My wife has a 2015 BMW X3 and one thing after another seems to be going wrong (a bunch of little things) and she's interested in the Lexus GX 450. Her current car has roughly 70,000 miles. I know this model Lexus is pretty dated but they did change the interior in 2022 and it looks quite a bit better.

Sewell Lexus in Dallas quoted us ~$60,000 for ordering one like she wants with about a 6 week lead time. Thoughts on this model car and price and lead time? I'd love a reliable car for a change. Does anybody know if this Lexus has run flat tires? I hate them.

GX460?

It is a plushy 4Runner with a V8. It'll feel a little behind the times on technology, but it will run forever if properly maintained.

It'll also get horrendous gas mileage.

The Lexus GX 460 (assuming a typo) is basically a leather-clad 4Runner with AWD and a V8. They're typically rock-solid!

Since it's a body-on-frame construction and truck-derived it carries a full-size spare.

Yea I meant the Lexus 460. I'd love to get the Lexus version of the Land Cruiser but dang.... $$$.

Pretty sure they don't have run flat tires.

We have a 2016 and have really enjoyed it. 70k+ miles and no issues that I can think of. It's sold internationally as Land Cruiser Prado, so it comes with LC reliability. I liken it to a swiss army knife. Does a lot pretty well, but isn't really great at anything. It's as comfortable on date night as it is exploring backcountry of Big Bend. New models remove biggest hesitancy for purchasing today because they add apple carplay and android auto, which really modernizes the infotainment. Best of luck with purchase.

Good to hear. We have two kids (9 & 4) and use my F-250 as our family car. It's super roomy and all the space in the bed is nice. My wife mostly uses her car to go buy groceries and pick the girls up from school, and the occasional date night. However it would be nice to take her car on weekend trips because it would be so much easier to park than my truck. We took my truck to Austin a few weeks ago and it was nearly impossible to park most places.

How much more roomy is a 460 compared to her X3? Or are they about the same? Her current car seems pretty small to me. I'm 6'2"

Is the 460 a 4Runner or a Land Cruiser Prado? Is there even a difference?

It definitely has more interior room than an x3. MIL has an x3, so pretty familiar with the size difference. We have two young kiddos and both of their car seats fit fine in the second row, and with the third row down we have plenty of room for stroller, pack n play, plus other random crap. You shouldn't have any issues hauling around 4 people with a decent amount of gear. However, the GX is not as efficient with interior room as a unibody SUV with similar exterior dimensions.

My understanding is the GX is more of a sibling to the LC Prado and a cousin to the 4runner. The GX is pretty much just a Prado with Lexus appointments (big grille + leather). Same platform as 4runner and very similar suspension (excluding optional air suspension in GX), so they share quite a bit, but not nearly as much as the Prado.

GX 460 has more than just AWD. It has genuine 4WD too., That is part of the reason for gas mileage. A V8 engine with genuine 4WD is much more than a leather clad 4Runner. We love ours ….. highly recommend.

u can never go wrong with a toyota product...I looked closely at an RCF in the last couple of weeks. wound up buying a beemer instead. the performance on the Beemer was far superior, but cost of ownership over time is waay in the lexus' favor...lexus and honda are bulletproof

Wife has the 460 and I'm your height. It is not comfortable for me to drive on trips. With the seat all the way back, the center console is just too close and definitely not enough leg room. It does not bother my wife however. And IMO the seats are not very comfortable. We usually take my crew cab Chevy pickup on longer trips. Much more leg room front and back and it has internet service thru Onstar.

Our 460 is a 2016 and has not had any problems other than door lock actuator.

We gave our 16-year-old daughter my wife's 2014 GX with over 140K miles. Still runs great. Being 8-years-old at this point, the suspension is a little rough, but Lexus/Toyota SUVs are legitimate off-road vehicles. Thing is built like a tank.If you're looking for a vehicle to keep for a long time, you won't be disappointed.

2014 is barely broken in! 8 years ago we were going to trade in our 2004 GX. My contact in the car business asked me why and I couldn't come up with a good reason. So here we are.

Are the added inches in height and rear leg room super noticeable compared to the RX350L?

They're the same width and the RX is longer but it seems like this could make a bit of difference.

It's a prado not a 4runner

It is going to drive much more truck like than her X3. We had one and ended up getting rid of it because of that. Other cons: The rear tailgate opening to the side was annoying at times. I found the interior to be cramped and forget travelling with luggage if the third row is up. Absolutely zero space behind third row.

It depends on what you need the vehicle for. It wasn't a good family hauler for us. But, other people seem to like them fine. Its not an SUV that I'd pay 60k for or special order. I'd wait for one of the big Lexus sales events.

GX getting a Tech package update in '22 models. If buying new worth the wait. Will have latest Lexus software, screen, etc.

RX is also a FWD crossover. The GX is a RWD body on frame. The proportions are completely different.

I haven't seen a 3-row RX yet, but the GX's 3rd row is really tiny - kids only. If you need to use the 3rd row full time I would look elsewhere at either a full size SUV or a legitimate 3-row CUV, about which there are dozens of threads on this board.

We had a 460 until someone hit it from behind and totaled it. We were happy with it overall.

If your wife is used to the size of the X3 I'm sure the 460 would work well. The one thing she will absolutely notice is that is is S L O W.

I'd look at the RX unless you are going to use it for actual 4x4 duties.

Really?
Still have the stupid 3rd row that folds up on the side?

Love my GX except for gas mileage and requiring premium.

3rd row will fold flat into the floor now. Haven't seen a detailed interior demo video yet though, it just got announced a couple weeks ago.

The third row of the rx is kids only too. Super cramped.

Get the RXL if you need the third row.

I was referring to the RXL and left off the letter. We have one.

Really nice car outside of the third row issue.

I have had both the rx and the gx. Unless you have infants/toddlers and a small wife, I'd go gx. You can drive both for 15 years so long as you take care of them inside and out. Great suvs..

Saw this and thought it could be decent upgrade to the GX. I too really want a GX for the luxury and the off-road capability but man they are popular

We have had 2 GX's and our third one is set to arrive at the end of the month. We have two kids and feel like they have plenty of room and power. Outside of the 17mpg, it's been an amazing low maintenance SUV.

I couldn't love this any more! Only problem is they're going to charge $125k+ for it
