My wife pointed out they both were pumping up Beryl as some outrageous unprecedented thing and something that will only get worse due to climate change, but then a week later are telling people not to worry.

I agree with them they are level headed on their forecasts, but they sensationalize the other stuff and then wonder why people are freaking out about this storm.

So they "sensationalized" when talking about Category 5 storm in the Caribbean in early July but are talking people off the ledge on Cat 1 forecast at the edge of the region. How weird of them.

Beryl is the earliest Cat 5 on record in the Atlantic. July 2nd versus August 5th. Pretty extreme if you ask me.

" The official Atlantic hurricane record dates back to 1851, the first Atlantic hurricane season to be included in the record. However, the quality of the data is uneven, and satellite-based monitoring only goes back to the 1960s. Data used to calculate hurricane power before the satellite era, around 1970, is also less reliable."

This storm is no big deal….seriously.

If this provides any comfort to those that never experienced a hurricane…just remember….you will be okay. Prepare but you will be okay.

Before Hurricane Ike I was at a Vietnamese/Chinese grocery store with my Dad on Bellaire Blvd. We went there because every other place closed before the storm. It was business as usual at this place.

My Dad said "These people suffered a communist storm in the mid 70s….you think they care about a little wind and rain?"

I dont even care what the "record" is, if you have hurricane nerds and their hurricane site and theres currently a category 5 storm somewhere, theyre like gonna be talking about it.

Thats one negative of naming the storms, IMO. It gives people a persistent idea and even allows people to ascribe a personality to it, but impacts in the Carribean and impacts on the Texas coast are more accurately two totally different events.

Climate change is not political. It is fact.

The cause of, and what we do about it (if anything) is political.

Mentioning that the climate is changing should not be enough to trigger folks, but we live in strange times.

It's been a fact throughout the history of the earth. It's when politicians use it against the people to tax them and arrogantly act like humans can have any meaningful impact on the earth's climate that pisses people off. Also, inaccurate predictions over the years like coastal cities flooding due to polar ice caps melting have made people shut down when people get on their climate change soapbox. We look to meteorologists to predict the weather without giving political input. However, the SCW people are incapable of doing that, and deserve any criticism they get for throwing climate change around constantly.

How 'valuable' do you feel they are when you would use during a hurricane and a ice storm?

*** Voluntary evacuation has been called for the West End of Galveston Island at 10 AM Sunday July 7. The evacuation order covers 103rd St. west to the San Luis Pass ***

From Mayor Craig Brown,
Pursuant to the authority granted in Texas Government Code Chapter 418 as well as the Charter and City Code of the City of Galveston, the following is issued:
Due to the potential for coastal flooding associated with Hurricane Beryl roads on the west end of Galveston Island may become impassable. The National Weather Service has advised the possibility exists that tides may be 4 to 6 feet above normal as Hurricane Beryl makes landfall. Forecast models project the storm surge would result in serious localized flooding in areas of the
City of Galveston impacted by tidal influences with significant hazards attendance thereto, the
Mayor of the City of Galveston hereby issues a Notice of Voluntary Evacuation beginning at 10:00 A.M. on this the 7th day of July 2024 for the following areas within the City of Galveston, Texas: Those areas in the City of Galveston located west of 103rd street not protected by theSeawall. This Notice is issued since high tides may prevent ingress and egress to those parts of the City
west of 103rd street not protected by the Seawall. Residents and visitors within the affected area
are urged to consider their circumstances and decide whether evacuation is in their best interests.

I have a medium sized one. The biggest benefit is being able to keep my 2 fully stocked refrigerators going. We have a gas stove, so that lets us eat from the fridge, have ice, and be able to cook real food. In hot weather we can also run fans and a small window unit. Obviously charging electronics (although you can do that in the car). If you are handy enough to keep it filled with gas and maintained, they're well worth it. I'd like to get a big portable I can use to power my home AC units - maybe next storm, that involves more logistics than I've had time for lately.

13000 watt trifuel generator here. Runs 3500 sq ft house and 4 ton ac w portable ac in bedroom. Soft start on AC. Once I put a soft start on upstairs ac I can run both.

Shoot met a pm if you have specific questions. Don't want to derail thread anymore than it already is.

Run it until the gas tank is empty. Old gas kills the carburetor. Learned this after Rita.

Or run it on propane and you don't have to worry about carburetors. The trade off is you get about 10% less wattage.

Honda is the gold standard, but also expensive. I ran a 5000 watt Predator inverter generator from Harbor Freight on a job site every day for a few months with propane and never had a problem with it once. Also, like a lot of people on here I recently bought the 13,000 wat Duromax tri fuel generator from Home Depot to do my whole house but I've only started it a couple of times and couldn't speak to it really.

I would think ethanol free would also be fine to not kill the carb.

There is a place on the northwest side of town that will convert any generator to run on natural gas. Usually is cheaper that way then a tri fuel one.
