Serous question- why do people stock up on water before a hurricane?

I can understand if you live in a rural area and dependent on an electric water well pump or if you need distilled water for medical reasons, but the average family with city water… what is the purpose?

Top right corner of screen where is says temperature. If you click it will give you a bunch of options. Just scroll down and click wind gust.

You forget the multiple days during the Icepocolypse with water?

That's why.

There's no guarantee water service will continue, whether due to a power outage or loss of pressure making undrinkable.

If you're that naive, you should probably move away from the coast.

If the water district loses power, they can't keep the pressure up. Without sufficient pressure, it allows intrusion and contamination of the water supply. That is why you get boil notices. If you have no gas or electricity, you can't boil. A case of water is like $5 and you can still use it after the storm.

In case of boil water notice or power failure at water pumps. Storm/flood damage at water treatment plant.

Interesting fear mongering going on with the TV mets.

So far this morning, I've noticed they keep the storm at Cat 1 strength when it's right on top of Houston. I found that very odd just based on my experience over the years.

All the maps you guys are posting have it at TS strength. I think I'll go with TS.

Municipal water pumps are also electric. If there are widespread power outages, the water supply can also lose pressure and trigger a boil water notice.

ETA - what the fellas above said.

While I'm no expert, it certainly looks like this thing would be a TS by the time it reaches my place here in Katy.

But the bozos on TV like to sensationalize weather events like this to the nth degree, like it's the end of life on planet Earth or something.

I have interpreted the higher inland wind speeds because the storm may intensify approaching landfall and …a key… which is more positively in rainfall totals, moving faster clearing out of the greater Houston area.

Depends what is between you and the coast. Lot of things to knock wind down at ground level when it hits the shore.

Not being naive and I get freezes, but has Houston ever lost clean water during the past 30 years over a hurricane / tropical storm? I have been here and can't recall. I get water is cheap, just asking the question.

Tested and ready. With all the Houston area trees, even 40-50 mph sustained winds will be a chit show.

Our office has yet to make a decision.

Wouldn't surprise me a bit if the GM and BM are arguing with HR about work from home. The former two would expect people to come in during a Cat 5 storm.

I lost power for 2 1/2 weeks during Ike, lived off of a generator for a while, wife and little kids stayed with relatives, but I really don't remember city water being an issue.
