going forward instead of "did this home flood during Harvey?" we are going to hear "how long did you lose power during beryl?"
IMO, people have lost some perspective. This is nothing close to Uri or the derecho, and not in the same ballpark as Harvey, in terms of extreme weather and duration of service interruption. If we get to 5 days and people are without power, then it may be up for debate on the first two.

Totally agree we are like 60 hours out from a direct hurricane strike and people are irate that not everyone has power back. Kind of crazy.

This. Tired of all the "it was only a Cat1!" stuff, like it was no big deal. Sure it wasn't a major hurricane, but it was still an f'***ing hurricane. Don't know what is so hard to understand about that.

I've lived in the same place for 9 years now. Never lost power before this year. Harvey, no issues. Ice storm, no issues. Dorecho in May, lost it for about 12 hours. Now 3 days without power and there is something going and that's not right.

Patchwork grid at best, incompetence at worst. But something needs to happen. Heads need to roll. This is how actual business works.

But it won't happen. And nothing will change. And we will get hit again soon and it will get worse.

And screw all the centerpoint fan boys on here. Y'all are proven you are shills for a monopoly company who screws people.

Agree with you 100%. Still no power for us, and I know damn well the only thing that will come out of this is 20 cent kWh prices when it comes time to renew our contract.

I think the issue is more the lack of quality communication from Centerpoint et al and obvious lack of planning coming in to this storm. I think most of us are reasonable people that understand **** is going to be tough after a direct hit form any category storm, but Centerpoint is really ****ting the bed here instilling any sense of confidence in the public that progress is being made to restore power

Not crazy at all. Centerpoint has proven their incompetence. Linemen sitting in staging areas still waiting for instructions days after the storm.

Reading through the comments ...

Houston area is on the Gulf Coast. There will be extreme weather cases, rain systems (Tax Day, Allison), wind events (Beryl), big ass hurricanes (Rita and Ike) and the Durach, extreme Freeze (2021)

We have trees. We have power lines. Wind will take them out. Crews are dispatched. Hurricanes typically come when it is blasted hot.

What can be done better? Here is my opinion by experience and observation.

State provided generators for fuel stations. This can be considered part of infrastructure. Lots of fuel in the tanks.

Lighted intersections. Design for long duration after power loss.

Internet - Consider as a utility and have power backup. I did not lose Internet, but I dumped Xfinity after they refused to repair my line as neighbors was after a wind event.

Individuals:
Just know you will be impacted, plan for the impact. I've been here for a long ass time and it just happens over and over. Nothing new here.

Home Electric - Plan circuits for a generator. Can be done for $500 to $Way too much. Decide on essentials. Plan a working room with a window unit. Fridge. Just enough to get by during a storm outage. Power generator on Propane from a big ass tank in the yard. Design this in early and be independent. Or feed from your Natural Gas. Or just pay whole house solution.

Homeowners - If you are contracting to build, design in the protections. Electric, pipe freeze prevention, air conditioned living space that can run on a generator.

I went for a drive around my neighborhood after getting gas for the generator, and were surrounded by power on all four sides including houses that are on our same circuit. There are tree limbs touching a line where it goes dark, so it looks like we're a limb removal away. At this point I'd pay for it myself if I could find someone to do it.

Can we take a quick sec and pivot over to how bad xfinity is blowing this situation?

My TV box has been stuck on reboot since the power came back on and I had to reactivate my XFi gateway box.

72 hours without power here at 77382. Most of
My neighborhood that has the means have left town. Previous record for longest was Feb 21 freeze at about 36 hours.

I'm gonna be first in line to buy a tri fuel genny and set up a 50a plug

Email from Centerpoint last night:

CenterPoint Energy and mutual assistance crews continue focusing on restoring power to the 2.26 million customers impacted by Hurricane Beryl. During the damage assessment phase we walked more than 8,500 miles of circuits uncovering downed trees and debris, impacting poles and wires across our system. We understand how important it is for customers to be able to plan around their outages, so more specific estimated restoration times will be available tomorrow. Thank you for your patience.

completely agree. the emails aren't working.

also the local politicians are letting them twist in the wind

I agree with you on all fronts.

