We weren't able to get the insurance information from this accident since we were taken by ambulance to the hospital. The police took down the other person's insurance information. We tried calling the day after the accident to the police station to obtain the other person's insurance, but they said they couldn't give it to us until the report was finalized.

I think the point he's trying to make is that some of us are curious how both driver and passenger needed to be transported to the hospital and are pursuing a personal injury claim against a 21 year old who caused what appears to be little more than a fender bender

Yeah, that certainly does not look like an accident that should result in people needing to be transported via ambulance. If so, you should find something different than a Hyundai because they clearly not very safe if that type of accident results in substantial injuries.

Bc we had (and still have) pretty bad upper/lower back and neck pain that was never an issue till this accident. I also had huge bruises on my legs, once of which I still have as of now (picture below). And then I had a really BAD tongue laceration that had to be stitched up at the hospital bc it was so deep/wide and wouldn't stop bleeding. But none of this information has to do with this thread, so I'm going to stop posting about the accident and focus on what happened at the dealer.

What did your legs hit that caused the bruising?

I have no clue. I was sitting normally in the front passenger seat, so I imagine they would have hit like the front console ??? I don't really know

6 pages in...my two general takeaways.

Confirmed Keating dealerships are still not very trustworthy.

Hoping OP is learning a lot of life lessons along the way, and not just about car dealerships.

Hopefully the next takeaway of this thread is that the these dealerships will make things right :/

Ok, wife and I in truck doing 75 mph....roll over hill, lock up brakes, then hit from behind and smashed across four lanes of traffic by other vehicles that were in the same predicament of trying to stop, then hitting a concrete barricade and walked away. If memory serves me that is what happened (although I'm still hazy from that day years ago, maybe I should call the Texas Hammer).

Hindsight, maybe you guys should go purchase a Ram 1500 for your safety? It worked great for me and seems as though the other driver faired well in his Ram 1500 in your massive wreck? Is he still on life support?

Hahaha I'll let boyfriend know since the person in the RAM 1500 walked away without any injuries

I wonder if brown folks say SO so they don't 'misgender' someone. I can't think of any other reason for college students to be using that term so often, including in actual speech like in that tiktok video. So weird.

There is no doubt about that even for those of us that are seasoned car negotiators that don't put up with any BS from dealers.

With the limited inventory, they have become emboldened to expand their shadiness and even a Sewell dealer tried to pull similar crap on me recently. Unfortunately for him, I actually know the GM through a contact that does a very high volume of vehicles through them. I reached out directly to the GM and he called me back within 30 minutes with an apology and telling me he would do 10% off MSRP for my trouble (after the dealer tried telling me they were not doing any discounts off MSRP).

I showed up an hour later to close the deal and the dealer was pissed that I had gone above his head. Sorry, not sorry.

I regret reading this whole thread

This situation really sucks, and I hope you get compensated for your rental car.

I'm glad the board was able to confirm that Keating dealerships do, in fact, suck.

I have nothing else to add.

This. I t-boned a van that ran a red light at 35 mph and drove home when my wife came to get me.

What happens first: OP learns some life lessons or car dealerships stop their shady practices?

My Grandpa dropped out of school after 8th grade, drove his General Motors cars for 10+ years, built his own house on weekends and paid cash for everything.

He wouldn't even be able to comprehend what's going on here.

How has no one asked why the OP didn't just locate a car in the THREE WEEKS between the "total" of their old car at one of the THREE Hyundai dealers in the Austin area. Or Carmax, or online, or any of the dozens of used car dealers all over Austin to find a new vehicle? Or even look at other brands. Toyota, Honda, Kia.....
I'm also throughly confused why you'd be living in Austin (unless with family, for free) if you're attending grad school in CStat?

No. Technically you're a 1st gen college graduate
Reminds me of one of my soldiers who went to Texas A&M.
He told me he failed out after one semester because couldn't make it to class.
I assumed he lived off campus and had transportation challenges.
He told me - "No Sir, I lived in Puryear"

I'm sure FLATOUT will fix it if she or her boyfriend speaks with him to explain what happened. But at this point, the bad press is already there, so what incentive does he have?

And I normally wouldn't care about using student loans to pay for dumb chit. They're the ones that have to pay it back, but when these people with massive student loan debt have the morons in DC wanting to forgive their debt with tax dollars they take from me, I have an issue.

