Power restored at 2:27 pm. Outage lasted 32 hours. (Zip 77406 - outside Richmond city limits).

We are in Long Meadow Farms and still don't have power but it seems like everyone around us does. Frustrating to say the least

Still no power in 77024. Some neighbors said there was a CP truck working behind them.

Sucks that the houses across the street are tied into the Hospital and Mall so they never lost power.

Fck you centerpoint...you've had countless opportunites and decades to assess, plan, mitigate...whatever the fck you want to call it...and you still can't manage even a CAT 1. Fn' pathetic. How about reinvest a little and upgrade/improve your sh.t. GD

The CEO of centerpoint should be fired.

Texas or Houston needs to assert itself on them and say to fix the problem now or we will replace them.

CenterPoint essentially exists because of Houston. That leverage needs to be used.

Someone pointed out on reddit (whether true or not) that Florida never has this kind of damage and people rarely go a day or 2 without power from storms. Not certain if that's true, but we should never accept that this is how we have to live our lives.

Pirates doesn't have power right now and a bunch of poles on the lines running out there are down. I would be surprised if it is up this weekend. Damage isn't bad though. Good luck!

But not an inverter. Not sure how much the cleaner power supply really matters. But worth considering.

Can anyone speak to whether it's necessary to buy an inverter generator rather than a conventional? Am I going to fry my TV and appliances if I run them on dirty power for 300 hours. TIA
It's not totally necessary, but if you're concerned about your electronics, you could always get a big screamer that runs most of the necessities via an interlock and then get you a small inverter (Honda, Ryobi, Predator, Westinhouse, etc) and run your TV and other electronics the old fashioned way via extension cords.

I spent some time walking around my neighborhood today. I'm absolutely amazed by the number of large trees downed in the neighborhood. Two houses had trees fall on the roof - fairly significant damage. SEVERAL other houses had trees fall in the yard, sometimes near but not on the house.

We must have been really lucky. No downed trees - just a lot of leaves and branches. And the pool was full of debris.

Did you see a lot of downed trees in your neighborhood or is mine atypical?

I'm going in to Houston tomorrow to buy some r22 and try to recharge an AC at my rental. I can bring a generator if anyone wants to borrow one.

On that note, anyone have experience recharging AC systems?

It's not hard if you have power and a set of gauges. Suction line pressure (the big one) should be approximately equal to the current indoor temp.

I don't have gauges and can't find anywhere that sells them off the shelf so looking at marketplace.

I'm in Kingwood and drove over to the inlaws today and was amazed about how many trees were down. Our neighborhood has some trees down, but not like places like Sand Creek. I was amazed by the sheer number of fallen trees that fell or broke in half. Saw some with trees on their house and I feel for them.

I've lived in this area for Rita and Harvey and have never seen it this bad. This is the worst Cat 1 I can remember for this area.

One suggestion I made to a buddy was looking for an AirBnB out of town.

I'd look a bit further down the coast like Rockport/Port A. I bet quite a few cancelled their plans last week and there are probably places available for a reasonable price since they won't get rebooked.

For example...

Rockport AirBnB

In the Klein area near TC Jester, trees were down everywhere. Saw 10 or so houses within a few blocks of ours with trees through roofs, let alone all the others with trees all over their yard that uprooted.

News said this was a hurricane all the way until it was over Tomball. I don't remember the wind speed details of Ike at this point but family here in south Houston say this was worse.

I was in Katy for Ike and I know what I saw last night for Beryl in Pearland was worse for sure than Ike was for Katy.

The section in Greatwood tied to the fire station got power back a little while ago.
The rest of the neighborhood is still in the dark, but it's progress.

On my wishlist. My current generator is 6250/8500, but this would be amazing.

This and a soft start for the AC would be great.

I have the dual fuel of this generator that I converted to tri-fuel. currently 33 hrs straight on nat gas. Powering muy house + neighbors have extension cords. for their fridge/wifi

Can I install this with an interlock and transfer switch to code in Houston ?

I'm in sand creek. The neighborhood got hit pretty hard. Thankfully our house was spared damage but driving along just Maple Terrace you'll see some major damage.

I'm coming up on 36 hours on my generator in a house cooling to 68 (reducing the stop/starts on the AC).

I'm running on nat gas, but have 100lbs of propane and 17 gallons of gas as a backup.

I'm as prepared as I can be...

If only CenterPoint did anything proactive, we might not have to do all of this.

There's no ice anywhere.

I'll be buying a generator after this one.

I got cash, full tank of gas, tuna/beef sticks/jerky and water beforehand. I did all my laundry and did a clean as well.

I thought I could get ice easily but I've learned that lesson. There's simply not enough resources to go around so people that can get generators etc. should.

Not sure what you mean? You wouldn't have both?

I have an interlock and it powers the whole panel.

Pages ago I posted my setup, but can do it again if needed. But with this generator + soft/hard start on your AC you should be able to run nat gas and power your whole house.

I know many people who are powering 2 AC's as well with hard/soft starts.

Hopefully you knew my post was tongue in cheek as a laugh to all of those saying that people shouldn't be complaining.

I mean even for Derecho, we at least had an estimated date of expected power restoration, which was different than the freeze where we could see where the outages were and what areas were getting fixed and when. Something like that would be more helpful than seeing this on their "outage tracker"

That's not a bad idea. I've always bumped mine up to run less, but I'm going to cool the damn thing down and just let them run. I have a 5 ton and 2.5 ton and my 20kw runs both but does surge when they come on. Once they're on, it runs normally. Outside of a fridge and freezer, a couple fans, and the kid's TV, that's pretty much all it's running. Having full LEDs throughout helps as well.
