My freaking next door neighbor just got power back. The split on the grid is between our houses.

Could also be something specific to your line or transformer. Think the pole transformers in our hood each serve four houses.

I drove around and their side down several streets has it.

There's no line damage on the transformers near me...so I suspect it's one of the fuses that blew before the storm that popped again.

And it is back on.

So I am going to get a generator. Not a $15k Generac but am looking at a Tri-Fuel unit. Westinghouse 12500 peak watt, Champion Power 11500 watt seem to be the choices on Amazon. Will also shop locally. Will need the connections but also addition to breaker box, and since I know nothing I am sure I am missing something.

I'm in The Woodlands as well. We have had pretty good luck over the last few disasters since I've lived up here... Harvey onward. I've also had power back on within 24 hours everytime. I expected to lose power this time. Even expected a longer duration. I did not expect to completely lose cell service. I drove over to Austin this evening to stay a day or two to have access to phone and Internet for work.

Old discussion, but more relevant every passing year: At some point the City / Centerpoint just has to figure out how to bury distribution lines. This doesn't happen in other metros.

Saying this as one who has built subdivisions with buried electrical which weathered the derecho and Beryl fine, but am spending another balmy evening without power in the heights.

It's not that they don't know how, it's they know people don't want the rate raise that would be needed to do it.

That's where I say do the cost analysis and give people the opportunity to vote for the bonds or increased rates to do it. I've paid to move transmission lines and bury distribution lines through the course of new construction projects - yes it's a premium, but after how many of these outages does that scale tip to being worth it?

There's plenty of conversation about buying thousands of dollars in generators here. Just using a cost of $3500 for example, multiplied times the number of Beryl outages (2.5M) and that's $8.75B. At a million dollars a mile that's enough for all 6,200 miles of roads in Houston and leaves 40% unspent or for debt service or R&M. Amortize that cost into an electric bill for 15 years as a bond across the service area and the rate increase is $19/month.

your points are too valid and make too much sense. You really think all the idiots out there would vote yes on something like this if it even raised their electrical bill .50 cents a month??? People are stupid

Peak watts means surge at start up, not sustained running. Figure out what you intend to run in the house and their load, and size generator accordingly.

If you intend to fuel with other than gas, understand available watts will be less as propane is less efficient than gas. Natural gas even less than propane. So size accordingly. Bigger is always better.

Get a soft start on your ac unit regardless, but definitely so if you want it to run on a portable.

Understand where it will be and Understand what it takes to get fuel to it, electricity to the box, and exhaust away. Moving it to set up in a storm and in the dark sucks.

My portable is in the back of the detached garage near the breaker box. Through wall exhaust, natural gas flex line stays connected, but valve turned off.

Research and understand break in and maintenance needs. Dedicated fuel and oil funnels as well as replacing the stupid bolt for the oil drain with a quick valve makes regular oil changes much easier.

But, our power literally just went poof again. WTF!

We just moved from there to Cinco and falcon landing. New house never lost power but we're supposed to list the old house for sale on Thursday. Guess I can't do that if it doesn't have power.

But our Internet just went out again so whatever blew your power took our internet too

You in Woodland Heights?

My power flickered on for about 15 seconds around 3pm but turned back off. I drove around as well and didn't see any line workers anywhere in my area

A lot of trees have actually already been removed. At least 3 trees where completely across Gosling between Woodlands Pkwy and Research immediately after the storm. Haven't seen any electric crews. Although I suspect much of the problem lies outside the Woodlands proper.

I did chat with Buzz yesterday.

Part of his fence had blown over to reveal a collection of old wheels and tires. Looked like Sanford & Sons back there.

Guy is something else.

Cell service seems to have improved in the last hour or so. Still nothing in Sienna otherwise. No updates from xfinity either.

Xfinity just keeps sending out the generic "we're working on it" text. I haven't seen a single truck out in our section of Sienna, but they've got the HEB up and running.

During Harvey AT&T screwed up and went down and everybody moved to Xfinity. Now AT&T is up and Xfinity is crapping the bed

What kind of 'damage' can come to a home that has no electricity in this heat?

I lost at 10:05 am on Monday and have not been back to the house.

That's good to know. The trees we saw were along the 45 frontage road. There were down lines and trees resting on lines that hadn't been removed. I was surprised.

I'd guess mainly food spoilage. Fridge will likely be absolutely foul when you return, even if it was empty as it had no circulation

If you left trash in your trash can that's another one.

And I'd guess the slight risk of damage to furniture, wood floors, etc if the humidity gets up there.

I noticed those today as well and was surprised no one had secured the area. Lines on the ground. Poles snapped in half...

Wow man, thank you. this place is full of people that love to help each other though as I have experienced first hand on countless occasions. One of the reasons that makes this such a great place. Thank you though, for real. Very kind of you.