There is ALWAYS incentive to treat people right. The fact that we have FIVE PAGES of posts and no response from anyone at that dealer is about all I need to know about anyone associated with it. I am a business owner and 300 bucks is chump change. I wouldn't even argue it after seeing the situation. Just straight up refund and apology. While it probably isn't the case here, I've gotten repeat business from customers like this because I gave enough of a crap to make it right. Every screwup in my business is a chance for me to change how I do things and make it a little better for the next guy.
Outside of FLATOUT, do we know if anyone at the dealership even posts on TA? Or if they're even aware of the thread? If it has been brought to their attention, maybe they're keeping quiet until they are able to resolve things with the OP.

I have zero clue how any of this went down but I foresee a scumbag that saw someone coming a mile away and intentionally took advantage of them. The fact that "that's how far dealerships work" is used as some status quo and validation is a sad situation. It doesn't matter.
It's not validation, but the reality of the business. We always joke about ignorant college kids who think the world is perfect having a hard dose of reality when they get out. Well, this is what that is. It sucks for the OP, but this is a valuable life less she and her boyfriend are learning. I know this is TexAgs and nobody on here has ever been taken advantage of, and we all know it's bullchit. We all have and we have all learned from it. There is a lot of good advice to the OP as well in this thread that she and her boyfriend can apply in not only buying a new car, but many other things in life as well. Also, $300 is well worth getting out of the amount of add ons they were willing to pay for.

If I'm going the full Dave Ramsey route, I'd suggest forgoing the entire college education experience. That's a massive waste of money in many cases.
I'm getting to that point, but right now, I'm in the "go to a cheap commuter school and then get commissioned into the military" side of things. After your initial commitment, you'll come out with several companies looking to hire you. One of my best friends growing up did 12 years active duty in the navy as an officer, and when he left active duty for the reserves, he had multiple 6-figure offers from well known companies to choose from. My cousin's husband is leaving the Army in a few months after his 8 years as an officer, and is shooting for one of the big oil companies, which he'll probably land at.

There is not a lesson or education in life that doesn't cost you something. Big picture, $300 and a few days of being annoyed will probably, or hopefully, not lead to repeat mistakes.

Never said the dealership is the victim here. Did she escalate to the GM to try to have it made right? Nope. She came on here and started blasting them, and when she found out the GM was a poster on here, she started blasting him and making ignorant comments about him. That's the issue. She made it personal with someone who may not even know what happened.
I think you're being a bit naive if you don't think the GM of the dealership doesn't know what's going on in his dealership. If he truly doesn't he probably shouldn't be the GM.

Coincidentally, my nephew has been trying to buy a Hyundai in Austin and had a shady dealer shakedown issue of his own, causing him to back out. Similar start of not having the car they agreed to on the lot when he gets there, but "oh wait, there's a different one at the body shop from being damaged while being unloaded off the delivery truck. Let's knock out that paperwork." Nephew naturally balks at first, has questions met with shaky answers that turn rude. My nephew is meek to a fault; no way was he confrontational. He was a mark with no experience that they knew they could pressure. I was proud to hear he walked away.

Unfortunately, I think the economic situation of the past few years has resulted an industry (which already had a shaky reputation) getting even worse when it comes to predatory tactics
This same bait and switch has happened to me several times in my car buying career but the results are not as bad as what happened to OP. Go into look at a vehicle advertised at "good price" only to be told "that vehicle just sold this morning but we have this one" I told one rather pushy salesman at a Pontiac dealership in SA no thanks and he replied that he didn't think I wanted to buy a car that day in the first place. I replied that I wanted to buy a car today but I didn't need to buy one today to put food on the family table but you my friend need to sell one today to do the same and told him adios. Another time the salesman summoned the sale manager to take over the deal. We start talking and the SM asks me how much I owe on my trade. I replied with how much do you owe on your house? He said what's that got to with it. I said precisely the point......give me the rock bottom price you'll take for yours and I'll do the same with my trade in.

These kinds of tactics have been prevalent in car dealerships for ages.

Agreed. Unfortunately I have heard/read enough horror stories about KAG and they own almost every dealership in town. We usually by from the Houston or Brenham dealerships but would be nice to have some locals that actually are known for their integrity. Buying a car shouldn't have to be a game of who can outsmart the other. Keep your word, offer a fair price and you'll have a life long customer. Banking and local hospitals used to be this way.
