This thing is going to be a disaster of biblical proportions if this forecast holds. Possibly still a hurricane when it gets to Atlanta. That's nuts.
DeKalb County just got put under hurricane watch.

That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

I have a good friend who lives near Tallahassee. He said the latest forecast has this thing passing five miles from his house. His in-laws live nearby and built their house with insulated concrete form (walls are one foot thick concrete). They all boogied out of town this morning.

Yeah you don't wanna be the only person left in an empty town with no services.

Yup. I go tarpon fishing over there every year and usually stay in Lanark. I wonder if the place I stay will be there next summer.

Pardon this intrusion of useless information, but I learned last night that there was once a comic strip character named "Beryl the Peril."

Kind of surprised that nickname never came up.

Also, Beryl was apparently a girl's name in the comic.

Weird, because Beryl is also a female hurricane's name.

Florida has storm evacuation down to a science. It wasn't like that for long.

Morbidly curious how this impacts Atlanta. Looks catastrophic

I'll go on record and say Atlanta handles it better than houston in terms of nearly every item other than hood violence.

If this was Houston, Centerpoint would have already started rolling blackouts and probably shut off gas service to half of the city to prepared.

fast moving storm. could still be a cat 1 when it reaches ATL. but yes you are correct, its in northern GA.

Was about to say the same thing.

Yeah, Atlanta handles hurricanes better than Houston.

So do Oklahoma City and Kansas City.

I think they mean storm surge flooding, mostly.

But, no doubt, the rain is going to flood the inland pretty bad.

IF Atlanta gets hit with the same winds as Houston, they will be in for a world of hurt. I think that is a pretty big IF though.

I am no fan of Centerpoint's recent performance, but I would expect any city 250 miles from the coast to do better than a coastal city (which Houston, oddly enough, is).

no, i know. i'm just saying Harvey dumped over 40 inches on Houston. that's real rain.

Harvey was a near stationary tropical storm acting as a water pump.

Other than a much larger storm surge they're going to get whalloped with a beefy Beryl that'll move through fast and cause 16x the damage. Trees, power, roofs...all that's going to be effed up.

Each rise on the scale is 4x the damage as the previous number. I do not envy them. If Atlanta gets hit by a Cat 1, could be worse for them then what Houston had.

From 15'-20' of storm surge.

More like Ike with minimal rain until it stalls in Tennessee / upper Georgia. Most of Florida is expected to get less than 10" of rain. That kind of storm surge will be catastrophic if real.

What people don't realize is wind and rain are one thing. Storm surge does more damage and creates no possibility of escape. Based on latest projections it would be pretty similar to Katrina if it had hit Houston or New Orleans like it is projected. Scary stuff.

About the only silver lining for this storm for Florida is that projected landfall is in a very sparsely populated and little developed part of the state. Lots of national forest, state forest, and WMA in the area. There's a number of little fishing villages and vacation spots that are going to get hammered though.

I spend a lot of time between Port St. Joe and St. Mark's and have been going to St. George's Island since I was a kid. That's all getting blasted and I have a good friend who lives with his family in Port St. Joe and another in Carrabelle. Port St. Joe will get damage but it doesn't look like it will be as bad for them as it will in Carrabelle. Hopefully my friend there doesn't lose his home.

I was referring to Beryl as a Cat 1 hitting Houston.
A Cat 1 Helene hitting Atlanta may do more damage because they're less prepared. Hope this helps.
