The thread on the MyBCS forum got me thinking of all the memorable West Texas newscasters I remember when I was much younger.

For me, J. Gordon Lund always comes to mind. The man was Big 2 Weather in the 80s.

Thanks. I originally typed Lunn, but it's been so long, I couldn't remember if it was N or D.

Pamela Hamm. In fact I think she was still on last time I went home.

IIRC, she only had one hand. I don't know the story behind it, though.

Tom Colter and Tom Glasman from CBS7 (pre mall days) were the two nicest and friendliest guys around, but neither is in the television news business anymore.

in Abilene it was Charlie Jordan, a retired Navy Master Chief (E9). Before his weather forecast he always gave a report on how his garden was doing, people starting bringing him veggies and he'd show them off on air.

We've had quite a few Aggie grads on air here too, George Flickenger comes to mind....I think he's in Tulsa doing tornado research now....

Who was the lady who did the weather in San Angelo, then moved on to the Weather Channel?

It seems like west Texas is a starting point for a lot of folks and if they are good move on quickly.

All of the Big 2 crew - Mike Barker, Becky Neighbors, J Gordon Lunn, and Skip Baldwin. I remember the one handed chick on channel 9.

Sarah Holland (an Aggie) did the weather in Midland for awhile. I forget which station she was on.

This past February, I was walking into Big 5 Sports on 42nd, and out walked Mike Barker. I wanted to say hi, but he was on his cell phone.

Mike Barker, Becky Neighbors are the two that I'll always remember. My mom went to high school with Becky. And Mike did a really nice story on my grandfather when he passed away back in December.

Oh, and Tom Tom Tefertiller. He's my uncle and an Aggie.

Pat was my Sunday School teacher in the late 60's. Nice lady and very involved in the community. Did nice public interest stories, etc.

Edit for at least one typo.

Horace Brown.

A buddy of mine told me a story a few months ago that went like this...

quote:
Man I saw Horace Brown at The Bar the other weekend and there was a group of girls that wanted to take pictures with him...so he did but afterwards he came up to me at the bar to get a beer and I said man it must be nice to get all the little girlies to hang all over you, and his drunk response to me was "B**** I'm GANGSTA, they don't faise me"

I just got my beer and shook my head, cause no way did Horace Brown just tell me he was GANGSTA

My wife knew Horace when she went to MC, either Horace and/or his friend Booker were on the 5 year plan at a 2 year JC.

It's funny to have watched that guy when I grew up be this seemingly polite tv personality that even came to my elementary school to talk actually be this ghetto *******.

I am a prosecutor in Odessa, so I have had the opportunity to meet with Mike Barker. Truly not a nicer guy around. Great guy, and what a voice!

Jay Hendrix cracks me up with his now jet black dyed hair!

Jeff Stewart was the Sports guy in Odessa/Midland for awhile, but he just left. He is a recent Ag grad. He was very good.

Also, Horace Brown was a witness in a recent murder trial, and I do not think I have ever met a guy as rude as he is! Rascist as can be, too!

Speaking of which, does anyone know what happened to Jeff Stewart? It was nice having an Aggie covering sports in the t-shirt t-sip capital of Texas.

Jeff Stewart goes to my church and is in my small group. Great guy, and I thought he was very good.

He is working in the oilfield for his father-in-law.

KTXS has had some good weather guys in my lifetime. Jerry Eckhart was the first one I remember, I believe he was the first actual meteorologist to be hired by an Abilene TV station. That was back in the day with the blue and white radar that had the county boundaries and nothing else. Then along came Steve Kersh, who is an Aggie I believe, and he brought the fancy new "Live Doppler 12" with him. He left to go to D-FW I think, but he's in Amarillo now. Another Aggie, George Flickinger, replaced him. Flickinger had the most interesting choice of ties that I've ever seen, but he was a darned good meteorologist and became my favorite one of all time. Nate Johnson (also an Aggie) followed Flickinger, I'm not sure where he left for. Damon Lane is the guy now, not sure if he's an Aggie or not. He's pretty solid, I suppose, but he's no Flickinger.

Flickinger and Nate have been known to post on Texags, particularly this West Texas board, on occasion.

KTAB's Bill Chaney was quite popular until he got caught messing around with little boys. My dad was on the grand jury that indicted him, and wasn't very happy when he came walking down the stairs of the Jones County Courthouse and every tv camera from Abilene was pointed at his face.

KTAB has had several guys who were just "weathermen", not meteorologists. Sam Nichols is probably my favorite KTAB personality, and he was a darned good girls' basketball coach too. Randy Turner was always pretty solid. I was a fan of Rex Andrew forever, whether he was doing weather or news or doing his thing as justice of the peace. I can't remember the new guy's name, Dan something or other, but he's kind of goofy on camera. Marcy Novak, KTAB's weekend meteorologist, is an Aggie class of 2006.

Wow, small world. I live in the metroplex -- have for years now, but I was friends with Jeff Stewart in elementary school and junior high in San Angelo. I had heard he was doing sports in Odessa but didn't know he left. Crazy...

Howdy! Thanks for the mention in the rundown of KTXS' greatest hits; although, I do have to say that I'm an Aggie only by marriage. Proposed under the Century Tree, too. (But, as the Mrs. reminds me -- I still had to get J.P. before every home basketball game!)

After a brief spell in Alabama, we're now holding the fort in Raleigh, NC. Hope all is well in Aggieland and the Big Country.

Gig 'em!

I grew up in Ft. Stockton so I occassionally click the west Texas board and today I find out I must be the oldest guy who clicked this thread. I remember Ed Costello at KOSA with Jay Mahaffey doing sports. Can't remember the weatherman's name.

Horace Brown a gangsta? I always thought there was an outside chance he was Humpty Hump of the Digital Undergrounds.
