As an aside, you could have a 1 foot swell and the sea look like glass but if the period is in the sweet spot you'll be rolling like crazy on a big ship. Longer than 8 seconds swell period and you can get in to trouble. The good thing about Galveston area and a lot of central GOM is the waves stack up so you don't have long periods and can work in pretty rough seas. Start edging down towards corpus and it's like working on a different body of water completely because the currents, wind and swell are completely different than gola and Sabine areas. Of course SW pass area has a ton of wild currents as well.
