This is concerning going forward. Especially after Derecho.

I know there are a lot of so called "libertarians" on this thread but this is unacceptable.

The State of Texas continues to fail on a reliable power grid and affordable energy

This has nothing to do with the State of Texas power grid failing. There's enough generation available at the moment, but when lines fall over and/or trees fall into lines due to Cat 1+ hurricane winds this happens. There's already regulations in place regarding proper protocols for keeping power line right of ways maintained.

Just ended up being a direct hit on the countries 4th largest city. This is what happens.

Bull**** talking point. In the last 3 years our ability to deliver power in emergencies has been a joke.

In my 50 years of living here I have never seen such an incompetent energy infrastructure management.

It is is a joke

This was a Cat 1 btw.

I agree. I shudder to imagine a direct cat 3+ hit. Or even a cat 2.

Trying to figure out your "libertarian" comment though. What is "libertarian" about the current structure of energy companies down here? How is libertarianism to blame for this? I don't consider myself a libertarian, just genuinely curious.

People who expected power to be back immediately after the storm haven't gone through multiple hurricanes in the Houston area. We were without power in Ike for 17 days. Even in the magical utopia of the 80's we were without power for 5 days after Alicia and the house saw eye in that one. If Centerpoint gets everyone back up in a week, they've done a solid job.

Have the WX experts acknowledged a superior computer model?

Have they declared a clear winner this go round?

Who is in the running for the triple crown?

The next storm is the Preakness. Who do we need to keep an eye on? Which models are legit? Can they repeat their performance?

Still nada in Katy near Fulshear. No service except if I drive about 10 minutes from house. Generator running and comfortable for now. Need more gas (down to final 12 gallons or so) and probably need to make a run before it's gets light.

Yall stay safe!

Not sure why centerpoint keeps referencing bringing one million customers back online by Wednesday. That tells me nothing.

CenterPoint admits thousands of out-of-town repair crews weren't staged in the Houston area ahead of Hurricane Beryl CenterPoint said Tuesday that it had mobilized thousands of crews to assess and repair damage caused by the Category 1 storm. But most of them aren't in Houston yet.

They brought 30,000 back on line since midnight so roughly 7,500/hr.

At this rate it will only take 240hrs. I bet it will 6+ days to make any progress.

Because it's a round number and it sounds big and they expect you to be impressed.

You may be thinking "wow, Centerpoint must not think very much of me if they think I'll be impressed by that." And that's absolutely correct. They think very little about you, me, or any of their customers. But they have no competition, so they don't really care either way.

Good post. The problems and failures have nothing to do with the "power grid". That's a leftist talking point.

If you don't have power, you need to plan on not having power back on for at least a week. Anything better than that is a bonus, and it could be longer. My house in Oak Forest was without power for about 5 days after the tornado, but there were folks in my neighborhood who didn't get power back for two plus weeks. We didn't have internet for almost three weeks. Godspeed.

If it lucky. New generator is sitting useless in my garage because we just unboxed it and hadn't gotten it set up.

But neighbor across the street who has a whole house is at the airport flying out for 2 weeks this am. So, in exchange for keeping an eye on the place, I took over her fridge and am free to use her electricity as I need.

If we could just get reliable 5G, I'd fire up the computer and WFH. The inability to communicate with people and get information has been more frustrating than the power outage.

We have a tree on a power line in my hood. I'm curious to see if The Woodlands Township is able to lean on Centerpoint to get it prioritized for repair. We've had a lot of issues with CP keeping the lights on even in sunny weather. So much so that the Board of Directors got involved, and CP did come out last fall and do some extra maintenance and repairs. That seemed to help, as this is the first outage we've had since those repairs.

Ha! I feel so bad that it's just sitting there, and I think my BF does too. This was his "project", and we thought we had a little more time.

The plan is to hook it up directly to my natural gas line and install a transfer switch (which is why it's not running). I think he breathed a sigh of relief when I told him I was going to my neighbors, because that meant he didn't have to go buy gas and get it running right now.

Side discussion, if anyone here knows…can you run a transfer switch directly off of the exterior electrical box? My gas meter and exterior electrical are right next to each other. But the breaker box is in the garage on the opposite side of the house.

Neighbor who did this set up was told by an electrician that wires had to be run from the garage box, through the attic, and down the exterior of the house to where the exterior boxes are. I saw his set up yesterday. I don't have any issue with it, except he said the electrical drop cost $3k.

Still cheaper than a whole house, but definitely more than I was expecting.

Get an interlock not a transfer switch. It needs to be near the breaker box though. They can use conduit to get you closer or around things. Without seeing your set up figure or what you would put the generator and then do the measurements to the gas meter and breaker box. You can get 100 ft hose from the meter

My dad worked for AEP for 46 years. He was the storm coordinator and spent many a hurricane away from us in South Texas to go work in other parts of the state and country. Most of the electric entities won't bring crews in until after the storm passes because they want to make sure that these guys can actually get in. Crews likely started staging yesterday in Austin or San Antonio once it became more clear where the storm was going to make landfall. I expect you all will see lots of crews from outside of Houston making their way into town today and tomorrow. Remember that as of 72 hours ago, this storm was going to hit the central Texas coast.

Good luck guys.

Willowbend/S Post Oak area here. Lost power at 6:20 yesterday morning. Power still off. We didn't lose power in Derecho. Winter storm Feb 21 no power for several days. I lived in Oak Forest for Ike, and had no power for 2 weeks.

My expectation this go round is 1 - 2 weeks. Anything better will be added bonus. Based on prior performance, I think immediate power restoration (less than 48 hrs) expectations are unreasonable.

Would I like to believe CP has the capacity to wave a magic wand, instantly repair all infrastructure, and restore power to millions of people in a matter of hours? Sure. I've yet to see anything in my 22 years here that leads me to believe that will ever happen though.

No power in Maplewood (between Meyerland and Westbury) since 6am yesterday. We've lived here since 2017 and never lost power before now so this is new for us and was naively unexpected. We didn't lose power during Harvey, any of the freezes, or the derecho.

I gotta say, I'm pretty proud of the people on my street. Everyone was out cleaning up once the rains stopped and the street was completely clear within a few hours, including removal of several large trees. There are a lot of elderly residents also and neighbors worked together to clear their properties for them.

I went for a drive last night and saw that most places on Bissonnet between Hillcroft and Rice had power and some places were open. Foodwise, I saw Fuzzy's pizza, Firehouse Pizza, a few food trucks, HEB (Bellaire and Meyerland), and Burger King were open. Most of those places had very few patrons, while Burger King had a line at least 40 cars deep that wrapped around the block. I have to assume those people didn't mind waiting in their car because it allowed them to charge phones and spend time in their car's AC.

Can you elaborate a little? Interlock sounds familiar (I may have gotten my terms mixed up), but the neighbor now has a giant plug on the outside of his house that the generator is plugged into. I did not go into his garage to see what's at his breaker box, but if I see him today, I can prob ask him.

If it has to be next to the breaker box, though, a drop or hose is my only option. And it will have to run along the ceiling or in the attic so that I don't run over it every time I back out of the garage. Attic drop would surely be the shortest distance.

Neighbor also said he had to "upgrade" his breaker box as part of the install because they told him it was too old or bad or something like that. I started thinking at that point he might have been fleeced by the company he hired. He also had probs with gas pressure and had to have extra work done to connect to his gas line because his generator is 1/2" (mine is 3/4).
