Right now my budget is around $6-7k, and I'm not particularly picky on model. I like YJ because I think they are unique, CJ cause you don't see many on the road, and most TJ are out of my price range. I don't have a place to work on it myself so I'm looking for something that is mildly built ,roadworthy, not a rust bucket, and not beat to hell from trails.

Prefer a 6 cyl if at all possible, but not a deal breaker. Definitely manual.

MJ or J10 perhaps?

I actually do like the J10 (think Tremors truck) but I already have a pickup. Does the MJ sit on the XJ frame and suspension/axles?

The jeep would be more of a recreational vehicle

The MJa dn XJ don't have frames, they are unibody. I guess in the Commanche's case you could say is half and half. Their suspension set up is the same.

I bought a 97 daily driver tj with 130k with a 4.0 for 5k. Went from a one ton bronco on 40s to an open 30/44 tj. Having a blast

I too was looking for YJs as I wanted the simplicity of leafs, but couldn't pass up this TJ. 60/10.25 probably within the next year, but thus far, I am having a great time wheeling a basically stock tj on 35s. It looks pretty cookie cutter except for the high fenders, but goes places it shouldn't.

I found a YJ in Patteson, but the owner insulted me with the price. It would have been a good shell, nothing more and he still wanted 4 grand for it.

Going to ask one of my shop friends if anybody has mentioned wanting to sell one of their toys.

Where you at? It's not terribly hard to scrounge up a jeep in Houston area, based on what I see on used car lots and for sale on roadsides.

Are the 2.5L 4 cyl really that gutless?

I feel like i see plenty of them on the roads that do just fine.

They're absolutely worthless.

It takes awhile to find a deal on a 4.0/4.2 but if you keep looking you'll find one eventually.

Or buy a 2.5 and swap a 4.0 into it. Just remember the swap will cost you a couple thousand and a lot of man hours. But you will be sorely disappointed with a 4 cylinder

Any thoughts on these two?

1987 YJ

1977 CJ-5

http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/cto/4143166865.html

I've been noticing a lot of CJ-5s for sale lately. From what I've read, it seems like the CJ-5 above is a Franken-Jeep. The T18-B/Dana 24 is a combo usually found in a Ford F250 from the 60s-70s all mated to a Chevy 283 V8.

Maybe that 24 is a typo? The 4 speed was an option in 77.

The dash appears to have been replaced with a flat panel, and same vintage vs same vintage GM engine swaps aren't exactly an upgrade.

The YJ is Frankenstein too, but they fixed most of the problems that 87 had.

I thought it might be too, but after doing some research, I found that Ford used a combo of the T-18B & Dana 24 in diesel trucks from 1967-72.

http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/t18_t19.htm

(From Novak Conversions)

quote:
A certainly rare version of the Ford T18 was the T18B, as provided in diesel trucks from 1967-1972, featuring higher gear ratios in 1st thru 3rd gears (4.32, 2.26, 1.51). This transmission will be very rarely encountered, but individuals should be aware of the possiblity.

Dana 24

quote:
This is a fairly uncommon transfer case. It's a two-speed, divorce-mounted transfer case that was used from 1960 to 1973. If you've got one of these, and it starts having problems, most likely it's the bearings. Some folks have a very high opinion of this unit, and others think that upon its breaking, it would probably be easier to replace the Dana 24 with a divorce mounted NP205 than to find parts for it.

The research of the YJ makes it sound like a lot of the problems assocaited with the early YJ's systems were fixed, effectively making it a CJ-7 in a different skin.

That YJ isn't bad, I'd go for it. Only thing I don't like is the weber. A good running BBD will have more power than a Weber, problem is getting it to run good.

I'd throw out the 258 and drop in a 4.0. Thats what I did with mine. Life is too short to mess with a carb on a wrangler.

Well still looking, can't seem to make a decision on way or another apparently. Or they are gone by the time I get to them.

Found this one:

CJ-5

Looks clean, thinking it'd be a good deal at 6k.

Thoughts?

Half that and maybe. I'd run. Look at the bondo crack on the passengers side. The body is obviously rough and the paint and prep is poor

I didn't see the ad. What was it?

When I was looking, I ran into numerous fake ads. Then, when I found a promising one that was real it'd be sold within a day if not within hours.

I need the combined power of TexAgs Jeep knowledge to tell me if this is a good deal.

I always loved the Scramblers, but i have no idea if they are worth this much.
