electrical problems now too.

After reading this thread and others on similar make/model, I would pay to change the fluid and filter before I spent 7k on a transmission.

Yes. Check and add just like the 6r80.

Buy an ove glove /burn sleeve and a pump with a hose or gooseneck fill tube.

Do it with engine and trans at operating temp.

Passenger side under the truck. 19mm wrench go remove the fill plug and remove the dipstick and you can add there.

Our 2020 has shifted hard into drive almost since they day we got it, but not consistently. No issues with shifting while driving, or not that my wife has told me. She drives 10mi round trip a day for work

I haven't really cared because we have the 8yr/100k mile warranty on it……also it's not my vehicle so it doesn't bother me

I just ordered a 2023 Expedition, should I be worried about this or has Ford addressed the issue?

It is a known issue and all the dealers have service advisories on it. https://knightlawgroup.com/ford-expedition-10speed-transmission-problems/

My 2020 did the same thing, thankfully under warranty. First time they reprogrammed it and it fixed it then the second time they had to pull the ****** and replace pressure plate. No problems since then.

2018 Expedition boost with 83,000ish on it. Rebuilt transmission in Dec 22 after trying fluid change to no prevail and 3 different shops opinions.

Get it back and two weeks later the cam phasers go out. I might be completely off base here but could the two be related? In other words could the cam phasers going on it be causing the transmission to not **** properly?
Picard

Nope. Two separate yet massive problems Ford has on these vehicles.

hunnfishnick

This is exactly what is going on with her vehicle.
We have it at the dealer now where we got it from and they are inspecting it. For some reason it takes 3 to 5 days to inspect it they said.