To paraphrase, plan ahead within your own means. Anticipate the worst, hope for the best.

My subtle issue with everyone's consternation is what would we have done 20-30-50 years ago? Weather events are not some new phenomena. People have way more resources to prepare more than ever before, yet it's Centerpoint fault or someone else's fault for the current state.

I hesitated to buy a full home generator after the big freeze of '21, but finally had one installed 6 months ago. I've been on gen set power since 0900 Monday morning and Entergy has an estimated restoration date of July 14.

Not really. People are fed up with multiday outages. Ever increasing fees and prices on deteriorating infrastructure. We are doing nothing as a whole to improve the quality of life and improve the future of the city and area.

Might sound drastic but when the 1900 hurricane hit Galveston it changed the trajectory of that city for good. Honestly as a city if we cannot get our act together we will do long-term irreparable harm to our cities reputation and economic future.

I think what is frustrating some people is they were without power for 3-5 days after the derecho. The thinking was (and maybe flawed thinking) that all the tree trimming, tree removal, pole repair, transformer upgrades, etc would spare them from a long power outage from future storms.

I'm at HEB market street getting propane. They have full tanks, if you can't hook to nat gas (assuming you can get the gen today).

I'm good right now, quoting my previous post as I'm sittin pretty compared to most

Still no power in the woodlands 77382. Neighbor has a Generac and he loaned me a cable. I hooked up my fridge, garage freezer, and a window unit for the bedroom. Good people.

I got rid of xfinity last year and switched to ATT fiber. I NEVER thought I'd be a "cord cutter," but aside from 1 large and 1 small internet outage, I've been decently happy with their fiber offering.

I mean if Alison Cook wants to bug out then by all means

having the power go out multiple days after a hurricane direct hit is pretty much my expectation

the metro area is huge. the damage wasn't catastrophic but it was extremely widespread. it's going to take a while.

i'm having a hard time imaging the infrastructure fix that alleviates a hurricane direct hit problem. your mileage may vary.

often the only way around is through. and through means a ****load of electricians working around the clock and being directed efficiently.

Some of us can still remember a time before today.

For perspective, whenever people ask my 80+ year old mom how they dealt with Houston summers before AC, her answer is always the same: "we *****ed about it then too."

I'm 45. Grew up on the MS Gulf Coast. Didn't have central heat and air in the house I grew up in until I was 13. Only ceiling fans.

I'm actually ok without A/C. I need a fridge.

As far as these outages are concerned, extended losses of power have a much larger economic impact now than they did even 20 years ago. Not to mention there are large parts of Houston that have endured multi-day power outages two or three separate times just in the last year (storm last June, storm in May, and this). That's not sustainable.

and I thought H-Town was the "Energy Capital of the World"! Seriously, this is an infrastructure problem that's been going on for years. Harvey exposed it. They "fixed" some issues as a result. And a Cat1 has literally shut down the 3rd largest city in America. NO EXCUSES. Elect some people that will pour tax dollars in improving the infrastructure of that great city!!!!

Terminal B was a breeze this morning. Wide open, able to check bags and no line in security. This at 7:15am. Parking garage was very empty too. Some restaurants opening back up but not all. Chick Fil A is open.

I have had att fiber internet as well and it has worked fine until the utility pole blew down and snapped the line to my house.
I'm still waiting in CenterPoint to fix this pole before I can call at&t back out to restring my line.

Ike was 120 at landfall. Once it got to the metro area it was much lower. I posted some data yesterday but wind at IAH was the same for Ike/Beryl. I've seen some other locations that gusts were higher for Beryl. The simplistic thinking of Cat 1 = no big deal doesn't work.

the key to everything is sleep. ppl start cracking up if they can't sleep.

your disaster plan should be how am I going to be able to rest in the worst-case. if that means you have to leave town then you have to plan for that.
