The CEO of centerpoint should be fired.

Texas or Houston needs to assert itself on them and say to fix the problem now or we will replace them.

CenterPoint essentially exists because of Houston. That leverage needs to be used.

Someone pointed out on reddit (whether true or not) that Florida never has this kind of damage and people rarely go a day or 2 without power from storms. Not certain if that's true, but we should never accept that this is how we have to live our lives.

I no longer live in Houston but did for 28 years so I've been reading the thread and feel for everyone. I've been gone a year and a half now. Your mention of Florida got me to thinking. They don't have any areas with a population as large as Houston which just keeps growing and expanding and putting more demands on CP and their infrastructure. I completely understand the anger and frustration but they're sort of in a difficult position when these things happen.

I am headed to league city tomorrow and can bring about 15 gallons of gas, a generator, a chainsaw and a polesaw if anyone needs any of these things.

The AC at my rental is not working properly so I offered to recharge it for the time being and I was told that I'm not licensed so they don't want me messing with the refrigerant. Ok, well enjoy the summer heat. In case you had not noticed a hurricane blew through yesterday and the city is in chaos.

The tenants said no thanks because you aren't licensed? What difference does it make to them if they're renting?

Same for us. I want to say that we're on the circuit that comes off of Sandpiper, and there was a truck working over there. Hopefully they keep it going into the night and we get back on soon.

I have no idea. Honestly. Maybe they think the refrigerant will leak out and kill them, idk? I'm pretty frustrated because I did a lot of searching and YouTube watching then told them I was headed over and that was what they said. They have upstairs AC so I don't feel bad anymore after that response.

Yeah, it sounded like there were problems with our transformer. Guess it just depends which block you're on and which circuit.

Got home from the office to find … no power. 77494.

But at least I got some AC and was able to charge one of my power bricks.
Also in 77494 and we're still running off Generator. Cinco/Spring Green area has power but we do not. Hoping that changes soon…

No power or Comcast service in 77042 (home) or 77092 (office).

Took 6+ days to get power restored at the office following Derecho. Never lost power at home in May.

I have a feeling it will be 7 to 10 days.

I am part of the problem and you're the victim...

That's probably more to do with an inventive attempt to keep the generator dry than THD.

Wut? The pic was just a repost of my gen sitting out. Haven't gotten a proper cover yet.

I just want to point out that I've never seen someone more willing and enthusiastic to help others than you when an event calls for it (besides maybe Mattress Mac).

Surge protectors have zero to do with THD.

Also a UPS provides a clean sine wave only when on battery power.

On that note, anyone have experience recharging AC systems?

It's not hard if you have power and a set of gauges. Suction line pressure (the big one) should be approximately equal to the current indoor temp.

I don't have gauges and can't find anywhere that sells them off the shelf so looking at marketplace.

Did you check harbor freight?

Old discussion, but more relevant every passing year: At some point the City / Centerpoint just has to figure out how to bury distribution lines. This doesn't happen in other metros.

Saying this as one who has built subdivisions with buried electrical which weathered the derecho and Beryl fine, but am spending another balmy evening without power in the heights.

Power back on here in Pecan Grove. Came on for about 10 seconds, then stopped. Checked the breaker box, nothing appears tripped, but turned the main to OFF then back to ON which did the trick.

Nice. I'm in the section of Maplewood east of Hillcroft just across from the bagel shop. Been out of town for over a week and last I heard ours isn't back on yet. Hoping it's back by the time we get home on Thursday night.

Correct, sorry if I gave this impression. I was presuming that an off-the-shelf surge suppressor would also have some filtering in it to help with THD ("harmonic distortion" which means a non-sinusoidal power supply).

But really, jenn96, the worries about a "dirty" power signal are overblown IMO. Your surge suppressor will probably protect against major malfunctions of the generator, lightning strikes, etc. If you have analog speakers, you will hear a pronounced 60-Hz hum when powering them from the generator. For everything else, does it work? If so, it's fine. If not, just unplug it until you're back on mains power.

Didn't know this. Is that true of all UPSes? It doesn't seem to be an inherent requirement of the design. Aren't there units with inverters that keep the input and output isolated?

Oh I agree with you THD is not as big of an issue these days.

It's not that they don't know how, it's they know people don't want the rate raise that would be needed to do it.
