I plan on using stock ECMs.

Don't begrudge the IG. As a concerned parent - for years I shadowed my daughter's account. By the time she was in a junior or senior in HS I had started following a bunch of fishing guides and she finally said 'Dad, I think it's time you get your own acct."

I'm glad she did. My CP90 feed is ' redfish, redfish, tarpon, rifles, bikini, Peterbilt show truck, tarpon, polling skiff, OCCASIONAL TEXAGS POSTER, 1911, bikini, crazy heavy equipment fail, tarpon...." and so it goes. The truck act is all C10 & hot rod stuff.

I don't know why they call it an LS swap, it's more like an 'Leverything' swap.

That's not exactly true. I'm only this far for want of a disc brake upgrade via an '85 front crossmember. Now I just need to score some v8 motor stands to replace my 6s. Then when the Dirty Dingo sliders come in hopefully I can get the engine position set and pull the cab off for painting the frame. I am going patina style, but I'm not going to get this far and not paint the frame. That way if I change my mind in a few years I can go back to square 2 instead of square 1.

Well. That escalated quickly.

Only one way to go from here. I'm going to give 2 guys a couple 4" grinders with wire wheels on Monday and tell them to get after it. Hopefully before the end of the week it'll be clean and I'll have it painted black so I start going back together.

Finally, even if just temporary, we put something TOGETHER. After shooting the frame black this week CPjr and I pulled out our donor engine and mocked it up in the frame. We did discover a few challenges along the way: the oil pan is cracked from the way it was shipped, we have 2 broken manifold bolts that will need extracting, can't get the engine mounts far enough into the stands to seat properly yet, and I still need to get a rear transmission mount (on way). Otherwise things look good enough to bring the cab back soon and check firewall clearance & finalize engine position.

I'm struggling with the front suspension a little. We intend to run 2" drop spindles to get a little lower than the factory ride height - but we also want to run 15" factory style steelies. Of course those style wheels weren't designed to accommodate disc brakes so things get tight, and dropping the spindles makes things worse. The common fix is grinding some of the lower control arm gutter away for clearance. I really hate to do that, but the alternative is going to an 18 or 20 inch wheel and that isn't what we wanted for this truck; so for now the fronts are in limbo while I research out what brand spindles are the best fit.

Dust not withstanding, the frame turned out nice. I believe I've said it on this board before - but it bears repeating for hobby projects - John Deere paints are a hidden jewel. The colors are very limited but the paints are excellent quality, durable, and reasonably priced. I treat them just like an acrylic enamel and go to the auto paint store to get the slowest acrylic enamel reducer I can and some hardener. This is the gloss black. There is a medium black that isn't as glossy, but stay away from blitz black - that's a soft black coating that is meant to protect plows from rust and then scour off when they go in the ground next season. Other than that it's green, yellow, & red.

I can't remember the company off the top of my head, but someone (in California I think) is making up to 17" steel wheels that look like factory. Might be an option. They weren't cheap, but not terrible either. I was considering them for my Chevelle for the same reason.

Love the JD paint tip. I like the Eastwood frame paint, but I think yours looks better.

I'm not sure of your motor mount design, but on RACETRUCK, there are little tabs in the mount pads that have to sit in a specific orientation for the engine side mounts to drop in around the tabs. Then after that, I gave her some persuasion with a dead blow.

For the broken manifold bolts, weld some nuts onto them and take them out.

Wheel Vintiques? That's where I'm shopping for wheels from because they make steelies and smoothies in a wide variety of sizes and widths. Detroit Steel Wheel, Mobsteel, make the big 20"+ steelies, but you have to really want that look or like the artillery wheels to go that route.

I think I've changed my mind again (put on your faux shocked face because it happens daily). I keep going back to a truck on IG that belongs to one of the boat captains from the Wicked Tuna reality show. He had a custom '68 C10 built that is in the *same* (loosely) style I'm looking for. These are 17x7s up front and 17x8 in the rear; smoothies, with bolt on clips that can be used to adapt the factory hubcaps (a self-imposed requirement).

I really like how the bigger wheels/tires fill out the wheel wells - which are emphasized because of the way the 67-68 trim follows their contour. Because they keep a factory look, fill the wheel wells, and might keep me from having to cut anything - this afternoon I'm leaning to 17s like this -

This is the model 62 wheel I wanted originally, but it's only available in 5x5 lug pattern. For the time being I was going to run 5x5 up front and the factory 6 lug in the rear until I get the 12 bolt all converted over from springs to truck arms. Holy hell, this is a lot of work just keeping all the stuff straight in my head!

This is the smoothie like the blue truck has on it.. 60 feet and 60 mph it would be hard to tell them apart. This wheel is available up to 8" width in almost any bolt pattern. If I run this wheel @ 17" I may be able to get the best of both worlds and not have to worry about hacking my control arms.

Now if I can keep from changing my mind again as I reach for my credit card.

Wheel Vintiques was it, just couldn't come up with the name.

My personal opinion is to go with the smoothie in 17", but I wouldn't invest that kind of money in them unless I get the same bolt pattern on all 4 corners. Hard to carry two spares...and rotating tires properly would be hard!

Your truck has leaf springs? I thought all the 67-72 had 4 point rears.

