Soccer moms dont want/need the performance, they want MPGs. 80+% of these are driven by housewives
According to fuelly, the 2019/20 expeds get ~15.75mpg (figured it would be higher with v6)? Seems that if they were really focused on mpg, they would get a minivan for half the price right?
But, but, but it's an ECOboost, these numbers can't be true!
Exactly. "Eco boost" is a clever branding strategy to save on…the cost to make V-8's, primarily (and V-6's in smaller vehicles). Valvetrains/cylinders etc. cost a lot more than little turbos.

Ford's not the only culprit, of course, but people who pay attention when buying a vehicle in this price/weight category should be able to make an informed decision, imho.

I'll take the 3.5 boost over the V8 every time. I test drove the Navigator the last year it had a V8 and it was a sluggish, disappointing pig. When they came out the next year with the 3.5 ecoboost, I bought one. It was a day-and-night improvement. I drove it 93k miles before some distracted ******* totaled it on BW8, then I went right out and basically bought the same vehicle again with the insurance proceeds partly because I liked the engine so much. Never had any mechanical problems with the engine in either of them. The V8 fans seems to be mainly motivated by a fear of potential mechanical failures with the turbos that I've yet to experience in about 130k combined miles of driving, plus the preference for the SOUND of the V8, of all unimportant things.

Well, yes, the 5.4 is a boat anchor relative the 3.5l ecoboost. The 5.0 is not. The 5.0 has never been offered in the expedition/navigator.

I've had mechanical engine problems with the eco boost as have many other people. They do make good power but the sound is important to many and it's not good. It doesn't fit a large vehicle well. Ford should have built a twin turbo 3.5L V8 if they wanted to avoid the anti V6 sentiment and keep the sound. They could have dropped the coyote from the F150 lineup to offset the cost of additional cylinders. The first company to figure this out is going to dominate the half ton market.

The 5.0L is a much better engine than the 5.4L. That being said it'll never make the low end torque of the boost. It will however make a lot more top end power once it's tuned to get rid of the crappy low redline F150 tune. Then if you boost it, that's a whole other story.

Exactly, I think the 5.4 was/is the last remnant of the old 4.6L 'modular' family. They always had poor low end torque as they had such long strokes and it didn't matter if it was in a Cobra, Crown Vic or a truck.

When people who can't help but describe a 'boost' V6 as superior to a 5.4L alternative, it's an illustration of the false choice they fell for at a Ford dealer, and lack of understanding as to how performance/low end torque compares in the actual market outside of that grueling technical test drive they gave two trucks...

I got to learn about the feature not long after posting that.

New driver missed a sign. Hadn't even put a full tank of gas through it.

That sucks. Was it totaled?

No order guide yet so can't say for sure but I don't see why they wouldn't be

Torque curve of the turbo v6 engines is much better than that of the bigger NA V8. That matters if the vehicle is heavy, 4wD, or you tow with it. Having good torque output at lower RPM ranges instead of having to Rev up makes a difference that is very noticeable.

It depends on the V8. I've driven my 2020 6.2L silverado back to back with a 2020 3.5L ecoboost F150. Both trucks were bone stock crew cab 4x4. The Ford had a 3.31 rear and my truck is 3.21. I'd give a slight nod to the ecoboost on low rpm torque but it's not much based on feel. The V8 definitely has better high rpm pull. That being said there's about a .2 second difference quarter mile in the Ford's favor. Now if we're talking coyote vs ecoboost then yeah, the low rpm torque isn't close. You have to have displacement on NA motors if you want to make torque like the small turbo motors.

I definitely agree that torque is extremely important on heavy vehicles. That's why I always recommend positive displacement superchargers on trucks instead of centris. This is another reason I prefer V8s. More room to grow.

Don't know yet. All 15 million airbags deployed.

I love the way my 3.5 boost sounds. I think the exhaust note has a decently throaty note and I love to hear the turbos spool. When I was a teenager I dreamed of driving a car that had that spooling sound. I think it's bad ass. I was just thinking about that today accelerating out of a turn and merging onto the highway. Sounded great. Don't know why people dog on it.

Looks like you were correct. Timberline in shorty only.
