Got excited this afternoon- there were 3 centerpoint trucks in my culdesac. Thought maybe we were next to get power on. Nope, the neighbor was getting a new meter installed.

What kind of 'damage' can come to a home that has no electricity in this heat?

I lost at 10:05 am on Monday and have not been back to the house.

I'd guess mainly food spoilage. Fridge will likely be absolutely foul when you return, even if it was empty as it had no circulation

If you left trash in your trash can that's another one.

And I'd guess the slight risk of damage to furniture, wood floors, etc if the humidity gets up there.

Your fridge is probably not a cesspool of rot…yet, in part because it hasn't been opened. I took a sparkling water out of mine earlier today, and it was still chilled slightly. This is after opening it multiple times yesterday and today.

By this evening, the fridge was markedly warmer. By tomorrow, though, it will be the temp of my house, which hit 79 this evening. My power was out for three days last June, and that's how long it took for the fridge to warm up then, too.

My freezer contents survived that outage. I didn't open the freezer at all until I got power back, and everything was still frozen or had some ice, depending on where it was in the unit.

If I don't get power back by Thursday, I'm going to start pulling meat from my freezer and cooking it.

I'm going in to Houston tomorrow to buy some r22 and try to recharge an AC at my rental. I can bring a generator if anyone wants to borrow one.

On that note, anyone have experience recharging AC systems?

It's not hard if you have power and a set of gauges. Suction line pressure (the big one) should be approximately equal to the current indoor temp.

I don't have gauges and can't find anywhere that sells them off the shelf so looking at marketplace.

Did you check harbor freight?

Appears theirs is not rated for R22 although I could probably make it work. Found a LICENSED HVAC TECHNICIAN to top it off with my R22 for a fair price while I get quotes.

Me too; 1 rolled down my cul-de-sac but they were just assessing damages - probably jotting down parts / services needed for the next group to bring to fix the problems in our neighborhood

I did chat with Buzz yesterday.

Part of his fence had blown over to reveal a collection of old wheels and tires. Looked like Sanford & Sons back there.

Guy is something else.

That sounds right. Was talking to one of his old neighbors earlier today and thought of him.

My freaking next door neighbor just got power back. The split on the grid is between our houses.

Could also be something specific to your line or transformer. Think the pole transformers in our hood each serve four houses.

I drove around and their side down several streets has it.

There's no line damage on the transformers near me...so I suspect it's one of the fuses that blew before the storm that popped again.

Where are you in Westbury?
I'm in WB3. south side of Belfort.

One suggestion I made to a buddy was looking for an AirBnB out of town.

I'd look a bit further down the coast like Rockport/Port A. I bet quite a few cancelled their plans last week and there are probably places available for a reasonable price since they won't get rebooked.

For example...

Rockport AirBnB

You just triggered jetch

Just catching up … after getting F'd in the A on the first trip, we peeled up near lake Travis to crush beers poolside for the week while out of power

My electrician charged $715. He did a couple things for me:

Installed 50 amp interlock outlet
lockout kit for the breaker box
Installed whole house surge protector
replace a breaker that was going bad.

An electrician made the rounds in my hood after the last storm and offered interlock kit and generator plugin at 50amp for $380.

Going to have him install it at our place after this latest fiasco.

Went back and looked at some old messages. I think this will be a new record for a continuous outage in my hood.

Freeze was right at 40 hours (we suffered extra because Centerpoint forgot to flip our circuit or some BS like that).

Storm last June was 46 hours.

We are at 36 now, but I doubt power is back on by tomorrow morning. 9 am will be 48 hours.

I had everything on hand including the 50A breaker and a couple other breakers that needed to be swapped around as well as the interlock and the 50A receptacle. My guy charged me $476 but that also included doing some work in a sub panel for my apartment and an hour where they helped me make sure I was wiring the apartment correctly. I think it was a pretty good deal, but you can absolutely save some money getting the equipment before you have the electrician come over.

19 days for Ike.

5 days for the direcho.

If you're measuring in hours, it's not worth tracking.

Here is my "dumb" question. Anyone know any hotels with availability tonight....

My husband had somewhere lined out to stay that semi fell through (still somewhere to stay, but super inconvenient for everyone). He is finishing up some stuff in Katy area, and has an early morning appointment in Atascocita.

Here is the latest power outage map based on the Whataburger app. Orange means the Whataburger is open and black means it's closed. The assumption is that it does not have power.

The mobile site just sucks. There are two maps. Hard to see because the graphic with each phase/stage is copied over the map. But one will take you to the brown map (there is a legend, just have to click it) which just shows how many people in each zip are without power. The other will take you to this map. Not sure I understand it though. My whole neighborhood is green and none of us have power.

I hadn't transplanted here yet when Ike hit, but I hear about it a lot from my coworkers. They usually just say "two weeks". That always blows my mind. My parents weren't out power that long after Katrina. I really don't know how y'all didn't lose your minds.

I knew the Derecho was bad for some people. My BF has a coworker who was out for a long time.

This would definitely be more tolerable if it wasn't the third one in three(ish) years. At least Ike and the derecho were 15+ years apart!
