Power restoration likely won't be quick.
At least with hurricanes, linemen from out of state have a chance to mobilize in advance of the storm and are ready to move in quickly.

Also with the derecho that storm went clear across the south for 100's of miles so crews across the south were dealing with the same thing.

My wife said the street is flooding and I thought it hasn't been raining that hard. Then I see the water is coming out of the storm drains. That'll do it.

I'm convinced the storm drain in front of my neighbor's house is only spec'd to handle his pool drainage. Anyone had luck getting the city to come inspect/clean one out (not during a hurricane obviously)?

As I sit here watching this, I feel pretty nervous, knowing this is just the start of hurricane season..I guess just take it one storm at a time..

Those of this who have lived in hurricane areas for a while (or our entire lives) have learned to distinguish between storms. There are those (like this one) that knock out power and cause some damage, but in the grand scheme of things, are just one or two days of inconvenience to most people.

Next up would be the Harvey-like storms. The flooding that caused was miserable for a lot of people. Flooding is about the worst thing that can happen to your home. If you happen to live where flooding is a low risk, though, you don't have to worry about this one. This is hit or miss, depending on where you are in Houston.

Then there are the Katrina-type storms with a 30+ foot storm surge. These are down-right scary and truly deadly if you don't evacuate. But storm surge mainly affects people right along the coast up to a few miles inland. Those of us in the Houston burbs aren't really in danger from a storm surge. Now, the widespread effects of such a storm will be felt all over the greater Houston area, in terms of power outages, fuel and food shortages, etc. But not living within a few miles of the coastline is the best way to reduce this risk.

Wind damage to things like your roof and fence, while a PITA, are fixable.

Power outages suck, but other than buying a generator, there isn't much that can be done about them except suffer through.

Inevitably one day a "big one" will hit. Best advice is to live somewhere that mitigates your risk (to the extent that you can) and evacuate when that risk is no longer tolerable. Most important, help your friends and neighbors out when they do have damage.

Does that happen often in your large rain events? Because that doesn't sound good.

A couple hours and we will be through it. Hang in there folks and be safe.

Only in a widespread event like this. In the Heights, so we are talking old drainage systems. But once white oak and buffalo bayou get up, there's no where for the water to go.

Thanks. Had to go switch all the measurements off of Euro units.

Ventusky did the same thing to me overnight. Yesterday it was in mph, this morning it had switched to km/h. Must've done an app update overnight?

Well said..been here for 35 years and been through all of what Houston has gotten. Though it may be brutal for a day or 2, we make it through. And truly, it really is about helping your neighbors out and coming together to help each other through

Houston's stormwater system is generally designed to handle up to about 2" per hour.

Seen it Downtown during/after a heavy PM rain. The storm sewers drain directly into Galveston Bay, which I assume has something to do with the pressure build up.

Can't go outside to look at it yet, but I can clearly see lots of of pieces of my roof all over the lawn and my fence is doing its best Michael Jackson lean move. It's ugly out there.

And if the bayou levels get high enough above the abutting drainage system, it can push water back the other direction.

Herzog...needs to tell us that eyewall located SW of HOU that he is predicting lead the EYE of the storm to move along the NW side of HOU....he needs to tell us that line of WIND TO SLOW DOWN....

That will be the saving grace ....for it to lessen in the wind gusts as it moves along the N/NW side of HOU

In oak forest…power has been out since around 6. Had slight break in bands so used the chance to hook up the generator.

Our toilets are gurgling, though, and slow to drain. Anyone else?

In King Lakes, west side of Cinco, and we're taking a beating. Light tree damage out front and a tree down beyond the back fence around the lake. Still have power, but it has flickered off and on quite a few times. Waiting for the eye to go walk the fence and look at the roof.

Lost power around 6am in Memorial City. Generator is running strong though.

Saw some green lightening a few times before sunrise. Anyone else see that?

I got one small limb down but my street drainage ditch is full. Good thing is I live more at the top of the slope so should be fine.

Hopefull..... I know it can still produce some down trees and limbs and roof damage.

Hezog providing the information about that wind gusts moving around the EYE of the storm and telling us a time frame is helpful. It is helpful to get the information because right now on my RING cams is looks pretty manageable at my place in The Woodlands.

Still have power in OF (section 3) which is surprising. Not sure how long it will last. Similar issue with the toilets. Just need to make it through this eye wall

In Clear lake. Lost my side fence. Probably should have torn it down anyway it was damaged. Still have power but wind is still going. I never lost power in Harvey l, but wind is much worse. Internet is off and on.