I think I get what your saying....you have a 12 bolt leaf donor for this truck? Makes sense now.
Centerpole90
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Yes. I have a donor sitting here - but putting it in is going to be a good bit of work and going to cost just a little less than swapping axles in my 10 bolt I'm running now (swapping the axles w/ 5x5 bolt pattern). More soul searching to do.
Centerpole90

I am going to check that. They were SBC mounts, the old style that are short & wide. I used the Energy Suspension mounts and they have a preload plate that goes behind them - WHICH has a dimple on it. I'm certain I got them facing the right way - but I will double check. I will admit I was a little preoccupied making sure my partner didn't get his hand squeezed - so it's possible I overlooked that.

I get it. I may get shamed by the 12 bolt fans, but that 10 bolt will most likely do what you need unless you plan to stick slicks on it for track runs or pull with it. Is the 10 bolt Posi?

I have a '67 C10 with a 12 bolt and 4-link, but it's not for sale....

I agree. This is all I want it to do. If it does it as a school bus rolls by then that's just a bonus.

ETA, I think that's a one legged wonder right there. I don't believe he has a posi either.

Yeah, that's no accomplishment with an open diff, but still looks cool. The good thing about one tire spinning is it doesn't go sideways and into an on-coming school bus.....

To add to it, if your diff is not Posi, you can pick up an OEM GM unit on eBay for not terrible money.... My '64 Chevelle had an open diff, but I ebayed a '67 camaro Posi for $180. Works like a charm. I did 4.11 Richmond gears and bearing kit too, so I have some coin in it, but not bad for getting two black marks.

I hate my open diff on my truck, it's impossible to put down 600 lb/ft of torque below 45 mph. That being said a truck with that much power and a posi really needs traction control, because they'll get sideways on you quicker and less predictably than a car.

Tempting, but I'm not interested in tires I have to replace every 2,500 miles, especially on my daily driver 4x4 truck. Maybe on the Mustang once my current motor goes boom and I get some forged internals and turn up the boost. I also like to go around corners though.

Auburn makes a nice aftermarket posi, but from what I've read, you're supposed to change the diff oil every 7,500 miles, which would be a pia on a daily driver. Might look into that for this build, although mileage may not be as much of a concern.

Caught a break this morning. A guy on 67-72 had figment issues with a Holley LS pan and his rack/pinion steering. He's switching pans and offered the other for sale - only been mocked up, no oil in it w/ pickup tube. $100 discount. I have dibs pending details.

CPjr's crew came by to help out this afternoon and we got all those pesky motor mounts to line up. I'm not sure if the driveline will work as is or not. We took the Saginaw 3 out and are replacing it with a 4L60e; it's going to be close - I'll have to get the cab on and finalize the engine position before I totally commit. I neglected to order the slip yoke for this transmission.

Pictured here are three Chapter FFA officers, a District FFA officer, NHS members, football players, basketball players, grade makers and good kids - I'll go to the mat for mine and either of the other two. This project is building a lot more than a pickup.

Summit Racing does not mess around. 3 days free shipping and Wheel Vintiques are sitting on the porch! As predicted I flipped again and ended up ordering 15's. That's what we wanted originally and I think I can make it work. The 17 smoothies would be cool but at $250/wheel it's just too much gamble - If I invest that much in wheels it's be some 20" Salt Flats.

10" Old School model 62s with the four windows. 1967 factory caps -

We made a little progress yesterday. Even though it doesn't exactly look like it; we aren't THAT far from being back on wheels and tires. I purchased the tires @ Discount (ordered, should be here Tues), the wheels are getting painted, our drop spindles should be in this week (hopefully) and it if rains like the forecast says that should be just enough time to swap the rear end. The grain harvest is about to kick off and that will stop progress for a while - so I'd really like to have this thing on it's wheels for that.

One of my projects was welding in some pass throughs so the exhaust could be tucked in the frame. This is a fairly common C-10 mod for this era and there are lots of kits & aftermarket cross members to accomplish it. I did it the old way and fabricated it myself.

That should do just fine!

Factory 706 heads for the lol olds... (Camaro manifolds fit like a champ)

It's more fun putting things together than taking them apart.

One of these days it will resemble this again, even if all the stuff that you CAN'T see in the picture (and a few things you can) will be TOTALLY different.

Using the 67-72 Trucks forum classifieds has turned up some goodies - tonight I bought the 514 red radio delete plate on the left. Because the TAC module and ECM will be on the firewall and eventually a Vintage Air unit I was thinking of doing a remote stereo install to make more room... like trying to go with no head unit; bluetooth only. Time will tell.

It was a real treat having both kids with me in the shop yesterday. We got a lot done, shared a lot of laughs, and discussed how tomorrow is going to be 11 Memorial Days without their Uncle Bubba. Our country has given a lot in the last 16 years and that is just a small fraction of the sacrifice we honor this weekend.

This Memorial Day, every Memorial Day, and in our little family, everyday; we remember. We miss you, Maj. Matthew Worrell '94

Small world ins't it? Even smaller when you build Fightin' Texas Aggie Bonfire! I appreciate the kind word and will pass it along to Mrs CP, his sister and only sibling.

I'll add that your class, '94, has been hit hard. Very hard. Mine and Matt's outfit, L-1, has given lot for its size. A few buddies and I were talking about this a while back at the time it seemed like '94 & '98 have given more than their share.
