Did some research on this clunky start up noise and it seems to be very common across the newer ecoboost vehicles that have the auto start/stop "technology".

Just bought a brand new 2019 Expedition for my wife and noticed a slight clunky noise when it first starts up. I permanently disabled the auto start/stop and it doesn't make this sound at all anymore. It takes all of 2 seconds to unplug the harness to do the trick. Just note that before you tow anything to plug it back it because it also controls your trailer's brake lights and blinkers.

Instructions in the YouTube video below.

Thanks! Going to give this a try and see if the clunk goes away.

I've had my auto start stop disabled via ForScan almost the entire life of the truck and got the cam phaser issue still.

The clunk noise on start and phaser rattle are 2 different issues. I had the phaser job done but still have the clunk. Hopefully disabling auto stop/start resolves that.

So disabled it like I had mentioned but only tested it via remote starts. Drove it today and when I hit the blinker it blinked at a really fast pace (very annoying). So I just plugged the harness back in and told my wife to make it a habit to push the button every time she gets in.

I'm guessing this is probably an issue with Expeditions, as well? I will be in the market for a 2020 Expedition next year and this worries me as my wife is dead set on one.

My 2018 work truck has been doing this rattle on startup for a long time but I have really thought much of it. I will check in with the service department next oil change.

I bought that aftermarket plug-in for the Autostop and now the truck starts up with the button already activated. Easy install.

Care to share more info or a video? I just don't like the auto start/stop and think its can't be good for your engine in the long haul. I think it's crap they won't let you permanently disable it in the settings.

If you're in houston, I can turn it off for you.

My truck is currently at Ford for this. Dropped it off December 20, then went out of town for a week, came back and still a week or so away. They gave me a loaner so the headache is negligible, but still annoying.

They diagnosed it at cam phasers, so we'll see if that fixes it.

1ags, still need to get out to you to disable the auto engine shut off, automatically fold in mirrors when locked, etc.

Dealership told me I'd have to drop it off for diagnosis and I couldn't expect them to get to it for two weeks. Wouldn't let me wait two weeks and then drop it off. Then I'd have to take it back while they ordered parts.

Finally said they would inspect the oil and oil filter to "make sure I've kept my end of the warranty agreement."

So you're having issues with a Ford product and are going to buy another Ford product hoping that one is better?

Interesting.....

Well considering I just got out of a Chevy that would have required an aftermarket TC to fix the POS 8 speed transmission it came with after exhausting all the TSB's and weeks at the dealer under warranty, I'm kind of running out of options.

Will have to consider the Tundra just wish they'd update the interior.
I have a tundra now after having issue after issue with my F150. Its an amazing feeling knowing my truck is in my driveway every morning and not at the dealer. Yes you trade off bells, whistles and pretty interiors for a no frills truck with a big V8 that just works. You could always try a RAM for the pretty interior and by the time it catches fire Toyo will have a new tundra out.

I just can't get over the pathetic payload capacity on a Tundra.

Just an update. The service department confirmed the clankety startup on the work truck. They narrowed it down to the cam phasers. Fortunately, the boss bought 100K warranty on it so the parts should be ordered soon.

The way it was explained to me is, over night the phasers loose oil pressure and after start up it takes a couple seconds to regain pressure. I don't know if it changes the cam position in that time or if it is just running unlubricated. I am curious if this really hurts the engine or if its just annoying and would run forever.

Got a voicemail while working out this morning that my truck is finally ready. 2 1/2 weeks in the shop. I think all they did was replace the cam phasers so we'll see if that actually fixes it long term.

Yea i switched to a 3/4 ton Chevy before that design was released. Unintentionally dodged a bullet there. I'd like to get a Tundra but i just can't get over the fact that they won't make a crew cab with a 6.5' bed.

Can you not order one? If not, the double cab Tundras have a LOT of room in the back. Adults can ride comfortably back there. It is nowhere near the Supercab Ford or Chevy.

Can't order crewmax with 6.5' bed. Extended cab isn't enough space for me personally.

Update on mine also. Took it into dealer on Jan 2nd for "diagnosis", got it back on Jan 3rd. It was the same write up/ parts list as last time. They were going to order parts and then I'll bring it back for the work to be done. Anticipate dropping it off one day this week.

Just got a call from service adviser at the stealership. The new parts needed for my truck are on backorder and have no estimated time on when they will be in stock. So that's cool.

They've had this issue since 2011. I traded my 2011 3.5 ecoboost for the same reasons. Bought a 2014 3.5 ecoboost because I read they fixed the issue. Didn't have a problem in the 2014 truck at all. Sucks that it's still going on.

I don't know what this means. Can you elaborate? And what would it accomplish? Help get the parts faster?

It opens a case with Ford Corporate and you will get a Zone rep involved.

After you call the 800#, you will get a case #.

Talk to your dealer, ask them to get a FCSD zone rep involved to get your parts.

Of course, your dealer should have already engaged the FCSD, but a lot of times they dont.

Wonder if they were going to change tensioners....

There is also a reflash that some raptor owners go that also solved the issue...

Timely bump to this thread as I have a small update also. Finally got the call from my service advisor that they got the replacement parts in. I am scheduled to drop it off Monday morning for repair.

It is February 6th and I had the issue diagnosed in January 2nd.
