Got the truck back. Started it up this morning. Same damn rattle. Sounds like a Volkswagen. What the hell....

I won't be straying to another manufacturer, but I'm pretty certain will be trading in my current truck at 99k before my warranty runs out and going to a different engine platform.

ETA: which is REALLY unfortunate because I really love the motor other than this one issue.

Dropped it off this morning. Supposed to be done Wednesday or Thursday.

Dropped my truck off this morning as well!

The rattle is so worse. I mean, ridiculously worse.

Guess I'll need to send it back in.

Just got the call that the truck is ready. Going to pick it up on my way home.

Any guesses how many miles it goes this time before the noise returns?

Was it fixed with old/same parts? If so, I'll say 9k miles.

With me it was 3.0

Well, crap. This thread has been discouraging, Finally took the wife's 2018 Expedition in to Tommie Vaughn today for the "diesel" clacking noise. They mentioned it was possibly some type of solenoid issue. Nothing about cam phasers, but they are supposed to call in the morning with the diagnosis.

Fingers crossed.

AND WE'RE BACK...... for round 3!!!!

Cam phaser/timing chain fix number 2 was done at roughly 70k miles. Well that round of parts lasted 35k miles, and the noise is back for the third time with 105k miles on the truck.

The last time my truck was in the dealer for the fix I found out that my extended warranty actually goes to 125k miles. So I'm going to try to wait until I hit 120k or so, and then take it in to get fixed one more time before my warranty runs out. Based on historical data, that should get me to about 150k or so before it returns, and at that point I'll just be looking to trade it in.

I'll update this thread when I get the actual fix done, but just wanted to let y'all know it's definitely back.

Just trade it in while still under warranty. Why play with fire?
Also if you buy another ford after all this, you deserve whatever you get.

Mine didn't make it 15,000 miles before the rattle returned. As they held it for 2 weeks before, I'm living with it.

Must be lucky. 120K and haven't had the issue.

Damnit guys. Mine was repaired at 25k miles. If this happens again the truck is going on sale. Going tundra next I suppose. Or v8 f150 versus ecoboost

Rather than start another thread on 3.5 Ecoboost cam phaser issues, I figured I'd add to this one.

Just saw on FordPass that Field Service Action FSA 21B10 was issued to my 2019 Lariat. This action is a reflash of the PCM to help eliminate the cold start rattle caused by the cam phasers. It was issued a few weeks ago and is effective for most trucks manufactured in Kansas and Dearborn from 2016 to 2020.

Here is a video from a Ford Truck Forum where a Ford Tech goes thru the FSA.

Sounds like Ford wants it done prior to August 2021. If done they will extend warranty coverage passed 60K.

Maybe 1ags or others can weigh in on how a reflash will eliminate the noise unless it changes oil pressure during start.

Quoting to read the thread. For some reason on my phone it was not visible.

Mine was reflashed two weeks ago during an oil change. Still sounds like garbage, but drives fine. 153K; glad its a work truck and not a personal.

The revised PCM strategy has something to do with the VCT control strategy.

Also this is supposed to quell a lot of the warm idle diesel knock certain 3.5L Ecoboosts have.

Also, if you're under warranty, and in Houston and you have the ecoboost rattle, I have a technician that I know at a Ford Dealer on the north side that is very competent.

Thanks 1ags. I don't like any dealerships here in SA and since my daughter lives in Katy, I may just take you up on that one day soon. Will let you know.

So, should we get this done if we have not had any issues?

My son is a tech at a major Ford dealer. He says the reflash extends the crank before spark duration to get oil circulating to the cams before the engine actually starts. His theory is this will reduce but not eliminate wear and will just push the problem out past the warranty period.

He's done several of these lately. He has a 2019 Raptor on the lift now with 40k miles, well the cab at least. The chassis is still on the ground. The repair requires separating the cab from the chassis!!

My 2013 Explorer sport has 135k trouble free miles on it. Love the car. These multiple repairs to the same truck points to something besides cam phasers. Maybe restrictions in oil passages or weak oil pump?

The reflash. Yes.

I received a notice about a brake master cylinder recall on my 2016 3.5L. Do I need to request the reflash when I go in or will they do it "automatically." Meaning am I going to have to argue with them about it?

This is why I bailed on my 2019 after the third cam phaser replacement by 21,000.

They should, but service writers are very busy and often should be reminded.

Update on the reflash (Field Service Action 21B10) for cam phaser rattle: A Ford dealership here in SA now tells me that Ford sent a memo to them stating they should no longer accomplish this reprogramming of the PCM. She could not tell me why. I'm assuming it was no help.

Edit to add: per a Ford Forum, the reflash caused transmission shifting issues so they decided to stop performing it.

Lol, putting on a bandaid to cover up one issue (instead of actually fixing it) caused a new issue to get uncovered. I love it.

Also, update on my truck's current situation. Im at almost 115k now, and still haven't taken it back in for its 3rd round of cam phaser bs yet. Was planning on waiting til 120k+, because my extended warranty runs out at 125k.

That being said, this little guy popped up yesterday. First time I've ever seen it, and I have owned this truck since brand new, so that's good I guess. Truck isn't having any other noticeable symptoms or issues, so not sure what it could be. I'll go have the code pulled later today and decide if I should take it in to the dealer sooner or later.

Maybe I'm lucky, but my 2015 3.5l boost has been flawless. I only use Mobil 1 with Ford or Wix filters and change at 5k miles.

Me too. My'13 had 190K flawless miles and my '19 has 42K with no problems.

I've only got 70k miles on mine. It was my daily driver, but since I got a company car, I might put 5k miles a year on it.

Tell the dealer the "Replace Engine" light came on

drummer0415

The dealer I bought it from has done every single oil change since brand new, so whatever products the dealer uses is what has been in my truck for every single oil change.

I don't track oil changes by mileage, I just wait til the oil change reminder pops up on the dash, and then I take it in. That's what they created that feature for isn't it?

Is it bad that I secretly hope I have some catastrophic failure that trashes the whole engine so that I can get a new one under warranty?

Bring it by sometime and I can scan it.

We still have to finish the maintenance I forgot...LOL
