Yeah, I went to public schools for 10 years (more than half of that in HISD) and an average private school for 2 years. You can't fool me with imaginary benefits of being around bad students, woke faculty and discipline problems. I got to see both sides and there was no comparison. The public schools, even with advanced level classes, were simply not competitive in terms of offering a good learning environment and a community of other families that were good influences.CDUB98 said:schmendeler said:

Sorry to have offended and I admire your white knighting on behalf of males from Kinkaid. But I'll stand by my statement that Kinkaid dudes are charmin soft from my experience, with maybe one or two exceptions in every class. Damn good hair though.
We have four children there, and have been there 9 years. Overall, good experience.
It has allowed our children to be big fish in a small pond, so to speak. We will probably send kids to public high school (Spring Branch ISD) since high school is much more expensive, but at least they've received a good foundation.
There is a strong religious component. We like this, but non-Catholics may not.

Apparently it was their choice.
We also have some friends with 5 kids. Both widows. She brought 3 to the marriage, he brought 1, then they had one together. All 5 are at different private schools around town. That to me is absolutely wild. We are looking to move all our kids to Second Baptist sooner rather than later just because having to deal with two schools is a PITA enough.

Pretty much every single Jesuit school I've ever heard of is really competitive in sports. And that's all sports. Part of the Jesuit tradition is the body fueling the mind and doing so via sports is the modern way rather than literal "soldiers of Christ" of the past.

I just feel like one of the biggest benefits of having kids close together in age is so that they can watch out for each other at school. Besides the logistical nightmare, one of my big goals as a parent will be to foster a close relationship between my hypothetical kids. I dunno, this is very biased coming from someone who benefited by having an older brother in the same school as me....except when his english teacher didn't like him.
There are so many schools/private schools in Houston that it is hard for me to believe that none of them would meet the needs of both kids.

Sometimes it is difficult to get both kids in, some times people believe in same sex education so that changes things. The schools are super competitive and not all kids meet that mold.

I didn't shy away from admitting that my children are hypothetical and that I am biased from my own anecdotal experiences.
My hypothetical children are smart, beautiful, and athletic btw. Strong willed AND well behaved. Adventurous, but stay out of trouble. AND they aren't picky eaters AT ALL. Screens? who needs them. They are reading classic literature. /tongue in cheek

She definitely was. I remember the late nights sitting in the dorm.
I hesitate to give a real response, but Texags has definitely been more of a net positive in my life than negative. I pray that's the worst thing my hypothetical daughter ever wants to do. I was still very innocent and nave going into college. Many of my best friends are idiots from this place.
Daughter went to JPII from 1st through 5th. It was ok, but she heard later from her old classmates that stayed through 8th that they didn't feel as prepared for high school as they thought they would be. The admin would always brag to parents about being the cheapest tuition catholic school in the area, so much so that it was odd.

You'll get a classical education + chapel everyday.

Can someone put it in real world terms what the heck a "Classical Education" is? I googled the definition and it doesn't seem like anything different or unique. I feel like I never heard the term until a year ago and now I see numerous parents who have their kids in those charter and private schools stating they like the school because it offers "Classical Education"
At a basic level, it's supposed to be more well-rounded than more modern systems.

Traditional liberal arts that goes back to ancient Greece. Not only the "Three R's" but logic, rhetoric, traditional philosophies from Greece & Rome. The underlying principles are generally free inquiry and critical thinking. Most folks I know who have sent their kids places like this have them taking Latin at some point. They read the classics and stuff like "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius and so forth. More traditional math instruction than Common Core principles.
Stuff like that.
I'm pretty sure they castrate the young singers who show special promise. Very traditional.

Beat me to it by a couple minutes.
I would say that they don't neglect the math and sciences at all but they focus overall on critical thinking and analysis rather than rote learning.
