Buddy of mine lives across the bay from Tampastan, often takes his boat to work. They took off for Destin today and left everything behind, including the boat and his jetski. Hopes he has a house to return to.

Out of curiosity, why leave it all behind instead of trailer it out?

Asked him the same. Said by the time they hit the road late morning roads were already going to ***** Didn't want to **** around and get stuck. Said everyone was running out of gas already.

My aunt and uncle are a few blocks inland from Tampa bay (near Berns steakhouse). They aren't evacuating. Said their house is at 20' above sea level so riding it out…

Praying for them. This is gonna be a bad one. Wife keeps joking about moving to the Tampa area. Never a chance in hell I'm doing that

No mandatory evac?

Police aren't going door to arresting people who refuse to evacuate in a mandatory evacuation. It pretty much just means that they are warning you ahead of time that if you don't evacuate and you call for help, they are not coming to help you.

When I talked to her earlier she said she was in zone c and only zones a and b were mandatory evac.

You don't let your tank get below half full during hurricane season when you live in a hurricane zone.

This evacuation is an example of why.

You can pretty much guarantee to derate the roof by 20%. Those windload calcs are for perfect materials installed perfectly, etc. and that never happens.

At best that roof will be good for ~160mph sustained. And, frankly, even if the roof is good for 200 - odds are the structure is not unless it's reinforced CMU or concrete walls.

From what I understand a lot of construction is cinder block with siding or stucco over it. Not a lot of stick-built.

The next question is always, well, what about the wind?

I would be a nervous wreck if my family was staying for a potentially minimum cat 3 hurricane, much less one that could blow back up if it doesn't encounter wind shear for near a long as predicted.

I can't help but wonder if this is the type of storm that leveled Galveston in 1900.

What size storm are you evacuating Houston? I'm on west side and think a strong 3 or higher I'm out. Just curious what everyone else thinks

Just south of Katy.

My wife and I always said cat 3 is when we're getting out, but honestly, Beryl may have changed that a bit for us while we have kids. We were fortunate to get power back the same day but seeing how many were without power for 5+ days, and figuring at cat 2 would be worse, it might be smarter just to head to her parents in the hill country if anything cat 2+ comes directly to us again.

Kids change the calculus for me a lot.

There are neighborhoods in Tampa with debris on the streets from being flooded from Helene. No chance it gets picked up before Milton. Will be flying projectiles and clog storm drains.

Beryl definitely had an impact on me… I think I would stay behind and let family leave during cat 3. I should be alright with generators for a week or so, longer in NG service stays active.

Silly post, Winky. If we can't pray for dumb or stubborn people, that would limit the praying tremendously.

Upside is, if your concern is just about lack of power you can wait the storm out. Did that with beryl, left the following day. No traffic jams.

My BIL is in Tampa and will weather the hurricane sleeping in Tropicana Field (MLB stadium)

He spent today helping transport people out of hospitals.

The 1900 storm had winds estimated at 140-145 mph which would put it in strong Cat 4 territory.

Biggest issue with that storm was the fact that structures weren't build like they are today with hurricanes in mind, and the meteorologists at the time were worse than they are now and didn't put any stock into the Cuban weather data on this storm and were convinced up until the day before landfall that it would hit western Florida and that it was not hurricane strength.

This.

Out of that $250k, maybe $25k will be used for actual relief. The rest goes to overhead, management pay, vacations, pensions, etc.
