Everything is a cluster at airport. Late boarding. No food for purchase on flight. Chaos. And flight attendant announced we're going to Panama vs Portland. Now I hear that VH song in my head!

I have a flight to EWR this evening that is "on time" but I'm sure I'll get to the airport and then delays will be announced

I loathe EWR....

We got power back late last night. If anyone needs to borrow a generator in Montgomery/Conroe/The Woodlands let me know. It's only 3500w but will run fridges/freezers/fans/lights.

It's stressful for everyone, it's not like the storm hit only yall in particular. Crying about it and getting mad from rage bait articles doesn't help.

It's unreasonable to expect everything to be back to normal less than 24 hrs later. Go clean up debris, you'll feel better and it'll be productive.

It's been more than 24 hours. At what point does it become acceptable to be peeved about the situation?
At this point yesterday, the storm was still raging through Houston, so no line crews were out doing repairs until it passed, so I'd say tomorrow around 2pm would be the minimum expectation.

I imagine every lineman's truck has gps on it (or at least the foreman's company phone has a tracker). Couldn't Centerpoint have a tracker map showing locations of this in real time? At least we could see where they are located and how many are out there working. Would help with communications.

Surely you understand that Uke money and Texas preparedness money do not come from the same bucket.....right?

If you don't, you should probably just go sit in the corner.

Yea I understand that and was just using it as an example to state that we should fix our own problems before any of our $ goes to other countries. Either way it makes me not want to ever pay taxes again

I guess the easiest thing to do would be to ban any tree near a power line. Of course, you would need to determine what is "near" (maybe 50 feet). But for a lot of us that would mean no trees in our backyards. CP contractors have been in our neighborhood at least two or three times in the past 15 years trimming trees.
There are a number of trees that can be planted that do not grow super tall which could suffice for many suburban lots. The problem is they plant effing oak trees with shallow root systems. Coupled with the pines and it's a cluster.

2.5 million without power in the area after a Cat 1.

This is concerning going forward. Especially after Derecho.

I know there are a lot of so called "libertarians" on this thread but this is unacceptable.

The State of Texas continues to fail on a reliable power grid and affordable energy

This has nothing to do with the State of Texas power grid failing. There's enough generation available at the moment, but when lines fall over and/or trees fall into lines due to Cat 1+ hurricane winds this happens. There's already regulations in place regarding proper protocols for keeping power line right of ways maintained.

Just ended up being a direct hit on the countries 4th largest city. This is what happens.

Bull**** talking point. In the last 3 years our ability to deliver power in emergencies has been a joke.

In my 50 years of living here I have never seen such an incompetent energy infrastructure management.

It is is a joke

This was a Cat 1 btw.

I agree. I shudder to imagine a direct cat 3+ hit. Or even a cat 2.

Trying to figure out your "libertarian" comment though. What is "libertarian" about the current structure of energy companies down here? How is libertarianism to blame for this? I don't consider myself a libertarian, just genuinely curious.

People who expected power to be back immediately after the storm haven't gone through multiple hurricanes in the Houston area. We were without power in Ike for 17 days. Even in the magical utopia of the 80's we were without power for 5 days after Alicia and the house saw eye in that one. If Centerpoint gets everyone back up in a week, they've done a solid job.

This. I get just as frustrated as everyone else, but maybe WE are the idiots for living in a borderline unlivable mosquito and Nissan Altima infested hot and humid swamp that attracts hurricanes every year?

I increasingly ask myself why the f*** I still live in this God awful place. Then I remind myself…

Call a few places in Liberty or Dayton to see if they're open. If they all have power, I'd guess they're pretty good on gas.

Decent idea in theory. I have to imagine their contractors don't want their locations broadcast publicly because there will undoubtedly be crazies who go out and harass them.

When I lived in Seabrook as a kid, linemen would come to our property annually before hurricane season to trim trees along the easement. I can't remember the last time I saw preventative measures being taken.

I had an earlier post that I think was deleted.

We had ongoing issues with Centerpoint for most of last year. They couldn't keep the lights on when it was sunny. I escalated the problem to The Woodlands Township, and Centerpoint basically admitted they aren't doing anything in term of preventative maintenance, either on trees or equipment. Not enough money, people, etc, etc.

They finally did do some specific maintenance/repairs in my immediate area, and this is the first time we've lost power since last fall. So, it seems as though their efforts work, if/when you can get them to come out.

I fully expected power to go out from this storm. But those of us who live in areas with chronic power issues year-round definitely have power outage fatigue.

I've got about 35 gallons ethanol free gas in my boat if you have a transfer pump and want to pump it out. I ordered one but it isn't here yet.

This. It'll be the same people who are currently on Nextdoor or FB crying about their vehicles being on empty and unable to find gas. They expect to live normally 100% of the time, and any interruption due to their negligence in preparing is not their issue.

We got lucky this time around and never lost power but that's not been the case in the past.

It really is an awful experience and I feel for anyone who's down especially with the heat we're getting the next couple days..

However, I will say I think the hand wringing over the outage tracker and 'communication' from CP is a bit much. Critiquing the preparedness is acceptable but I've never got the big stink about the tracker map.

I can imagine the logistics of managing thousands of linemen from all over to assist in restoring millions of customers is extremely challenging.

I also imagine in mass outage events like this the tracker map is incredibly hard to keep updated and becomes absolutely pointless. IDGAF about a map. Just get power back on ASAP.

Certainly a more reasonable post that the other dipsh-t, but again tracker map aside, the communication is pretty terrible. An outage map at least gives some sort of estimate or expectation versus just being completely in the dark. Especially if you have elderly family members you need to plan for. The heat index is about to get north of 100 and that is life threatening for an elderly person without electricity. Not really sure what is so hard to understand about that.

As noted by a poster above, Florida is far more prepared than we are and has no issue restoring power to 1m+ within a day.
if you have elderly parents to deal with, you should have already had a plan in place for what you were going to do during a hurricane. with consideration for the potential for extended power outages, which should be a surprise to nobody on the gulf coast.

if you didn't do that ahead of time, that's not centerpoint's problem. obviously them having their ****e together would have made it easier, but that's not the real issue here

So, neighbor let me borrow his generator so I can plug in the fridge at least. As soon as I set it up outside and before I enter the house he tells me the power just came back on. Geez.

I am guessing they took the outage map down because it made it really easy for criminals to target specific addresses that were without power and told them how long an address would be without power. The map updates automatically from smart meters so keeping it current it isn't a challenge.

You can still access info on your account by logging in even though their text and email system seems backed up (probably because they encouraged everyone to sign up for that service and it got overwhelmed by too many users.)

They should just make the map data less granular but still provide regional info to everyone.

That thing was up for years..

They took it down because they "upgraded" to a crappy map that bombed out during the derecho. Like everything they do, it's terrible.

For a generator? If that's what you're wanting it for, just get what you can get right now and drain the tank and carb when you're finished with it.

If you need ethanol free, check Home Depot, Lowe's, or Ace. They have cans of it by the lawn equipment. Will be more expensive, but some is better than one.

Bucees in Pearland was out. I ended up with regular 87. I'm just going to make sure to run the generator dry and clean the carburetor before putting it up. If I end up not using it I'll have lawnmower gas for the summer.
