There's no ice anywhere.

I'll be buying a generator after this one.

I got cash, full tank of gas, tuna/beef sticks/jerky and water beforehand. I did all my laundry and did a clean as well.

I thought I could get ice easily but I've learned that lesson. There's simply not enough resources to go around so people that can get generators etc. should.

How many of them actually service and maintain them how they're supposed to, though? Especially seeing how some just ran for 100-200+ hours a month and a half ago? A generator isn't a set it, forget it, and always be covered type investment.

Also, it should be a reality and taken into consideration when fiscally looking at generators and when planning for emergency situations. The number of these things has grown exponentially. Don't expect parts or techs to be readily available

The above is a big reason why I just go with the interlock kit and portable generators. The unknowns really tip the scale to make the $20k in investment worth it to me.

For sure this. I'm in to my backup power about $1700 and should be able to power our garage apartment plus select circuits in our house or fewer circuits in the house and one home HVAC system. Really hard to justify an extra $10-$15 grand for the auto start generac.
I think this is where I'm going to end up. Right now, I just have a small 3000W generator to run portable AC, fans, chargers, and a couple of lights - enough to not make it miserable. But I'm not sure I want to drop $15K to make it so that we go from not miserable to comfortable for a couple of days every few years. Spending less than that for a generator that will power something like central AC, fridge, internet, etc. seems like the way to go.

For your backup power, how long does a tank of gas last? And how much gas do you keep on hand? That is the one benefit I see to a Generac with NG - I don't have to wake up in the middle of the night to refuel.
They sell dual fuel and tri fuel generators, which I would go with if it were me. They cost a bit more, but having options to fuel it would be worth the extra to me. I was talking to a neighbor this morning and he's running select things in his house on a tri fuel Duromax that's hooked to his NG line. Not sitting as pretty as many with a whole home, but still pretty comfortable.

If you go dual fuel, you can get some sizable propane tanks to keep on hand (and probably a lot easier to find to get refilled than gas) and the propane doesn't go bad.
So you could get a 13000W tri-fuel like posted above for $2K. Get an interlock switch installed, and hook it up to your NG line and you're looking at sub-$5K for what is essentially a whole home generator?

Not entirely. I have this same setup. Depending on what you are powering you are limited. I have a large house with a 4 ton ac downstairs and 2.5 ton upstairs. I have a soft start on my downstairs which allows me to run it. I can't run both at the same time. Perhaps if I put another soft start on the second unit. You will need to be mindful of using the microwave, oven, dishwasher and anything else that has a heating element as these consume large amounts of wattage.

Running a dryer is a whole nother beast and not something my generator can currently handle.

That being said, for the cost and convenience factors this was an easy decision for me.

Have no idea how but independence heights has power.

Does centerpoint cover all the way to Galveston as well? We have a rental in Pirates Beach this weekend and very curious if there is any chance our "vacation" will even happen. Still waiting to hear back from rental owners.

That is terrible. I had neighbors across the street who did not have power run extension cords from my house to power theirs.. that is a total crap move. The least one can do in a situation like this is show a bit of humanity and not be a tool.

I installed a 38KW Generac whole home generator in 2018 after Harvey. (Was without power for 10 days after Harvey). While it was an expensive investment, it has been a good one since I installed it.

If you buy and install one, pay particular attention to the company you buy it from and look at their after installation service and maintenance plan and personnel. I had an abysmal experience maintenance wise with the company I bought my generator from. I ended up switching late last year and have been pleased with the new contractor.

Given that Texas has had some cold winters recently, make sure that you have a block warmer and battery heater installed. Otherwise your generator may not start during a freeze. I learned this the hard way unfortunately.

This and a soft start for the AC would be great.

I have the dual fuel of this generator that I converted to tri-fuel. currently 33 hrs straight on nat gas. Powering muy house + neighbors have extension cords. for their fridge/wifi

CenterPoint just messing with me now.

Get a text saying power has been restored. Neighbors all got the same text.

I wisely didn't turn my generator off, but instead, flipped the generator breaker off and main on. No power.

Not surprising since I haven't seen CenterPoint around here, but why get people's hopes up.

At least Xfinity isn't bothering to tell us anything.

It came on at 11:06 AM. Got all excited, then heard the transformer going. Off at 11:10. A neighbor came and asked me about because she got the text saying it was restored and was confused.

If I remember correctly which hood you said you live in, that might have been it.

I'm in WB3. We got the text around 12 saying repairs were done.

I actually drove around after the text to see if I could find anybody from centerpoint even in the area. I saw one small truck, but he was in the wrong spot to have been working on our lines.

But not an inverter. Not sure how much the cleaner power supply really matters. But worth considering.

Can anyone speak to whether it's necessary to buy an inverter generator rather than a conventional? Am I going to fry my TV and appliances if I run them on dirty power for 300 hours. TIA

Fck you centerpoint...you've had countless opportunites and decades to assess, plan, mitigate...whatever the fck you want to call it...and you still can't manage even a CAT 1. Fn' pathetic. How about reinvest a little and upgrade/improve your sh.t. GD

If you have elderly parents to deal with, you should have already had a plan in place for what you were going to do during a hurricane. with consideration for the potential for extended power outages, which should be a surprise to nobody on the gulf coast.

if you didn't do that ahead of time, that's not centerpoint's problem. obviously them having their ****e together would have made it easier, but that's not the real issue here

My wife, who is on the neighborhood Facebook page, said there were starting to be messages asking about Generac error codes and the generator not staying on. Some said that callers asking about service were told it could be a while before a technician comes out. Not everyone who has an emergency now started without a plan.
I'm seeing those as well. $15,000 essentially down the tubes in those cases. At that investment level, failure is simply not an option.

What are the causes of that? That is wild. I would be furious.

I spoke with a homeowner in Bellaire this morning and word around there is there are so many natural gas generators running at the same time that supply in the lines can't keep up with demand. Seems like it would be a simple fix if so.

That's a great price for a pretty good generator.

For those with a Costco membership...

Oh and a note for those who are going to buy a generator or have one that has an electric start...be sure to put the battery on a battery tender! Nothing like doing everything right to store it but forgetting that and having to pull it like an 80's 3-wheel death machine.

Yea it's a great price considering it is I think $1400 at Lowe's and HD.

The line to get into C was all the way down the entrance ramp at about 8:30am. I had to go back up and search thru about 1500 pieces of luggage at baggage claim to find my bag when I saw it.

It's not hard if you have power and a set of gauges. Suction line pressure (the big one) should be approximately equal to the current indoor temp.
