Midday sucks balls like always during August. Evenings are breezy and pleasant. It's Texas.

This is just not true lol. Both actual temp and the heat index is regularly in the high 90s at sunset and later

Several times this month its been 90 degrees until close to midnight here in central Texas.

August has always been balls hot, but what I've noticed the last decade or so is the lack of summer pop ups we would always get.

Have also noticed that there are zero cold fronts until November these days.

I don't know if it goes back the last decade or so but we've definitely had an area of high pressure sitting over us for a couple of Augusts the last few years which has killed the rain.

Here's rain at IAH in August the last few years:

2026 - 0
2025 - 1.2"
2024 - 3.01"
2023 - 0
2022 - 8.58"
2021 - 2.51"
2020 - 4.92"

30 year normal - 4.84"

Anyone that wants to leave Texas….see if you can take 1,00,000 of your closest friends with you.

I'm loving it. In a few months it's going to be 40's at night and probably wet. I Hate winter. I can work all day and be warm but not uncomfortable in 100+.

It is warmer than it was decades ago due to urban heat island effect.

August mornings in the 60s have gone the way of the dodo bird and even overnight lows of the low 70s are disappearing.

I went and looked up the data at IAH, in the 90s you had 25 August nights where lows were in the 60s (16 were 67-69 and 9 were 60-66), so 2-3 nights per August. Overall average low of 73 degrees on August nights in the 90s.

That doesn't happen anymore. Too much asphalt and concrete everywhere storing the heat.

We were in a solar minimum in the entire decade of the 90's.

Heat island effect is absolutely real and it has made a difference in the general Houston area. But right now we are also still in a solar maximum cycle. Temps will be a few degrees above "normal" for a few more years.

The Houston concrete jungle is going to be hotter than the surrounding area in perpetuity though because we cover the world in concrete around here.

Nahh, it actually is true. I can sit on my back porch in the evenings as the sun sets and be relatively comfortable as long as there is a little breeze.

An hour before and it's absolutely not comfortable at all.

Bonus tough guy points to you then.

For the rest of us normal people, it is not pleasant here in the evenings this time of year. Its just a fact of life. There's no reason to lie and say its "pleasant and breezy." We already live here.

CONCRETE JUNGLE BONUS: Not only does it make the city 15-20 degrees warmer than all surrounding areas all the time, it also creates epic flood events.

How do we order the next solar minimum cycle because I want to get back to the 90s.

Avg Hi / Lo in August:
1970s: 91.9 / 71.1
1980s: 94.2 / 73.9
1990s: 94.4 / 73.4
2000s: 94.2 / 74.8
2010s: 95.7 / 76.4
2020s: 97.2 / 77.2

Edit: and I'm someone who prefers a 100 degree summer day with a cold beer by the pool over 30s/40s temps in the winter 10/10 times.

But those temps from 70s Houston would be chefs kiss. That's basically our late September now.

While it's disappointing to hear we'll still be above normal for a few more years, it's encouraging that we'll presumably be back to normal or maybe even below after that..? If I'm understanding correctly, that's great news!

p.s. What is "normal" for this time of year?

Agreed, yeah it's been hot, but there hasn't been that many 100+ days this year compared to summers in the past. In the grand scheme of things, it hasn't been that bad.

Yep. And having a mild and wet May through July makes a very hot and dry August feel even worse.

I do agree with schmellba though. Late evening if not bad with a breeze in the shade. No breeze, it still sucks.

Yes, it's Texas, and the heat ****ing sucks. You aren't going to lose your CERTIFIED TEXAN status for pointing out the blatantly obvious.

And, not to rain on your parade, and also not sure where in the NE you have relocated to, but there will probably be some things that suck about your new city or state, once the honeymoon is over. Whether it's politics, new taxes, or something else.

Good and bad almost everywhere...but summers here ar really bad after June. Warm-to-hot Thanksgivings suck too.

I agree here.

My first decade in Houston was the 00s. Seemed sea breeze/pop up storms were much more common in the summer, but ever since the 2011-2013 drought, it seems August is just a level up more miserable and dry.

I'm not saying those are facts, which is why I said seems, but man, some cooling rain each day would be nice.

I was born and raised here in Houston and I particularly hated those types of summers in the 80's and 90's. We were consistently geting rained out at the pool, or Astroworld/Waterworld. Lots of afternoon showers.

But to me, those rainy summers were not really the norm...if anything, rainy vs dry summers were 50/50 at most. Also, I think those pop-ups way back then were far more likely in June, July and September, than August. I could be wrong, but that is how I remember it.

But I always come back to the pavement....there is just so much more of it. And it seems to basically store energy and then radiate in the evening and early at night. I'd be more interested in seeing the date for small rural towns...like El Campo, or Smithville etc. I wonder if these places are getting significantly warmer and more arid.

Having grown up in the only place in TX with four true seasons, I'd rather have the snow shovel. On average, the weather in The Panhandle is more comfortable. I'm not saying it's perfect.
