Generator question…

Is it harmful if it simply runs out of gas overnight? I assume not as this would be the same as a lawn mower engine running out while using but wanted to ask before heading to bed. Thanks.

It isn't a situation you want but you'll be fine. Your load will see voltage and frequency variations as it dies and surges and dies. I spent 20+ years doing emergency data center work and we had plenty of "real" generators that died from fuel issues.

OMFG can we put the lines in the ground already?! This is maddening. Underground lines means less linemen required. Just waterproof them and be done with it.

Do it, CenterPoint. Your shareholders deserve better.

Sure buddy. You paying for it?

Yes, sure, fine. We're paying through the nose right now for crews to repair lines again and again after repeated storms. We're paying through the nose for lost productivity. The attitude for some seems to be that if it costs literally anything to prepare for infrequent disaster events then it isn't money well spent.

"It'll cost money" was the same excuse people made for not improving Houston's storm water drainage. Fortunately, better sense prevailed and we slowly but systematically installed storm water sewers across wide stretches of older neighborhoods. That should be the same approach with electrical distribution.
There is a trick here! We are still paying, but the utility isn't!!!! Everything is reimbursed by FEMA!!! All of the outside crews, FEMA money! That's why the fight like cats and dogs to get storm duty. They love getting paid the minute they get in their truck and hitting OT after about 2 days working the storm.

UG construction is very expensive compared to OH. Most utilities will cover the cost or a large portion of OH to a subdivision as they can recover the cost through their rates. To go UG the developer has to pay the difference and most of the time that is a no go for the developer.

Other side of the street from me is lit up tonight in Westbury.

Inching closer.

I'm still dark and couldn't get the ****ing portable generator going no matter how much I cussed at it.

Finally got my little generator going and have the window unit plus a fan I bought at Home Depot tonight. Hoping the generator holds up for at least a few hours.

I am sleeping butt ass naked and the combination is actually working well. I couldn't convince my wife to join my nudist cult and she is actually under the covers because the fan is actually working well.

Power back in in 77079.

Was at my breaking light after being without for 9 days during Harvey and 4 days during the derecho. We had made plans to finally go somewhere else to sleep tonight when power came back on.

In the marker for a Generec.

Same argument applies to refurbishing the Astrodome to original spec complete with heavy syrup Coke, Dome Foam and Hot & Smokeys.

With the amount spent letting it rot, and also the amount wasted on Covid parking lot hospital tents it could've been done already and in prime condition for another round of hurricane evacuees to come ruin it.

Anyone worry the people without power are going to rise up in a "Storm the Bastille / Jan 6 insurrection"?

Btw, I don't have power…

Some Twitter and Reddit babies might try to get that going, but the city has been through worse and for longer.

I think having smart phones with decent data to sit here refreshing in search of updates makes it feel like time is passing slower than in previous disasters when we just had to wonder what was going on.

Another night with no power in 77386. Honestly the most inexcusable part of this (at least to me) is the lack of communication.

I'm no expert and I admittedly have no idea how long it "should" take to get things back up and running. But it's not hard to communicate.

It's just been a really ****ty last 72 hours or so. Seems like it won't be until Sunday for my neighborhood.

My non mechanic answer is no. I manually starve my generator every 6-8 weeks of fuel as part of my ongoing maintenance.

As a new member of the 77386 crew, has the power always taking longer than others to come back? I had a neighbor tell me that the outages seem to last longer than others while I was moving some boxes in last week

We were without power for a week after Ike when temps were 100+. Getting power back yesterday seemed like a luxury.

I've lived here about two years so I'm still pretty new unfortunately. I can only speak from personal experience but I haven't had a long outage since I've been here.

Not yet. Said f it, came to Astros game. Gonna get hammered so I can sleep through the night. 3 hours of sleep in 48 is killing me.

Get out of town. Book a hotel. Even it is Waco. There is a Texas Ranger museum there and despite rumors….Waco isn't dry. Most drunk town I have been to…..

If I could, I would. However, I have responsibilities that I can't skip out on. Strangely enough, I went to the Astros game tonight where I learned the season ticket holders behind mine live a few blocks down to the house I just bought.

IMO, people have lost some perspective. This is nothing close to Uri or the derecho, and not in the same ballpark as Harvey, in terms of extreme weather and duration of service interruption. If we get to 5 days and people are without power, then it may be up for debate on the first two.

I've lived in the same place for 9 years now. Never lost power before this year. Harvey, no issues. Ice storm, no issues. Dorecho in May, lost it for about 12 hours. Now 3 days without power and there is something going and that's not right.

Patchwork grid at best, incompetence at worst. But something needs to happen. Heads need to roll. This is how actual business works.

But it won't happen. And nothing will change. And we will get hit again soon and it will get worse.

And screw all the centerpoint fan boys on here. Y'all are proven you are shills for a monopoly company who screws people.

State should mandate no trees within 100 yards of electrical infrastructure and give providers 1 year to clean it all up. Then heavy fines if an outage is caused by a tree falling. If a tree is on private property and the property owner refuses to let it be removed, the property owner receives a fine if the tree falls and causes damage.

I have seen so many poles, transformers and lines down this week from downed trees it is nuts. So easily preventable.

So not one single tree for 100 yards on either side of any powerlines? Going to have to cut down practically every tree in Houston.

Totally agree we are like 60 hours out from a direct hurricane strike and people are irate that not everyone has power back. Kind of crazy.

Right? And now, with much less vegetation, we would have an even greater flooding issue. SMDH.
